I am in the process of designing a computer control program to control a HF communications receiver (radio), and have found a problem with the Serial port. I am using VB Express Edition 2008. This module of the program is supposed to take an input string from another part of the program, format it, break it into 4 bytes, and send it to the radio in hex form via COM port 1. The problem comes in when you try to enter a frequency with an 8 or a 9 in it. The 8 or 9 is usually replaced by 45, ex.-input 9900, receiver tune 4545. The exact same thing happens with 8's, input 8800 and receiver tune 4545. All other numbers other than 8 or 9 work fine. The strange part of it is that sometimes the 8's and 9's work, and work correctly. For instance, 900, 1900, 2900, 3900, 4900, 5900, 6900, and 7900 all work correctly. This led me to believe that is may only be when the 8 or 9 is in the first position, but that is not the case, it also shows up in other positions as well. All other frequencies that do not have 8 or 9 in them also work. I ran into this same problem with VB Express 2005, and worked on it for weeks before giving up and going back to VB6.0. This same module (with exception of the port open command) runs flawlessly under VB6. I have even tried importing the MSCOMM control from VB6, but it gives the same results. In de-bugging mode, all of the inputs, decimal and hex seem to be correct, so the problem must come in after you click the command button, but before it leaves the COM port.

We are currently using for next statements in the class. I know how to prompt for and utilize the numbers that are input etc. My problem is the EVEN numbers part. I obviously have to determine if the number is even and then use a step value of 2 from there. But not sure how to determine if number is even or odd (guessing to use mod, but totally lost).
I am wounder if anyone might have a web site or no where I can find the information so I understand how to prompt the user to enter the beginning number and the ending number. And then to find the sum of the even number. Now does anyone know what a name convention is ? I have tried to look it up on the forums but cant find nothing on it.

When I close that window, the computer makes a ding sound. Why is that? Is there a better way for detecting enter being presses on a textbox and not getting that ding?

I work on a vb.net winforms app where we currently are using simple roles for security. We enable/disable specific controls based on if the current user has the required role. We are to the point where this is no longer granular enough.Our application is based on different physical locations we call sites. A user might have permission to do something (for example, edit a site's configuration) at one site but not another. Therefore, we now need to lookup permissions based on current user AND current site. Also, a certain user's permissions may be very specific to themselves ie. no other user's permissions are exactly the same as another user's. Therefore we need a security model that's more permissions based rather than role based.
What's the best way to design a new permissions model that can meet these requirements? I want to make sure that it's easy to implement the checking in the code (I don't want a million if statements sprinkled in our SetUIPermissions methods) and we don't want to have to update every user (400+ and counting) each time we add a new permission. Because of this last requirement I think we need to keep the idea of roles but possibly add/remove exceptions for particular permissions for specific users

If you click enter it divides your number by the numbers 1-12. Let's say you put 100 in that box. Then you clicked enter. Here is what I am doing: I have several servers that are used to run a piece of software. The software is started using a scheduled task. I can have up to three instances of the software running using three scheduled tasks, and three logged in users. Currently I am using a separate program running on two additional servers to make sure these two additional users are logged in, the scheduled task will not run if the user is not logged in. This separate program uses a saved Remote Desktop Session to make sure the users are logged in.

I have a procedure at the end of my console application that ask the user to either hit enter to end the program, or type s to perform another search. The issue I'm having is no matter what the user types in the program end. What I would like to happen is if the user types s, then the program starts over and lets the user perform another search. The program is procedural and I need to find a way to start back off at the top of the program which ask the user to type a name to search.

Ex: 153, 280, 600, 130, 20... The total then is out putted into a textbox in this format "13 Hours and 35 Minutes" I'm having dificulties making the conversion and the separation from hours and minutes. I understand that the total is divided by 60, but if we fallow the above numbers the total hours comes out to 1183 / 60 = 19.71. So I'm having problems with the .71 mnts or digits... so from this total I have to output the total of in this particular format: "19 Hours and ?
