Determine If Acrobat Reader Is Installed On User Computer?

Mar 8, 2009

I am creating a project with VB2008 Express Edition. The end result will be a CD containing tech manuals in pdf format which will be accessed via various buttons on a form. I am going to include Acrobat Reader Redisributable on the CD which the user can install by pressing a button on the form if required. What I want to do is this:- When the user inserts the CD into the PC, the form will load.When the form loads, I want to search the users PC to determine if Acrobat Reader is installed.If the Acrobat Reader program is not found on the system, then display a MessageBox to inform the user to install the reader from the CD.Would this involve searching the users registry? I would need to insert in my Form1_Load sectionTarget systems would be Windows XP/ Vista with programs on the C: drive as default.

I'm having a problem with closing Acrobat. I'm using vb.net to sign a PDF file in running Acrobat. After I'm done I close Acrobat and try to delete the currently signed PDF file, but I get an error message telling me that file is being used by another process. I tried closing and setting to Nothing AcroApp, AcroAVDoc, AcroPDDoc JSO, but still that doesn't work. I tried releasing them with Marshal.ReleaseComObject(...) still no effect.[code]

Finding The Page Number Of A Matched String In A Word File?

Jun 7, 2011

I am not an ardent developer in vb.net programming. But off late I am using vb.net to develop a windows application.

The following is what I am trying to do:

I am reading an excel file and storing the string value present in each cell, and trying to match the string in a word file.

The program works fine except that I am having problems in returning the page numbers of the matched string.

The page number value is always returned as one.

The following is a piece of what I had written:

If FindStringInFile(wordfilename, vValues) Then
currentPageNumber = word.ActiveDocument.ActiveWindow.Selection.Range.Information(Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word.WdInformation.wdActiveEndAdjustedPageNumber)
TextBox3.Text = currentPageNumber
End If

wordfilename is my word file and vValues is my excel string data

VS 2005 : Read Web Page Using Stream Reader?

Oct 19, 2010

From few days I am doing efforts to read web pages using webbrowser control in my desktop application. But it is very slower than my expectations(because I want to read lots of pages in minutes and browser control reads almost one page in 5 to 10 seconds), what I need is to read two or three tags written in web page.

So finally I decided to use something, which can give me only source code of page. I think StreamReader will help me to read it. I am not sure if it is flaxible with my purpose, or something else is there which can give me only html source code of web page.

I have written this code to read html code, but it gives error.

Quote:

System.ArgumentException: URI formats are not supported.

Webrequest Reader - Get The Text Confirmation Id And Not The Whole Page?

Jul 7, 2010

Alright so I have a webrequest on my program and it requests a login page, and I use the streamreader to read the webrequest and I set a textbox text as the text that I get from the site after the webrequest. The text I get is something like this:{"Code":null,"ConfirmationId ": 3023,"Description":null,"MessageType":"Success")I am wondering how do I get it to only get the text confirmation id (in this example it's 3023) and not the whole page.

Open File Retain The Directory Of The Last Opened File?

Jan 10, 2010

So I open files and do whatever with them right. I've set the initial directory to equal the last directory, but whenever I open multiple files, it never sets the directories properly. It acts as though nothing was opened there, so it takes the previous directory as the last one. Thoughts on what's not working? Here's the code.

Code:
With FileOpenDialog1
.InitialDirectory = LastDirectory
If .ShowDialog = DialogResult.OK Then

[code]....

I have multiselect enabled earlier and everything else works but this. When you open a single file, the last directory works fine. It only happens with multiselect.On another note, does anyone know why it freezes when I try to do a lot of files and use another program? I opened 700+ files to see what would happen. When I switched to a IM convo, it froze. When I left it to run, it worked.

Acrobat 7 Not Closing When Open With OLE?

Jun 21, 2010

I'm writing an app that prints of batches of documents to clients for posting. The printer uses OMR to collate and fold the documents into envelopes automatically.The document inputs will either be Word or Adobe Acrobat. I have routines to print off each document type while adding OMR on the fly.

The issue I have is that when the routine for PDF is run, the Adobe file is not closing properly. So when the next clients batch is being printed, there is an error saying that the document is locked by another user or process.I'm using the Acrobat 7 reference library and have Acrobat 7 installed on my machine (full blown product, not reader,) I'm closing the PDDocument, the AVDocument and the application in the code and I've even wrote a routine to kill the process to no avail.

PDF Opens In Acrobat X But Not Programatically?

Jun 18, 2012

I've written an interface with a 3rd party web service in VB.NET. The final step in that interface involves the 3rd party delivering to us (as a stream) a PDF document. After streaming is complete I save a copy of the PDF on our servers, so that our users can view the PDF by clicking on a link in our system. The PDF opens fine in Acrobat X, but when I try to open it programatically I an error saying that "the file is damaged and could not be repaired". I can also open the file in IE just fine, with no issues, and the same code that displays this PDF works just fine on lots of other existing PDFs that predate the 3rd party interface.

I have emptied out temporary internet files as suggested in some posts I saw online. I also opened the PDF in Notepad++ and the %PDF tag is first, and the %%EOF tag is last, so there's certainly no corruption visible in the document source that I can see. Below is the (very standard) code we use to open PDFs into a separate browser instance on our site:

PDFFile = System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory & Request.QueryString("LetterPath") & Request.QueryString("Letter")
Response.Clear()
Response.ClearHeaders()
Response.BufferOutput = True

File I/O And Registry :: Binary Reader For File Header?

Oct 23, 2011

however, I am stuck at BinaryReader.actually this is what i am trying to acheive through VB.NET.say for the following file type :

JPG file = FF D8 FF E0
BMP file = 42 4D BE 4E
PNG file = 89 50 4E 47
GIF file = 47 49 46 38

the above are the 4-byte headers in Hex(raw) I need to read these headers of any given file using OpenFileDialog using Button1_click event,on selection of any given file(*.* filters ON)it should use the BinaryReader and look for only 4-bytes starting from offset 0, and it should not go to EOF marker (-1).and have a variable to hold this 4-byte header value, to run this in a database table which will check the same header value in the table and would display the corresponding extension of the file. from the table.

I can do this using case, if then...etc.however, I have to do it using Database and also i need to check for testing purpose to use MsgBox() to display this variable which is holding the 4-byte header.however, the MsgBox doesnt allow anything other than String.

PS: I tried studying the methods like:

FileOpen/Seek/Peek/ReadBytes().

but still not sure how to get them work.

How To Tell If Certain Excel File Is Opened

May 26, 2010

I'm exporting my Dataset to an excel file, and I want to make sure I keep any file errors under control. One in particular that I'm concerned about is accessing a file that's already open. A general IOException occurs that says:
"The process cannot access the file 'C:Reports eport300.csv' because it is being used by another process."

Here is the line in which the error will occur:
Dim output As New IO.StreamWriter(path, False, UnicodeEncoding.Default)

I guess I could just throw a try catch around it, but what if an IOException happens that isnt related to this particular incident? Is there a way I can check to see if the file is already open before allowing this code to run? Especially when I'm using excel.
