Check System Temperatures / (CPU) Usage?
Dec 5, 2009
In visual basic is there a way to check System Temputures (Like CPU HD etc.) that the OS can read or any way to check CPU / RAM / Network usage in VB without using Task Manager? Post any links or stuff to search for bellow.

I am making my project for this semester. I am making "System monitoring Tool" so i have make a GUI and also get the all parameters but one thing missing I have tried to find from different places but not found that is the "continues line" that represents the changing values of CPU usage along time. same like "windows task manager" shows.

I'm currently working on a Visual Basic program that should be able to show CPU temperatures.To do this the cleanest way (in my opinion), I would like to use the Windows Management Interface (WMI) using
MSAcpi_ThermalZoneTemperature.Now, to my understanding, this requires that motherboard (MOBO) manufacture exposes these values to the WMI, which almost nobody actually do, but if they do, a "device" should show
up in the device manager called ACPI Thermal Zone under System Devices (let me know if I'm wrong).
As I would like to test my program and my current MOBO (Gigabyte GA-H67A-USB3-B3) doesn't seems to expose CPU temperatures to WMI (no

I want to check for a system update every .25 seconds. It's very important that it is always .25 seconds apart. I was trying to use do until/while...loop, but it wouldn't let me insert a delay. Does anybody know how to do this/where I could learn to do this?

I am working on a business related program, so I need to know if system date is correct -synced- with remote server. How do you do that in vb .NET winforms?
P.S: In addition, is there any way to raise some event when system clock changed to prevent hacks? I don't want users to change local date after logging in their account.

I have set my program up to run on system startup like so:
Code:
Private Sub enableRunOnSystemStartup()
My.Computer.Registry.CurrentUser.OpenSubKey("SOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun", True).SetValue(Application.ProductName, Application.ExecutablePath)
End Sub
The problem is that when it does start, it opens up in a window. I wish to provide the user with 4 options for what to do on system startup.
1. Don't run on system start.
2. Run and open a window.
3. Run but start minimized to the taskbar.
4. Run but start minimized to the system tray.
It's options 3 and 4 that cause the problem. If the user starts the program manually, it should start in window mode, but if the program starts from system startup, I need to check which option the user has selected and perform that option.
I was thinking of passing some sort of parameters to the program when it loads but I am not sure how these parameters could be sent to the program. One way would be to create a separate program that loads on system startup. When that program loads, tell it to load my program but pass a parameter to it to tell it that it was booted from startup. I feel like there should be a better way.
I was also thinking of getting the time of the last system bootup. Then comparing it with the current time, although this might not work if the user loaded my program as soon as they logged on.
A third idea I came up with was to use a shortcut to the exe file and check if the program was executed using that shortcut. I could place the shortcut in the folder ...AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup as opposed to adding it to the registry. But would this work on other Windows operating systems? I'm using Windows 7.
Ideally, this program should be able to run on other computers, but if that is too complicated, I'd rather just get it running on mine first.
Also, in case anyone is interested, my program creates a copy of the user's files on a separate drive, although I don't think this affects what I am trying to do with checking if my program was launched at system startup.

i have a program where the high scores will be saved in a txt file. of course, if the file is already in use, saving the text file won't work. is there an if statement i can do to check if it is in use? or could i check the last access time, and the last modify time and if the modify time happened after the access, i know its closed, and if the access time happened after the last modify time it is still in use?

I am trying to create a plugin system. I have the actual plugins working fine but now I want to implement a system that knows whether the plugin is installed or not. I can get the plugin name when the form is loaded (ex. "Plugin1"). I then want to check this against something to see if that specific plugin is already there (if not add it) and if it is there is it enabled. I was thinking of doing this with an xml file but thought that might be a lot of work reading and writing each value. I then thought of the My.Settings and was wondering if this is possible. I would want to create an "element" for the name and give it a value of either true or false.

Currently, to avoid errors from being thrown up due to invalid email addresses, I do the following:
Dim mailAddress As MailAddress
Try
mailAddress = New MailAddress("testing@invalid@email.com")
Catch ex As Exception
'Invalid email
End Try
However, rather than depending on Try..Catch, is there a way of validating that the email address will be 100% valid for the MailAddress type?I know there a plenty of regex functions out there for validating emails, but I'm looking for the function which the MailAddress type uses to validate its addresses.

I have computers joined to a domain. I'm writing a desktop application that ask for a username and password to authenticate user against Active Directory.Sometimes, user uses this application on the computer that is not joined to the domain.I'm using .NET 3.5, System.DirectoryServices, and System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagement. Code sample how to authenticate users:
Private Function ValidateExternalUser(ByVal username As String, ByVal password As String) As Boolean
Using context As PrincipalContext = New PrincipalContext(ContextType.Domain, "your_domain_here")
Return context.ValidateCredentials(username, password, ContextOptions.Negotiate)
[code]....
I want to know how to check if user is already logged in on domain computer, then I don't have to ask them log into the application again.
Update:If it can't be done with System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagemen, is there any way to do it?

I am currently creating an application to track timekeeping (a clock in/out system) and I am trying to work out the best way to do this.
I have a Main Form which contains buttons to ;
- Log in
- Out for Break
- In from Break
- Log out
When a user presses the "log in" button the logon form appears, the user then enters their username and password. What happens next is where I would like the help.
Process is as follows:Click Logon Enter Username/Password Check Logon Form for errors (eg no password etc) Check User is in Database (using SQL query) If user is in DB and username and pass are ok then refer back to the main form to perform Stored Procedure for what the user wants to do (eg logon or or out for break etc). Set label on main form to show user as logged on My question is should I be using a public variable and calling the main form again or in the user logon form having 4 options and using an IF ELSE to select the appropriate Stored Procedure?

I am trying to make a basic ATM system, iv got all the interface done and I have made the link to my SQL database etc. the part i'm stuck on is how I can run a check to see if a bank card number matches up to the users PIN number. To simulate the user putting a card into the machine I've used a combo box, and that lists all the cards, that haven't been flagged as confiscated (there's a column in my ATMCards table that I can set to true or false) then after the user has selected a relevant card there's another text box where they can enter in their PIN number.
Now what I want to do is, if they chose the card number 1234567890123456 in the combo box and they enter in the PIN 1234 into the text box, then, after clicking the check PIN Button if the pin is correct they need to be taken to another from where they can check their balance etc., and if its wrong they got three attempts after which point i want to flag that card as confiscated.
