Is it possible to change settings in other forms by another piece of software like if there was a flag = True and I wanted to change it to flag = False or instead of loading Dim processorID As String = String.Empty I can input Dim processorID As String = 1234

Oct 17, 2011I am developing an application for internal use in our company. The purpose of this application is for document imaging. What we are wanting to do is print a barcode label to attach to documents so that when they are scanned in a piece of software such as vfiler will be able to read the barcodes and know how to file them.The main focus is our ERP system which is web based (PHP). We are wanting to modify the code to allow the user to print the barcode label immediately once they enter an order or PO. I have access to the source code for the ERP web pages. I don't know of any way to make a web page print to a printer without displaying the printer select dialog. So, I decided that I wanted to try and create a VB application that would do the printing of the barcodes. This would allow me to bypass the the printer select dialog.
Now for the question. Is there any way to have a web page (PHP) running on the server call a VB app to perform a task? So, if I had a button on the webpage and the user clicked it, that button would somehow send the pertinent information (Order number) to the VB app and the VB app would print the barcode. The VB app will always be running on the machine. The label printers will be Zebra USB label printers on each person's machine.
Pass Data Between BLL And UI In 3-layer (single Tier) Application?
Dec 4, 2009I am a fairly rookie programmer who is trying to learn the basics of n-layered architecture (DAL, BLL, UI). The application I am programming is a single tier, 3-layer application written in VB.NET (.Net 3.5). Layers as follows:
DAL
BLL
UI
COMMON - contains DTO's right now.
I am having trouble determining what to pass between my BLL and UI. My instinct tells me that I should only pass data to the UI, and not the full business object from the BLL. Consider two scenarios:
1) Pass the BO directly from BLL to UI. This exposes BO methods and allows the UI direct access to the BO, which seems bad.
2) Pass only the pertinent data from the BO to the UI. For instance, a customer has a Name and Address. This data is really what we want to show/edit in the UI, so we would only return that data to the UI instead of the full BO. The UI would then call to the BLL to update a specific BO.
I am inclined to use #2, but I don't know the best way to implement it. The way I have it programmed now, if I only return data from the BLL, all references to my BO's will be lost and the GC will claim them. Based on this, I have some questions:
1) Should I keep business objects alive between calls to the BLL? The alternative is to re-create them every time I pass data through the BLL, which seems wrong.
2) What is the best way to keep a BO alive in a single tier architecture (how to hold a reference if we dont pass it to the UI?)
3) How do n-tier applications do this? Do they keep the BO's alive in the BLL and wait for an update from the UI? Doesn't this require a lot of "book keeping" in the BLL to make sure BO's are released when they are no longer needed?

Nov 20, 2011I'm developing a web application that requires the user to log in using forms authentication. inside the webpage you need to download a desktop application that requires to login to the same system too. Is there a way to transfer the current logged credentials from the web application to the windows desktop application without need to login again?. Both applications shares a Login object from an vb.net interface.I tried to save the IP address in the Database but that don't work for me because the website needs to be accessed inside and/or outside of the company and the user cannot login twice in different machines.

Jan 8, 2012I was wondering if it's possible to store application data within an application without storing the data in an external file. For example, in my application, the user can choose where he/she would like to store the files that the application creates. I need to make the application remember the location that the user specified. I've tried using My.Settings to save this information, but since my application is standalone, if the location of the application changes, the My.Settings information changes as well (unless I coded it incorrectly before). I would prefer not to store this data in a .txt file or something similar.

Pass Parameters To SQL Stored Procedure From Application?
Apr 6, 2009I have created a database with on table that is very similar in setup to ProductCostHistory from the Adventureworks database. Using the adventureworks database as an example, when the procedure is given the parameters of date and productID it will change the EndDate of the currently active cost to the date value and insert a new record with productID as the ProductID and Date as the StartDate, leaving EndDate null for the newly inserted record. I am looking for a way to create a simple form with two textboxes and a button. textbox1 accepts the ProductID parameter and textbox2 accepts the Date value. when the button is pressed, the stored procedure is executed and the table is updated. This seems pretty simple and I am very familiar with tieing stored procedures to a table in a dataset when each prcedure handles only a single simple action (either, SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE but not a single procedure that combines UPDATE and INSERT as the procedure described above does). I've done some reading and played with this on myown but can not find the simplest straightforward way of accomplishing this seemingly simple task.

Mar 14, 2012I am developing an VB.NET application that reads data from the serial port and tcp socket, then I'm processing this data and store it in Database server. This application will be started all the time as long as the computer is started. On the server there is installed an apache server with some php scripts representing the "visual interface". From there the users can see the readed data from the VB app. The need is when an event appear in the apache server (such as button pressed), some data to be passed to the running VB app, and eventually trigger an event on it. I've considered some variants like start an timer that reads continuously some tables from the database that the php script writes onto, or read an xml ot text file, but I think that this may slower the communication and it is a source of exceptions or errors.
For example: An user opens a webpage, just to say test.php. On the page there is a button. The user pushes the button. The result of pushing the button has to trigger an event on the VB app and cause sending data trough the serial port or tcp socket. OR - The VB app has a timer that scans for pressing the button on the test.php.

Jan 22, 2009I currently need to build a Automation Add-in for Excel. This add-in will load a recordset from Database to Excel. I would like to have function A() that I input in Cell as a formular. This function A() call a the add-in to load the data from Database to Excel. The data should be a matrix. So that means I would like to set in Excel worksheet a range of data by just calling single function in a cell. (I am sure there should be some way to implement it)As I know if I develop a shared Add-in by VB(or VB.Net) and in the add-in, I can get an Object of Excel.Application. By this Excel.Application object, I can get full control of Excel inside the Add-in. That means if I define a sub that load datamatrix from database and using the Excel.Application object I can populate the data matrix to the Excel.
I have done much research on internet and I now have built a shared Add-in for excel. I should say this add-in works fine without invoke the Excel.Application Object that I have tested. But when I call the Add-in function that invode Excel.Application Object from Excel I got an error as below:

Jan 15, 2010Just started VB programming this week and have found a wealth of information about what I'm trying to do. Problem is, some of it is more complete than others.Here's what I'm trying to do:In Form1 (my main form), I want to instantiate a class that contains a couple of properties (speed setpoint and position setpoint). When I click a button, I want to pass this data to Form2 and populate two textboxes on Form2 with the properties of this object. I want to manipulate the property values on Form2 and click an OK button which closes the dialog and returns the manipulated data, updating the property values of the object. Here's the algorithm I'm following:1) On Form1, instantiate the class2) On Form1's "Pass Data" button click event handler, instantiate a Form2 object and invoke the ShowDialog method, passing the object as a parameter.
3) On Form2, overload the ShowDialog method to accept the object as a parameter and modify the method so that it returns the manipulated class data.4) On Form2, in the ShowDialog method, populate the textboxes with the class data that was passed in.Here's where I get stuck. If I press the OK button on Form2 (DialogResult.OK), it returns me to Form1, but what hook do I have in Form1 to receive the manipulated class data that the ShowDialog method is returning?Here's an example of what I'm thinking about:

Dec 18, 2010I have a data logging application that stores data in a table in a MySQL database. Data with a TimeStamp is logged into the table anytime the data from the sensor changes. This means that there maybe 2 seconds between data points or there maybe 20 seconds between points depending on how the data is changing.
When I need the data I have 2 dates and use this command to fill a table..SELECT FROM myTable WHERE timeStamp > date1 AND timeStamp < date2 This gets all the data that has a TimeStamp between the given dates, but in most case the first date in the returned table will be after date1, so I need to get the data from one row before the date returned in the table to know what the data was at date1.How can I get the data row that immediately precedes the returned data set?

Aug 26, 2009I am trying to write a thread safe application that contains 3 threads : -
1 - Data acquisition and decoding
2- Data graphing
3 - FFT and filtering
Thread 1 is collecting bytes from the serial port and converting them int integers (so taking two bytes) after is has captured 64 Bytes and converted into 32 integers, it then needs to pass the array to the graphing thread.
The graphing thread then plots the data and waits for more data.
Thread 3 also waits until thread one has collected 2023 integers and takes these and performs some FFT calculations (which take time).
My question is how do i share the arrays between the three threads without deadlocking the program? as the serial thread will be flying around reasonable fast (1000 bytes per second) so it will synclock onto the shared buffers for most of the time.
Originally i was going to use two synchronised queues, so when thread 1 has collected 32 bytes it queues the data into the graph queue, and once it has collected 2023 it queues the data into the FFT queue.
Then thread 2 and 3 can simple dequeue the data.
However using queues has the overhead of casting the data in and out, and as i know the data type i was planning on using two arrays :-
Dim GraphArray() as ushort
Dim FFTArray() as ushort
Then Thread 1 adds data to each thread, and thread 2 and 3 simple wait until the correct amount of data is available before removing the data. my question is there an array type that allows me to remove x amount of data from an array?
Because i cannot do this easily with the ararys defined as above (GraphArray, FFTArray), as i was planning on making them 1mByte and allowing thread 1 to fill them Knowing they should never overflow and then let thread 2 and 3 remove x amout of bytes at a time unless there is a better way of doing it

Feb 9, 2009I am in the process of developing a messaging framework for a windows application that sends messages to a java application. To be precise when the win app wants to send a message it simply drops the message in a common database table which will be picked up by the java app. The windows application is deployed across 10 application servers (10 instances) over citrix for load balancing.Each instance of the application is capable of sending a message to the java application and each of these messages should have a unique id. From my end I need to make sure every message generated has to carry a unique id so that they can be identified when necessary. All the messages can be cleared every day or two.i am not quite sure about a best method of achieving this. Initially I wanted to create a static method that serves the next available id (incrementing the last id by 1). But this approach willn't guarantee unique number as the application starts only when at least one user is logged on. For e.g .On one server the app starts when a user logs in, he then sends a message and then the application stops when that user logs off. So when a next request for the app comes to that server a new instance will be started.

Apr 26, 2010is it possible to make one application send a task to another application and recieve the result from that secondary app?i made a text editor program and i added a scan feature and i made another app that has ocr capabilities.The scanner ability is in my text editor program, the ocr program doesnt scan you have to input an image into it and it will give text result a few seconds later.the prob is alot of times the ocr code uses sooo much memory and crashes when its incorporated with my text editor, but individually each application works fine and doesnt take too much memory. Memory wont be even an issue if the ocr program is standalone so that when it is done decoding image the application can be made to exit. now here is the question, how do i make my text editor send the image to the ocr program and how do i make my ocr program send the text back to my text editor? is it possible? i mean the only way i know off is creating temp files in a certain folder and having a timer on each program that keeps waiting for temp files. That just seems like pretty lame coding to me i was wondering if there's a better way?

There is a drop down where you can select options to change the criteria of the report. I wish to convert this app to a windows executable which will take all those select options and generates pdfs based on the crystal report. the executable will be triggered by windows task scheduler...or maybe command line app?
Obviously this will be somewhat of a re-write. What would be the best way to start this as? a crystal report application or a windows application.
Application Does Not Return From Call To System.Windows.Forms.Application.DoEvents?
Aug 2, 2011I have a windows forms application written in VB.NET which scrapes information from serveral web pages (who doesn't right)? Anyway, I am having problem with one particular site where partway through the page navigation my application hangs. When I press pause (or break) in the debugger, it stops on a call to System.Windows.Forms.Application.DoEvents.
Resuming execution shows that it really is stuck on this line (it does not reach the next line of code). It also hangs about the same point each time I run it (at least its consistent). Since System.Windows.Forms.Application.DoEvents yields to other threads on the same processor and then resumes execution of the current thread, I think the problem is that some other thread is not behaving well (not returning from some event handling code). I thought Windows 7 was pre-emptive, which makes me
doubt that theory but I really don't know.

The program scrapes somewhere between 12 and 14 pages before it gets stuck on the call to DoEvents. Does anyone have a clue why this would happen? Why would any call to DoEvents hang?
