View 5 RepliesI'm making a browser and for the favorites I'm using a reader and writer to read and write new favorite to a .txt file. Now if I edit the text file manually and load up the browser, the favorites show up as they should but the problem comes in when I add the a new favourite and then reload the application. Once reloaded the favorites seem to copy what was originally in the file and then whatever I added last at the bottom.
Here is the

WebBrowser1.Navigate(TextBox1.Text)

I have a help file which is in html format and is displayed in a form containing a web browser. I initially want this to be copied to the output directory so that it will be there when the programme is installed and i can then use the file path of the output directory to display the help file.
Can anyone advise how i would do this, and also if when the user installs the program, they decide to change the default output directory how i would i get my application to know where the helpfile will be?
I have created an RSS Feed Reader using Visual Basic that displays a list of the news item titles in a tree view style and its link when the '+' icon is clicked. From this I have used the web browser control in visual studio to create a small web browser that will show the web page of the link that is clicked in the tree view.What I am having problems with is that i would like to create a button that will open a new web browser window and display the same link in it that is being displayed in the mini web browser on my feed reader. To do this the code I have so far is:
Private Sub expandBrowser_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles expandBrowser.Click
If expandBrowser.Tag.ToString = 0 Then

View 8 RepliesI work in an engineering design house and programming is not my actual profession. And I am relatively new to VB .net (previous i had worked in vb 6)
I am working on an in house application. I am coding a simple application in vb .net. This applications takes a few inputs from user and calculates a result. Now I want to implement a simple functionality that user should be able to save the input and results just like most of the windows programs can in a new file format. And user should be able to open the save file when desired.
This is probably a pretty novice design question. I'm trying to work my way through a number of requirements and give the users the experience they're looking for.I've written a tool that does big calcluation-type things. It currently consists of a class library and command line tool (separate .NET projects.) We're using an Access database format as the file type because it can keep all the various tables together in one file. A few other items about the application: There are not many users. There are no concerns with scalability. There are not great concerns with updates. Desktop is desired. Not web.Using VB and .NET 3.5 SP1
I now need to develop a GUI front end that will allow typical File/Open and File/Save type operations.Users expect that they can open a file, edit it some, then either choose to save it or close it unsaved without any changes being written back to the file. Saving it would obviously save all changes affecting all tables back to the file.
Does it then make sense to use a temp file for something like a proxy then? To, when a user "opens" a file, copy the source Access file to a local temp file and then use that for the editing session? Then, if the user "saves", copy the local temp file back to the source path?
Update: [tagged with ms-access tag too] Also, I omitted the fact that users would expect typical File / Save As functionality too. I think the design I've put in question in this post is what is traditionally called the Proxy design pattern. Has anyone tried this (successfully!) with Access database files before? Words of caution or advice?

View 1 RepliesI am having an issue with both Adobe Reader and FoxIt Reader when trying to print a PDF document. Both issues are different but a solution to either one will allow me to fix my issue.The issue I am having with Adobe Reader when trying to print using the following code is that it will not print it to the network printer I specify but just the default printer.
Dim AdobeReader As New Process
AdobeReader.StartInfo.CreateNoWindow = False
AdobeReader.StartInfo.Verb = "print"

however, I am stuck at BinaryReader.actually this is what i am trying to acheive through VB.NET.say for the following file type :
JPG file = FF D8 FF E0
BMP file = 42 4D BE 4E
PNG file = 89 50 4E 47
GIF file = 47 49 46 38
the above are the 4-byte headers in Hex(raw) I need to read these headers of any given file using OpenFileDialog using Button1_click event,on selection of any given file(*.* filters ON)it should use the BinaryReader and look for only 4-bytes starting from offset 0, and it should not go to EOF marker (-1).and have a variable to hold this 4-byte header value, to run this in a database table which will check the same header value in the table and would display the corresponding extension of the file. from the table.
I can do this using case, if then...etc.however, I have to do it using Database and also i need to check for testing purpose to use MsgBox() to display this variable which is holding the 4-byte header.however, the MsgBox doesnt allow anything other than String.
PS: I tried studying the methods like:
FileOpen/Seek/Peek/ReadBytes().
but still not sure how to get them work.
I know how to open local .msg files in webbrowser in html format.The problem is when the .msg has embedded pictures, the only thing that appears is a blank space ("picture not found") where it is supposed to be.If I open the .msg file in Outlook, I see the images correctly, but in my program I can't see embedded pictures.

View 8 RepliesI'm currently coding a file reader for fixed-width tables in VB, and the compiled application seems to be sucking down memory like there's no tomorrow. I'm working with a series of ~50 megabyte files, but after running through several, the process starts taking up about 200+ megabytes of RAM, which is way more than it should.I've done some poking around, and I think the issue is the call to NewRow(), but don't take my word for it. Does anyone have some tips for optimizing this? If the problem's with the NewRow() call, is there a way of clearing this out? [code]
View 1 RepliesA colleague of mine is interested in getting the Microsoft Developer Support OLE File Property Reader 2.1 Sample (KB 224351) from the numerous download sites. I was wondering if DsoFileSetup_KB224351_x86.exe is available on any of the MSDN disks or is included with the installation of any Microsoft oftware/applcations from our MSDN subscription. He needs to put it on a private network and downloading exe files is not an option.

When the button is pressed the line is written to the file just fine, but if I restart my application, which calls Refresh_OtherLog() onLoad, it displays the lines of the text file as one line with the traditional square character depicting a character return. Why is it not putting that new lone as a new line in the listbox?
