Unable To Cast Object Of Type X To Type X On Setting DataSource To A Table?

Feb 19, 2012

Columns 0 & 1 are filled from a DataAdapter from Access Database and three are added. I had this working, but I changed it to check for the column "Feed" so I could add several Locations. At first this worked, but I did someething in perfecting it and it now fails after filling the first row of the datagridview (dgvFdMed).I ran a check and the table LotsTab has 8 rows filled. Column 1 & 2 are strings and the database appears they are fine. The added columns have just been created with no value. My plan is to enter the values and then use the data from the grid.

Dim i As Integer
Dim column As DataGridViewColumn

Control Arrays - Combobox Select A Datasource At Runtime

Jul 26, 2010

I have a form where I have to use control arrays to create a multiple input form i.e. rather than processing one transaction at a time up to 16 transactions must be processed. The following really havent given me much problems at this moment labels and textboxes. I use a for construct to create all the controls including a combobox. This is where my question comes in this form combobox has to be linked to a table in a database. But furthermore and this is where it gets complicated for me anyway each seperate combobox must move independly if i select row 5 in the table in combobox 4 combobox 5 which is havent touched should still be on row 1. How do I accomplish this. I'm using a webservice. I have tried passing a loaded dataset . The code that loaded the dataset is as follows

Dim DSInfo As New Project1.localhost4.AccInfo
DSInfo.Credentials = System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials
InformationData.Merge(DSInfo.GetBusinessJournals)

[Code].....

this code doesnt however provide a link to the table equallly creating a dataset in the combobox method ,loading it and then setting it as datasource also provides no link. I know i'm missing something.

VS 2010 Determine Type In Collection In DataSource?

Sep 7, 2010

I am customizing a DataGridView control. The DataGridView is supposed to be bound to a collection of some type (be it a List(Of T) or ArrayList or whatever), and the idea is that one can easily determine (at design-time in this case) which properties of the type have to be shown in the grid and which column header name they should get. One can do this using an attribute. For example, if I have a class Person with Name, Age and HairColor and I don't want to show the HairColor property, and want to show the Name property as 'Person', I would use:

vb.net
Public Class Person
<Grid.GridOptions(displayName:="Person", visible:=True)> _
Public Property Name As String

[code]....

I do this during run-time by simply looping through the properties of the bound type (in this case Person), retrieving the GridOptions attribute (if any) and checking the values provided. This works just fine except for one thing: I'm not really sure how to determine the type in the databound collection...

At the moment, I cast the DataSource property to an IList and retrieve the type of the first instance in that list (if any). If there isn't a first instance (the list is empty) then I don't know how to get the type... Often I know that it will be impossible to know the type. If someone is binding an ArrayList for example, then it's impossible to know what kind of items he's going to put in that ArrayList. Even the normal DataGridView cannot show any columns when databound to an empty ArrayList. However, the framework's DataGridView does show the columns when bound to, for example, an empty List(Of Person), or a Person array.

I'm pretty sure that casting the DataSource to an IList is not the correct way as all information about the type of items in that list is then lost. But I'm not sure what else to cast it to... ITypedList? IBindingList? I even considered List(Of T) because that's all I am going to be using, but besides the fact that the grid would then obviously only work for a List(Of T) I still don't know how to do this... I don't know 'T' so I can't cast it to a List(Of T)...

Access Database In Datasource?

Dec 11, 2010

A program that I'm designing for a local jewelry shop to print receipts and what not, there are multiple cashiers. I have written a database in Access with the Cashier ID, First Name, Last Name, PasswordI have added this to my dataset, it shows up as CashierDataSet1. What I need to do is verify the Cashier ID, and the Password match TextBox1, and 2. All the tutorials I have found are for accessing that database on the local hard drive, which would be fine if I could get rid of my UnauthorizedAccessException error. Any ideas or well known tutorials for using a database in a dataset without pulling the text boxes onto the form and creating that navigator ?

Adding Tables After Database Selected As DataSource

Dec 8, 2011

I know this is a very basic question but it has been awhile since I created a project with a database( been using a lot of XML). I created a database then selected it as a data source added some controls to some forms. Then I realized I needed to adjust some tables and I needed to add a whole new table. I deleted the controls and updated the tables that needed some adjustment. Now I would like another table. Can I disassociate the data source and do my adjustment to the database?

Have I created a problem with the binding object since I just deleted the controls on the form. I have written classes and some logic or else I might just start over. I guess I could copy those files but I am wondering if there is an easy way to fix what I have started. I realize that there are alot of questions here so any resource on how to modify a database that is attached to a VB.Net project.

.net - Distribute Data From An Internet Datasource To An Embedded Database?

Jul 13, 2010

I am developing a winforms application that will have an offline mode, so that it can access the data if an internet connection (or more accurately, a connection to my WCF service) cannot be established. I have decided to utilize SQL Server Compact edition on the client side of the application & was wondering what the general consensus is on the "best" practice for making the client application (Sql Server Compact) subscribe to the master database (MSSQL 2008).

Management enters information into a web based administration panel that I developed and is stored in a MSSQL 2008 database. After adding / modifying information, they can click a release "datapack" button which will increment a "datapack" version number, which will later be used by the client application to determine if they are in sync or not. When the client application is started, it connects to the internet and determines if the version numbers are in sync. If not, it pulls the information from the server.

That third step is where I'm a bit lost I thought about simply developing a web service that will expose a dataset containing all of the data and just iterating through it doing inserts, but that seems terribly inefficient to me. The full database probably wouldn't amount to much more than 5 MB total, so that led me to think it would be great if when management clicks the release datapack button, it would store the database in a file that could simply be downloaded and would replace the embedded database. Again, I'm a little lost on how that would work. This is my first time working with an embedded database, most of my work has been web/win apps that have real-time access to the data.

Sql - Visual Studio - Change Datasource After Initial Database Server Is Down?

Aug 22, 2010

Ok, so I've got this Visual Studio 2008 Project I was working with about a year ago perhaps. And this project had a datagrid that was linked to an external database running on a server off the internet. Now, this databinding was all done using Visual Studio 2008's built in features. But how can I now change the binding to a different server, without destroying the project? I've noticed that a lot of the code that Visual Studio creates makes a mess. So manually trying to change the datasource has allways f*cked up the whole project for me.

I'm not all that good with this stuff, that's why I used the built in features of Visual Studio. But I noticed that several things appear, like a binding source, and a dataset. Is it possible to do this? Perhaps even better, making these settings be controlled after the program has been compiled. The way it is now, it's all hard coded after compiling, and that kinda sucks. I remember trying to do this about a year ago, trying to bind these settings to variables stored in settings. But I never got that to work. Just throwing around ideas here

.net - In Linq To Entities - How To Do An Inner EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM - Type Of Query

Mar 6, 2011

I am trying to write a LINQ equivalent of

SELECT C1, C2, C3
FROM T1
WHERE T1.C4='xyz' AND
EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM T2
WHERE T1.C17 = T2.C24)
ORDER BY C3

I'm using EF CTP 5, so I have a DBContext variable named dbc, which includes DBSet objects T1s and T2s, based on POCOs T1 and T2.

In LINQ I write

DIM IND = From i In dbc.T1s
Where i.C4 = "xyz"
And (From t In dbc.T2s Where i.C17 = t.C24).Any
Select i.C1, i.C2, i.C3
Order By C3

Running the query I get the error message "Unable to create a constant value of type 'T2'. Only primitive types ('such as Int32, String, and Guid') are supported in this context." When I omit the inner expression (third line in the LINQ code), the query runs fine. I tried switching the orders of the inner comparison, to be t.C24 = i.C17, with no effect.
