Why does a batch file run when I create it in Notepad, but not when I create it in my VB code?

I have been reading about ADO, SQL, datasets, data adapters etc and have gone into information overload. My next step is to create a simple data file of my own that I can manipulate, update, sort etc in VB Express. Do I need another piece of software? I read about MySQL, which I understand is primarily used to access databases on the net, but can that be used to create a simple local data file on my PC? Can you simply hard code something in VB Express?

View 2 RepliesI am new to VB and Visual Studio. Using VB 2010 express edition. I am making a VB project and from from inside that i want to be able to run a batch file that i already have.
My problem is i am not able to import this in my project. I tried adding it in the project from solution explorer but when i run the program its not able to find it. I am able to execute it when i copy that batch file somewhere on disk and then giving absolute path but not by including it inside my project.
If I create a DLL using VB 2010 express can it be used by previous versions of of .Net (3.5, 2.0)? Will the DLL use .Net 4.0 components, which is what I want. I don't see a way to force that to be the case.

View 3 RepliesI've got a chapter I'm supposed to be working through and cannot access the template for a blank solution. My instructions are as follows:From the "File" menu, select "New", select "Project", select "Other Project Types", select "Visual Studio Solutions", and select "Blank Solution."
I can see File, I then see "New Project", but not just "Project". I click on this and my only choices are :
Windows Form Application WPF Application Console Application Class Library WPF Browser Application
I've tried searching the installed templates for "Blank Solution", "Solution", "New Solution" and have no results. I've looked around for a couple hours hoping for a way around this and no luck so far.

The only thing that it does when I press the button, is starts the batch file, then goes to function searchtitle, which executes the batch file again when it finds out it didn't work properly.The button text doesn't change, none of the items are being added to my first list box, and I can't do anything to the window after pressing the button. It constantly opens the batch file every 5 seconds or so.

Plan is to host this server so people can login to use the the application and verify they have a valid account. I would like to host all the account information in SQL due to the possiblity of hundreds of users at any given time. I also need the ability to add data to the database for users registering for the first time. The SQL server will need to be able to access the SQL Server databases remote via WAN.
View 3 RepliesI created a SQL Compact Edition .sdf file in VB 2010 Express. I set the first column in the table as a Primary Key. But can I make use of it or am I limited to scrolling all the way through the file until I find the match I want? I managed to use a primary key with a SQL server .mdf file using the FindBy statement, though as a beginner, didn't really understand what I was doing so resorted to the more simple sdf file format to get me started. Goodness me there's so much to learn about data handling, it took me days to find out I didn't need a .Net provider in the connection string for Compact Edition.

The file installs Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2010 Express. All of the tools in it seem to be for web development only.Where is vb express 2010 download for creating Windows forms, console apps etc.? View 17 RepliesI have a VB 2010 Express application that uses a .mdb and a .xml file. Both files are part of the project. I am pulling my hair out to try to figure out how to make sure that these two files are deployed with the application. So far, I have only been running in Debug mode, so I'm focused on making that work.
When I click on the Application Files button on the Publish Tab of My Project, both the mdb and xml files are visible. I have tried setting both files to Data and Include. In either case, the mdb file is copied to the bin directory when I try debugging my application. However, the xml file is not copied no matter which option I select.
How can I get the xml file to be copied into the bin directory like the mdb file?
Is it possible to download a stand alone file for installing VS 2010 Expres Edition ?
