VS 2010 Pass Arguments To Application After Started?

Sep 4, 2009

how to use Visual Basic to pass arguments to an application after said application was started. Example, "myapp.exe -d" enables debug mode, I want to be able to start myapp.exe then have a checkbox labeled "Debug mode" in Visual Basic. Upon "Debug Mode" being checked, it passes the argument -d to myapp.exe. Upon it being unchecked, it withdraws that argument from myapp.exe.

BUT i need to pass another argument path to game\game.exe -mod:"modname here" -server:"server ip here":"server port here" -noautoplay now i can get it to load with path to game\game.exe -server:%Host%:%Port% -noautoplay some code from the app....

arguments = arguments.Replace("%Authority%", u.Authority)

Pass Arguments To Service?

Jun 16, 2009

I have an application which sits on general users machines. What I want to be able to do is for the users to create a new directory through the application that will create a directory on a server that they do not have access to for secutiry reasons. Then the users can create a file within the new folder through the application, again which they do not have access to. The whole idea is to have an application that manages files that are able to be accessed by many users through the application / backend database, and therefore we do not want the user to be able to manipluate the folder / files by mapping to the location. Then if the user wants to work on the file he requests it through the application which then copies it locally to their machine.

The way that I can see this working is by having a service running on the server that has access to create folders and files in this location. The user can then request the creation of a folder / file through the application which then instructs the service to create the folder / file.

Is there anyway that I can pass arguments directly into the service on the server, or would I have to create an entry in a database on the server that the service is monitoring and then performs the request?2a. If I do have to have the service monitoring the database if I make the service check this every second will this slow the server down and will the server guys at a company be OK with this running this quick?I also need to be able to let the user know through my application that the folder / file has been created successfully, therefore what is the best way to do this? Again get the service to write to the database that the request has been completed? If this is the case then my app will have to poll the database continually to check the database that the request has been completed, this could slow the application down?

VB 2010 Forms App Project Using ADO.Net Has Started Crashing VS 2010 Whenever Load It?

Aug 11, 2011

well until a few day ago. I don't know what I have introduced to cause the problem but now, whenever I load the project, VS 2010 (SP1) crahes. If I delete the project's suo file, the project loads (really quickly) and all is well until I exitVS 2010. When I re-run it and try to load the project, it crashes again unless I delete the suo file. The program can be built for x64 and x86. Now, when I reload the project (after deleting the suo file), it comes up in Debug - Any CPU mode. I can change from Debug to Release and from Any CPU to x86 but if I try and change from x86 to x64, VS 2010 crashes. This is not always the case though. If I build the x86 version and then switch to x64, all is well and I can build the x64 version. Obviously, there's something wonky going on.

Determine The Folder WPF(xbap) Application Was Started From?

May 18, 2011

I have been investigating this for several hours. I have found numerous links, including several here on SO which claim to show how to find the startup path, or the application directory. All of the solutions suggested return a location:

C:Users<my user name>AppDataLocalApps2.0XO8PWL8B.5HH1GZX7M0H.N1J<temp location>

When my WPF xbap is run from a remote location. I need to determine the actual folder of the remote location. I am deploying this to an internal server ABCDEF, so in order to run this application I am entering:

\ABCDEFmyApp.xbap

I want to programmatically determine the server and folder. My reason for this is that each time you publish a WPF with "automatically increment revision with each publish" turned on. The folder where additional DLL's are located changes, additional programs that this program depends on. I want to be able to dynamically determine the correct folder to look at.

I have tried:

'Dim path As String = Reflection.Assembly.GetEntryAssembly().Location
'Dim Path As String = System.IO.Path.GetDirectoryName(System.Reflection.Assembly.GetEntryAssembly().Location)
'System.IO.Path.GetDirectoryName(System.Reflection. Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly.Location)
'application.StartupPath

All of which did not work. These links suggested many of the methods I have tried:

VS 2010 Getting Started With Linq, Code Is Very Slow?

Oct 19, 2011

I am using DataSet.ReadXml() to create a DataSet from the following XML file, so that I can quickly query it using Linq.[URL]..I then use the following object to create a DataTable which can be used as a dictionary, with a ConvertToFriendlyFormat function that takes an Emulator_Id and and a string that corresponds to a DicEntry node's StoredFormat attributed, and return the same node's FriendlyFormat attribute.

This does work BUT it is extremely slow (~11 seconds to call it ~220 times). I have been unable to figure out how create the DataSet when the object is initialised and just query the simple DataTable in the ConvertToFriendlyFormat call. I guess this is what is slowing it down?
