I have a field that I display via: String.Format({0:c},amount) This produces the string "$28.28" However, when I try to convert back to a decimal amount, I get an incorrect format exception: amount = Decimal.Parse(amount.Text, NumberStyles.Currency) I also tried it with NumberStyles.AllowCurrencySymbol with the same results. I verified that the value in amount.Text is "$28.28". Am I missing something? Shouldn't these two operations use the same currency symbol and formats?
View 2 RepliesI'm using a Microsoft Word form template to create objects in a form programatically, so depending on the information read by the program from the template.
So, I've got some fields where I store formula data for the form, in which I specify that the value for that field is obtained by multiplying other fields in the template. So I store in the string something like this:
"Text1.Text * Text2.Text"
So I need to convert these string values into variable calls to actually operate these values.
Part of my project is to retrieve a string variable from an external source (google docs) and parse it. This string represents width and height. I have no problem retrieving, I just need to parse it in to two strings. The string has 4 variations.
Here are examples:
3"x4"
3"hx4"w
3hx4w
3x4
The width is always the first number and the height is always the second. Sometimes, the width and height have decimal points. Any way to parse this into two strings of the numeric values only?
I am currently looking into the conversion of a string value to an integer. Obviously I will need to do some validation as to whether the passed value is in fact convertible to an integer.
At the heart of my question is this: the users' local is nl-BE (dutch (Belgium)), which means that we use a comma as decimal sign (and points as thousands separator); e.g. 123.456,78 would be a valid nl-BE number. Now, when using the numeric keypad, the
decimal key will yield a point, not a comma (weird huh!). So many user will enter 123456.12 and when converted to an Int, this should yield 123456.
The thing is that I want to cover all possible angles; both points and commas may be used as decimal sign by the users. So I wondering if anyone has written some code that deals with such a situation. I was thinking of an extension method that makes the
conversion based on whether a point or a comma is last used in the passed string (since no thousands separators should occur after the decimal sign).
What is the cleanest, most readable way to String.Format a decimal with the following criteria
start with a sign symbol (+ or -)
a fixed number of fraction digits
no decimal separator
right aligned
pre-padded with "0"'s
Is there a way in VB .NET to have a decimal variable with 40 decimal places?

If I have a text stored in db, file, resource does not matter:

Is there a way to do this: Dim el As XElement = XElement.Parse({variable containing text above}) and to have it evaluate the expression Integer.MaxValue?
I have written a program that uses an array of the english alphabet and Morse code. I also built a form with a input box for the alphabetic information and an output box with the Morse Code. What i am trying to do is basically type a word like "Hi" in the input box and produce the Morse Code equivalent in the Morse Code output box. [Code] This works but only one letter at a time. Do i need to Parse the string of characters one at a time, and then run it through a loop like i have created?
View 6 RepliesThe problem i have is that i have set up a decimal variable (which is what i want) and i set it to the text of a textbox. The program works great if I put in numbers, which is what i would expect. But if I accidentally put in a letter, I get an error, which i would also expect. What I want to happen is for a message box to appear saying error or something. Can anyone help me with how to do this?

View 4 RepliesI want to assign a Value to a Variable of Decimal Type to do a calculation, but when I enter the decimal value (a 28 digits to the right of the decimal point - very long numbers) it gets altered. I give below what I was doing:
Dim MyNumber As Decimal = 0.7777777777777777777777777774
But as soon as I finish typing the number, it becomes 0.77777777777777779 and appears as,
Dim MyNumber As Decimal = 0.77777777777777779
And, when the cursor is kept over the altered number it shows as "Double, Represents a Double - precision floating-point number." How can I get the value I wanted to stay without getting changed? I was able to get this long Decimal value as the result of a calculation and get that appears in a text box in the same program. Is there anything I should change in the "Visual Studio 2008" to get this ?
Is there a way of testing to see if a number variable is an integer, or a decimal?
View 8 RepliesI'd like to convert a string which contains a decimal number into string that contains the binary value, the octal and the hexadecimal value of that decimal number.Afterwards I also like to convert a string containing a binary, octal and hexd. number into a decimal string.Basically I'm looking for the functions:
dec2bin
dec2oct
dec2hex
bin2dec
oct2dec
hex2dec
I'd not prefer to rewrite a function, I'm sure the framework must have these functions already.
I'm trying to alter the existing number formatting in my company's application to make it more readable for international users. This is a stock trading application, so most stock prices come in with numbers precise to 2 decimal points, like so-> 17.23 We could also get ticks in that have precision out to 4 decimal points, so a penny stock might be 0.0341. The original string format that we were using for stocks was "#,##0.00##" Which would give us the format we wanted (essentially trimming '0's). The problem here is the ',' and '.' are forced onto the user, where in many other countries the thousands separator is '.' and the decimal point is ','. Boss man doesn't want to use "N4" for all numbers, even though this would resolve the globalization issue. Is it possible to have a globalized custom string format?
Other options besides writing some middle man code to internationalize numbers formatted the original way or another string.format method?
Any way (outside of writing rounding routines) to restrict the number of places after the decimal in a Decimal data-type variable?
View 3 RepliesI am making a change to an existing process. Currently the csv file (which can have embedded "," with the field in quotes), i being passed as an
IO.StreamReader parameter pStreamReader.
dim vLine as string = pStreamReader.ReadLine
dim vFields () as String = vLine.Split(","c)
Well ... obviously the split does not work with embedded commas in a field. Looked at TextFieldParser, but it is in the FileIO class and the module is passed a IO.StreamReader. Can it work?
Or how abour a RegEx? Does anyone have any suggestions? I have look around on the internet and it seems like a common questions with a bunch of wild goose chases.
