View 2 RepliesApparently I don't understand what PointToScreen() is actually returning. I'm thinking it should be absolute screen co-ordinates. In a form, I have some labels in a panel, which itself is in a panel and am trying to derive the screen co-ordinates for the labels in one statement without adding the X and Y co-ordinates of the panels. Why does PointToScreen(Label.Location) return the same value as PointToClient(Label.Location) and the same as Label.Location? Shouldn't PointToScreen() return absolute SCREEN co-odinates?
View 12 RepliesI have a button btnRegEx that when pressed shows a ContextMenuStrip, similar to the '>' button in the Find/Replace dialog in Visual Studio when you are using Regular Expressions. I have a ContextMenuStrip cms which I show using its Show(x,y) method.
At first I was simply setting x and y (the location of the ContextMenuStrip) to some point next to the button, but I noticed that when the button is close to the edge of the screen it goes off screen. I wanted to prevent that so I built some logic into the x-y calculation. When the ContextMenuStrip width is larger than the 'remaining space left' I simply show it more to the left. Same for its Height of course. I am using the Screen.GetWorkingArea(point) method to determine the 'remaining space left'. As I understand it, it returns the working area closest to the point you specify (to which I pass the button's location).
As long as I stay on my first monitor, it is all working perfectly fine. The problem occurs when I move the form to my second monitor. The contextmenustrip is still showing on the first monitor for some reason...

I have noticed that when I click the button when the form is on the second monitor, the buttons location (p) is calculated with the first monitor's top-left corner as (0,0), even though it is on the second monitor. This way, the GetWorkingArea function returns something like 1280, while the buttons x-location is something like 1700... So, how do I get the buttons coordinate relative to the actual screen it is on, rather than the entire dual monitor screens as a whole?
I'm trying to present results on an aspx web page where a store procedure parameter is defined by a dropdown list control on the page. I have followed this guide from Microsoft and have my resultset presented in a DataGrid view. But I cannot seem to adapt it to present the resultset in a chart.
As you can see from my VB code below, I thought it would simply be a case of adapting the GridView databind to a Chart. I have tried various other options, and have successfully generated my data in a chart using a hard-coded parameter in an SQL statement on the ASP page. But when it comes to using the control, I get an empty chart.

I made a windows form which contains a listbox (named VenueList). The listbox is pulling it's values from a list provided by a binding source VenuesBindingSource which is pulling in a ID for the value and a name for the text. There is a button which is causing a DialogBox to appear which is asking for values to store in the database for a NEW venue. Once the values are filled and insert the database, what's supposed to happen is that the dialog box closes and goes back to the original form which invoked it.
However, instead of updating the list. The list stays the same. But if you close the form and reopen it, you see that a new value was added.

In the above code, InsertVenueQuery is the name of a query from the designer which is invoked to add the values onto the tableadapter VenuesTableAdapter which is used to fill the combo box on load. I also sent the Fill command to refill the table with the new value. So the question is, should I go about doing this another way, rather than feeding the Table adapter and sending a fill command on to the datatable? Or is there something that I'm not doing here which I should to force that value into the list. I'm tempted to redo everything outside of the designer but that's a lot of code since I have to essentially run two commands (one to insert the data, and another to get the @@IDENTITY value since this is run on an access database.)
I'm having a problem with part of my application I'm trying to get the directory entry for a computer object in AD (it could be mutiple computer objects based on whether or not the users passes a wild card for the object name). These names would be added add a child node of the parent node "Computers" in the tree view. I'm just having problems with using the search results...

What I am having issues with is showing real-time results. Currently, I have the import operation take place on the import form within the OnLoad event. The problem with this is it only shows the final results instead of the results real-time. Is there anyway to do this without creating a seperate thread and delegates?

Here's my situation: I have a control with motion graphics (for the sake of simplicity, a 'video player' control) in my project. Think of a PictureBox with constantly-changing images. In front of this will sit a second control (such as a second PictureBox of the same dimensions). The topmost PictureBox will be drawn to in its Paint event.
I need to draw very few elements, and the bottom control is updated much more frequently than I need for this drawing. So these elements are drawn to the topmost control. Think of a news broadcast, where they have live video in the background, with a news channel logo, news ticker, and sometimes gradient visible in front.
I'm trying to create that 'foreground' control, and the closest I believe I have gotten so far is the following:

I have created a program that randomly produces simple maths questions and saves them to a SQL Server (SQL Server 2008 R2). The code looks fine and works if I step through the program. Each pass it creates a random question answer and saves them to the database. However, if I run it (Debug/Release), the program produces a question and answer but repeats it in the database.

I am having a SP run in my VB application every 10 seconds to check for any new rows that have been inserted to the database since the last check. What is the best way to do this? Most likely it will be 0 or 1 rows, but I am afraid at random times it maybe more than 1 and so I thought I would fill it in a DataSet, but I came in here to see if there are any other better ways. If dataset is the best way, how do I do a For Each Row in the dataset to process some VB code for each row?
View 20 RepliesOk i have a query i use to parse an xml file to get an id number of a movie that allows me to get more detailed information about that movie from a database.Now the problem is the id is returned correctly with xml files stored on my hard drive (c:\desktop\movies)but when i try and parse an xml file on an external drive it dont get a hit on the <id>1123</id> node.

View 1 RepliesI am running VB from VS2005. I just had to change a program to revises the logon info for a database. When I run build, I get success and there are no errors in the error page. The only thing I can think is that the first two times I ran the build I have the configuration set for 2 copies. It never bothered me before but some update may have come in and changed that. I reset it to 5 and that did not help. I closed VS and re-opened, no help. I created a new folder and moved the contents of the release folder out so that nothing was left. After running the build several more times, the release folder is still blank.

I have a decent understanding of the logic, the content. I'm working on a puzzle and I'd like to write a short program. I'm looking to fill in the following variables: AB.CDE FG.HIJ (they're part of coordinates, and the puzzle is part of a geocache)
The puzzle asks you to determine which numbers correspond to certain colors, like this:

I need to define A-J as >= 0 and <=9. I also need to say that each color is >= 0 and <=9, but that no color can be equal to another color (purple ≠yellow, orange, etc). some number combinations won't work. Purple and yellow can't be 2 and 5 respectively, because that'd produce a negative number. I'm guessing that there will be more than one possible result. So how do I create an equation that calculates this.
What is the difference in the two blocks of code below? I expected them to return the same result, but they don't.
In the case where xml.@Type = "null", I want PatientMetricTypeID (a nullable Integer) to end up being Nothing.

I created a small vb.net console app in visual studio 2008 trying to learn .net but my results show differently when I break in the code and press F11 to step through. If I do it this way, the results I expect to get show but if I don't break into the code the results aren't what I'm expecting.
Basically everytime I click a button i want to write four numbers that are random. If I break into the code, these show random numbers i.e. 1 3 4 3 but if i don't break into the code. my numbers are all the same i.e.1 1 1 1. Here is my code, like I said I'm still learning so the logic is probably not correct.

I'm having some trouble getting the results of the drop-downs in a gridview, and haven't found any helpful articles for VB code.
What I'm trying to do is build a site for tests. So far I have the gridview built w/the extra column for a drop-down list where the true/false answer will be selected. When the test is completed, there is a submit button. All is well except I need to be able to get the results of each drop-down list on post-back to a variable or array (each test contains 10 questions) so the results can be checked/graded. When the results are determined I would like to display a label in it's place and change the text value accordingly (correct or incorrect), so I'll need to be able to enumerate these as well (i.e. label1.text="Correct!", label2.text="Incorrect!", etc...).

The interesting thing is, that when I try to shift any number greater than int32 in .net, it yields bad results.. Every number under int32 (2147483647) yields the same results from php and c#.net or vb.net Is there a workaround for this in .net?
I'm currently trying to send the SB_GETTEXT message to a status bar, but it always crash and I don't why (the SB_GETTEXTLENGTH works fine, but not the SB_GETTEXT). Below is a VBA code I tried to use in Excel to read the status bar text of Worpad. The first code using WM_GETTEXT works well, but the second code that uses SB_GETTEXT always crashes.

This is kind of a two part question. I'm trying to make a very simple automated program that will run two stored procedures (one that updates, one that displays the new results) and then copies the results to the clipboard and pastes it in a new e-mail. I already have the e-mail generating and grabbing whatever is on the clipboard, but I need help with the store procedures.
Every guide I look at on Google seems to show a slightly different way of working with SQL, but I threw this together and need to know if it's working. I don't get any errors and the program "hangs" about as long as it takes for the actualy SP to run, but how do I get the "rows affect" output into a textbox or something?[code]...
