It opens up the new form, but now I can not interact with my main form. It will not accept focus or allow me to interact with it.

Apr 7, 2010I have to write an application that consists of mainly one main form, but several different things I wanna display. Pretty standard I guess. So there is a menu, some controls, and the main stuff below (ranging form graphs, tables, dropdown boxes, print preview, etc). I would like to use it like one would use frames in html, design an object that is limited to a box or panel that I define. The literature I have does not give me a clear idea of how to do this (yet). The most obvious seem to be the use of MDI, open a predefined form with no borders, maximize it before showing and remove all minimize/maximize options. But that does not work so well. The form inside the MDI parent does not fit the size that is given for it when it is loaded. e.g.

So my main question is: Is MDI the way to go here at all or are there better/easyer ways to achieve this? If MDI is the way to go, how do I sucessfully restrict a child form inside another object, without giving the user any opportunity to resize (i noticed that I have minnimize/maximize/close buttons, even if I disable them on the child forms themselves)
Handle Events And Notifications From Multiple Sources To A Main Form In .net?
Sep 23, 2011I have a vb.net application in which there is a main form. There are around 10 classes each having their own functionalities like tcpactions, fileactions, serialport actions etc. The user interacts with the main form and does certain actions which will invoke the methods in these classes. Now I have a notifications textarea in the mainform and i want to show the current action being performed in those classes and their results in the notifications area.
for example when a user clicks a "Start Process" Button in the form i invoke the method "launchprocess" in a class "ProcessActions". Now this method tries to launch about 7 different process and after launching it sends notification such as "process 1 launched" or if it fails it sends notifications such as "process 1 launch failed".
I currently use event handlers and use them to show notifications but with the amount of events i have to handle it is getting cumbersome and i might have to add even more classes in the future. So is there a better way of handling notifications from other classes.
Forms :: Add A Login Screen In Main Form
Mar 17, 2011I've created a windows form application in vb 2010. I've got all my forms complete and now want to add a Login screen. One the login screen, after the username/password is entered and OK is pressed, I try to open the a connection string. Obviously if the connection fails, the user has entered the incorrect credentials. If the credentials are ok, True is returned and I then open up the Main form that shows the correct items for the logged in user.

Way To Be Able To Use Tab Control On Main Form And Transfer All 3 Other Forms
Feb 8, 2011I am looking for a way to be able to use the tab control on my main form and transfer all 3 other forms onto that main form that has the tab control. Problem being is that some functions are named the same in each of the septate forms i want to bring into just one for the tab control.Is there a way to separate the code for each form ON the main form of the tab control so i don't have to rename/recode each of the 3 forms i want to place on the main form of the tab control? Jun 22, 2010I was a vb6 user, done a few projects only with forums Now i am moving to vb.net(vb2010) and i have some trouble.Lets say we have a form(form1), a module(mod1) and a textbox on the form1.
i want to start a Sub (DoWork) in the module but in a new thread.

The DoWork sub does some stuff and when it's finished i want to change the text of a textbox1 in the main form and start another sub (DoWork2) on the main form under the main thread not the one DoWork is running under.

Forms :: Question After Splash-screen Shows Main Form Is In The Back?
Sep 24, 2010I have a splash screen, the default from Visual studio. It loads up, is shown for a few seconds, then, when it disappears, the main form is loaded. Now here is the problem: the main form appears in the back, behind the windows explorer window I load the application from.
The weird thing is that this only happens on some computers, particularly Windows XP machines.I tried a lot of things like BringToFront() or TopMost = true in the on Load event of the form but nothing seems to change this.
VS 2008 : Making 'main Window' Form Acting As A Container For The Other Forms?
Mar 17, 2009Am devloping an application with multiple forms, which reside on top of a main form. i.e the main application window. The 'child' forms do not need to be linked in any way as they do not pass information to the parent form, as all the parent form does is act as main window.Now I would like to know what is the correct way for the 'main window' form acting as a container for the other forms? So that all the smaller secondary forms stay focused on top of the main application form, that when the main window is minimized, so these forms should do also etc..
I have read other posts and they mention, leaving all the forms standard i.e. IsMdiContainer = False and then using form.showDialog() to call the secondary forms. This did not work for me as what happens is that as soon as I give focus to the main app form, the secondary form disappears underneath.I tired making the main app form IsMdiContainer = True and when it loads calling:
frmMemberForm.MdiParent = Me
Now this works, because I can click off the form and minimize the app etc and the frmMemberForm doesn't disappear. However if i close the MemberForm and reopen it, it looses this property and once again when it looses focus, it will disappear.

Jan 14, 2010I have a program that uses two forms. The program opens to the Main form, and the user can navigate to the other form from the Main form through use of a button. Here's the way I've currently written it: When the Main form loads, it declares and instantiates the other form during the load procedure. When the user presses a button, the second form is displayed by means of the ShowDialog method. On the second form, there is a Return to Main Screen button which closes the second form, bringing the user back to the Main form.
So, here's the structure of the code:

Here's my reasoning: Originally, I wrote the code so that a new instance of the second form was created every time the button was pressed. The problem was that whatever data was displayed on the second form, previously, was lost when the user returned to it a second time. Since the user would be switching back and forth between these forms, frequently, I needed that data to persist.
What is the best practice for accomplishing this:
1) Declare and instantiate the second form on program start, as I have done, and use the button simply to show the form?
2) Declare and instantiate the second form each time the button is pressed but maintain the variables on the Main form and pass them ByRef to a custom constructor for the second form? Is this even possible?
3) Something else?

The above code is what I used in VB6 to close all forms associated with my programs before my program closed. I have been searching for information on how to make sure all forms are closed when closing a VB2008 program.
I have seen info on using the Project Property Shutdown mode When startup form closes and I currently have this set.
Is this all that is really necessary? Will the garbage disposal close everything else to free up RAM?
Also, if I have several forms open and want to close all from the main form without closing each one individually, what is the best approach? Is there a collection like in VB6, go through the collection, compare it to the name of the main form and close it if it is not the main form?
Main Form "hiding" Secondary Forms?
Mar 31, 2009I have a windows forms application with several 'child' forms. (It's not MDI, and I don't want it to be).Normally everything runs fine, but on occasion windows gets into a state where all of the 'child' forms on the application are invisible when they should be on top of the main application. The oddest part is if I move another application's window over my application (i.e. explorer or notepad) the child form becomes visible within the boundaries of the other application. It's like windows is drawing my main form over top of the rest of the forms in my application without regard the z order, or topmost flag, or anything. If I cover the main form with a notepad window, etc. It draws my 'child' forms properly. Rebooting the computer and restarting the application temporarily solves the problem.

Mar 7, 2010I've written an application with about 30 forms and am almost ready to publish, my biggest concern though is that i'm not sure if its a normal thing to do having all these forms and hiding, disposing and showing forms throughout the use of the application.I've toyed with the idea of converting to a MDI Child / Parent interface as well as having one form with lots of subcontainers that are hidden and then hiding / showing them as the navigational buttons are shown.Ive worked on this application for about 8 months now, but would be happy to rewrite the interface and appearance of it if i know that it is not generally an acceptable practice having forms flashing open and closed while navigating through the application.

Nov 7, 2011Several years ago, I created a nifty data entry form that is called from a main menu. Due to recent user requirements, I had to create another form that is very similar to the data entry form. To prevent duplicate coding and testing, I created a class to inherit the existing data entry form. The issue is when I leave the class and return to a sub menu, the class is opening the main menu and the sub menu. How do I only return to the sub menu without the main menu appearing? Here is a snippet of my code. You'll have to scroll down to the very bottom to see the section that is causing issues. BTW, I coded the application in such a way that only one form should be open at a time.

TopMost Form - Messages Form Would Be Hidden By The Main Form
Nov 20, 2009I have a tool window that I want to stay above the main application form, but not stay on top of all windows forms. Similar to the floating properties window for visual studio - it always stays on top of the main VS window, but if I select another program, like internet explorer, the floating properties window will be behind internet explorer.
What I have is an application that has several forms that may be displayed at the same time. I have a Messages form that displays messages generated by the code in the form, that gives the status of the application. Obviously, the user would not normally be working on this form, but they may want it to be visible to see the status messages from the program (File saved confirmations, etc). So, my two options right now are I can set the form to be on top of all other windows forms or, when the user clicks on the main application form, the messages form would be hidden by the main form.

Aug 31, 2009the client has asked for all forms and classes to be hidden from the main project, so when he sells it, they will only be able to see part of the project and not all the classes and forms.My Solution: I have created another project called project2, and added all the forms and classes from main project, fixed all errors and compiled it.I deleted all the forms from the main project and added a reference so that it gets all the forms from the other project by referencing the dll file, but it does not seem to work and get a lot of errors.is there an easier way of hiding the forms and classes from the main project or do I need to do more then just add the reference.
