Check For Instance Of A Specific Exe(s) Already Running?
May 10, 2011I'm wanting to add a some extra code within my application. My app is a single form that sets some environment variables before calling a one of two possible 3rd party executables to run. I have set via regedit the file association for files to open via my app but what I want to do is have my app check to see if either 3rd party app is already running. In short I'm trying to ensure either 3rd party app stays as a single instance.
If a user were to try an open another instance: 1) my application should simply terminate (no warnings, no msg boxes etc...) 2)the file that the user was trying to open should open within the existing instance of the 3rd party application. The problem is I don't quite know how to achieve both parts I imagine that this 'instance check' should happen as the first bit of code so that if no instance of either 3rd party app is found, then proceed with rest of my application. I have tested using some lines of code at the top of Sub New(). Here's what I have so far for checking for both 3rd party applications:

This gives me an error when I debug (Cannot access a disposed object)

Jan 26, 2012I have a Check Box that the use checks to indicate that a specific situation is present. When the User checks the box he gets a Message Box reminding him that the condition must be fulfilled. This works fine and the database reflectthe fact that the Check Box is filled.
At a later date, if the user calls this record and fills the form, the Check Box is triggered and the message Box appears in the middle of the form fill operation.
Is there a way to prevent this from happening. I want the Check Box checked but don't want the message box if the change is triggered by the fill process.

Jun 17, 2011Is it possible to define my list of strings like in 'good old' VB60, to use only on ebyte of memory for each character? .NET always seems to store any string as unicode, which doubles the required memory. The case is that I have a huge list of strings, all of the same size. It is about 50.000.000 items, 12 characters each. You can imagine I am running out of memory in no time. I tried converting them to arrays-of-bytes but in that case I loose the possibility to perform a "LIKE" statement in a FOR-EACH loop to check for a specific item.

Jul 11, 2011so in a program I'm working on in VB.NET I'm trying to make it so I can take in a list of strings (each on a different line). For each line I want to take in the line, and break it up into three parts. The first part goes from the beginning of the string to the first colon in the string, the second part goes from the first colon to the at symbol, and the last part goes from the at symbol to the end of the string.
For example, I'd take in a line of the series of lines: hello:world@yay
I'd want to break it into three separate strings of "hello", "world", and "yay".
How would I do such a thing in VB.NET?
