Modify Default Appearance Of Disabled Forms Controls?
Aug 30, 2011
When I set a control to "enabled = false", I want the textbox backcolor and forecolor to remain clear and distinct (white and back - respectively). Is there a place in VS 08 where I can define default appearnce for disabled controls? Or is there a beter way to lock control values other than using "enabled", that woulddn't affect apperance?

I'm disabling a button in vb.net and when I do, I cannot control the BackColor or ForeColor properties to change the appearance. I set new values for them but they don't get picked up. The disabled button looks almost exactly like my enabled buttons so you can't tell the difference. I'm using Flat Style buttons, but have tried changing this and it still doesn't seem to work. Is there some sort of trick to be able to do this?

How do you maintain the appearance of a disabled button in VB.Net? Basically, when I click a button, I want its background colour and font colour to stay exactly the same as before I clicked it.

I have a form with a button which is disabled by default, and a CheckedListBox with 68 items in it. What is the simplest way of enabling the button, when an item in the CheckedListBox is selected or unselected? I'm looking for something like If CheckedListBox1...any of the items state changes...Then Button1.Enabled = True
End If

Just started using Visual Studio 2008 and was hoping to convert my VBA UserForms to VB.NET with the intent of upgrading my antiquated UserForm controls to newer Windows form controls that match the operating system.The Windows forms I create in Visual Studio look great, but when I load them in PowerPoint or Excel, the form controls look just as ugly as they did before (e.g. plain, rectangular buttons).

Is there an "easy" way to change a control's ForeColor when it is diabled? Yes, I know that this goes against the Windows standard.
On our forms, we have buttons with a dark blue background and a white foreground (the design is dictated by marketing). When the buttons become disabled, the ForeColor goes to a dark color making the button unreadable.

I am making a configuration screen so that an administrator can easily determine what controls on a form are enabled according to a combo selection.
I have created a table (SQL2008 DB) to store the settings and need ideas how I can best implement.
The session form will start up normal with only a few controls enabled to start, but then when the user selects a "session type" from a drop down combo then the form will be configured for that type. Because there may be several different combinations, and I do want to offer the user the ability to add and configure more types as needed I feel like this may be the best method instead of hard coding.
Table Structure
SessionType varchar(25) not null PK
ControlSwitch varchar(50) Not Null
(Edit: I may add an additional DB field so that I can specify the default value of a control also)
Now what I thought I would do on the config form is have a series of combo boxes and the label represent each control with a value of True or False, then when saved it builds a string like example 1,1,0,1,0,1,1,1 or True, True, False etc.
The string would represent
ctrl1=on, ctrl2=on,ctrl3=off,ctrl4=on,ctrl5=off,ctrl6=on,ctrl7=on,ctrl8=on and so on.

I have aspx form with several textboxes.They are populated with values from a table via retrieval of a dataview.If the row count for the dataview is 0, then I'd like to reset the values in all textboxes. How can I loop through all the textboxes and set a default value?I've tried the following, but no sucess.
For Each ctrl As Control In Page.Form.Controls
If TypeOf ctrl Is WebControls.TextBox Then
CType(ctrl, WebControls.TextBox).Text = ""
End If
Next
My first For Loop was using Page.Controls but it returned only 1 count.The textboxes are inside a tabpanel (ajax), so do I have to locate the tabpage and then find all it's controls (for each tabpage)?

Is it possible to set a project default for VB.NET winforms projects so that the default Modifier for controls added to winforms is Private (not Friend)?I know there's a "modifiers" property in the properties window so I can set it for each individual control however I would like to change the project so from now on myself and other developers have to specifically decide to change from friend to private. (Which I would strongly discourage them from doing).I believe there is no way of doing this, but on another forum a while ago someone mentioned it would be possible with an add-in (but didn't name the add-in or where to get it).

I set the HourGlass, disable the button (to avoid ppl that are too used with FPS games), do the serial communication bit that last a couple of seconds, then the set the mouse back to normal and re-enable the button.And I have a few more like those through the software using text boxes or drop-down menus.[code]My form is set in design time to be KeyPreview = True and I even tried to set it again after the Click. The routine is simply not called and the ESC key on the keyboard does not hide the form anymore.

I would like to know how to make a button click only so many times until it becomes disabled.
I would also like to know how to keep what is put in a RichTextBox there, without erasing the other text;
Example: Two buttons, the first puts "1" into the RTB, and the second puts "2" into the RTB. However when I press the second button, it over writes the first value.
How can I prevent this?
You Can Ignore this question below;
Old Question: I am working on a counter, and want to know how to make a button show itself if I hid it.
I have:
CODE:
And would like to know how to make one of the buttons visible again, with one big button.
I know it has something to do with an "If" statement.
Answer: Button#.Show()

I have a query about dynamically added controls to a form. I have a series of buttons which are created and added at run time. I have a two drop down lists and two buttons which are created at design time. Button 1 creates a series of buttons called "Test 1.x" based upon the selection of the two drop down lists. This works fine and am happy with the logic.However.... Button two should remove all the dynamically created buttons from the form.This does not happen. What does happen is that 50% of the buttons are removed starting with the first one. WHen checking the loop it only enters the loop half the amount of times that there are buttons. Very strange. When the loop is run repeatability it will remove all controls. Why will my logic not remove all the dynamically created controls at once? What is wrong with my logic?
I attach two code snippets and the .net file for your consideration.Button method which creates the dynamically created buttons from the two drop down lists and adds to form
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Dim Count As Integer
Dim MaxHours As Integer
[code]....

How do I set the default font for controls (VB 2008), e.g., labels, text boxes, etc. I see how to set default fonts for objects in the IDE but not how to set the default for controls I add to forms. I hope I don't have to create custom controls as this would be time-consuming.

Private Sub ActivateControls(rdbutton as RadioButton, Optional txt as Textbox, Optional txt2 as Textbox)
End sub
When I call this sub routine It gives me the Error that Each Optional Parameter must specify a default value. So, Here I can't understand that what can be the default value of a textbox. What default value I can use here to remove this error.

I was just wondering is there a way to change the default name when you add a new control? I like to name my controls btnSomething etc... and if i could change the default names of added buttons from Button1, Button2 etc to btn1, btn2 etc.It will save me time when renaming.(Same applies for toolstripmenuitem buttons)Actually what would be ideal is if when i add a button, i directly go to the input for Text, and when i change that for the first time (like with toolstripmenuitems) the name changes according to the text (e.g. when you add a toolstripmenuitem in a context menu strip, if you set the text to "Reset" the name becomes ResetToolStripMenuItem. It would be awesome if i could make it automatically name to btnReset for buttons and tsmReset for toolstripmenuitems.)If there is a way to do this, even a difficult and not exactly pretty one involving macros and an input box, i would like to know

I have a vb.net 2010 form with 22 data bound controls from two tables held in a dataset which is navigated by a bindingnavigator. This successfully adds deletes and updates. However what I need is when adding a new record I need some of the fields to be pre filled out. More specifically I have points balance fields etc which could be any value but will normally be 0 on a new customer so I want to initialize them to 0 when adding new records.

I would like to know how do .net developers manage a large window application with a large number of controls, such as textbox , button, groupbox? I have seen a number of people do it this way : declare the controls as an array and initialize them one by one at run time . In this way it is easy to manage those controls because they can be accessed by array index; but this solution seems to require very good understanding of control's attribute such as its location, font etc. This could be a difficult task if the project is passed on to a less experienced developer and add changes to it.How do you deal with it?

I have a form that runs a report to pull info. (Not sure if this is even the correct subforum to put this on)And what this query is supposed to do pull info from combo box based on the start and ending numbers of orders for customers, but what I want to do is default the ending number to be what the starting number was as soon as the starting number is entered, but allow the user to change that if they want. I just want to make sure that it has a value. I tried to set the field to required, but that doesn't seem to be doing the trick.
