I am building a search engine in vb.net which would have to search for a word entered by the user in 40 text files within the project directory. It should return the results as the total number of matches (text files) and the number of times this word is in each file.

I need to do a query in which I can find all records in a table in which a user enters a search word. The word to be searched for will be a word in a column. If there's a table named solutions and in the table there is a field named description; i need to be able to pull up all records where for example the search word is 'printer' is in the description column. I don't have any code or database structure to show. I first need to know if this can be done. Can someone supply a code snippet example or tell me what SQL keywords will do this, or some pointer?

View 1 RepliesWindows forms Application. VB .NET 4.0 In my application I have a global boolean variable that keeps track of when changes are made and when they are saved called changesSaved. On closing even it checks the value of this variable before closing the window.. I am using textchanged event to automatically change the value of changesSaved to FALSE when text is changed.. Problem: The group box items are being populated dynamically so the user can edit the values or simply just view them. This dynamic population is causing the textchanged event to fire because the program is changing the text value of the box to put the values in that are stored in the database. The textchanged event should not fire unless the user him or herself enters a value or values in the text boxes..
Is there a way to specify the source i guess you could say for the text changed event or another way so that it will only fire when the user inputs information.??? Functions are as follows: The first is called by the load event to place the values in the box... The next one is the one that is being called as a result of the first one and is also the one that is causing the problems.

My app is a Reader for personal use. I have it setup By Books of the Bible and by Chapters and verses.
What I would like to be able to do, is to search for Pharaoh (any word) in a textbox, click the Search Button, and every occurrence of Pharaoh (not just the word, but the entire Verse: EX: Gen Ch7:14 Blah Blah Blah Pharaoh Blah Blah. Am writing a windows app using vb.net 2005. The app captures a string variable from the user. As each file within a directory is read, I want to match the stored string within each file. If I find a match to the string, I want a list box to be populated with the name of the file. I have added Imports System.Text.RegularExpressions and tried using the match collection.
For example: My direcotry has 5 text files. I want to match a string "PARENT" in the text of all these 5 files. The list box should output the name of each file where the string was found.

UPDATE : This is a .NET Winforms application and I'm using normal Text Control.
NOTE: I tried using concat() method, join method and even tried to insert just text(which turned out editable) but none of them worked as I wanted. I was thinking if substring method will work but I only have basic idea of how substring works. I want the letter "N" to be inserted into the text box when form loads and when the user enters 4digits(OrderNo2.text) which should be joined so that it can be saved together when I clicked on save button.

View 3 Repliesi'm currently making a client database program for work that stores data in multiple text files (so that the information won't be confused as to which info belongs to who in the database). Each client has his/her own text file, which isn't really a problem although i realize it's a bit messy. A listbox holds items, each item a person's name.When the listbox selected index is changed, the streamreader opens the corresponding textfile, which is as such: "John Doe.txt", and populates the correct textboxes with the information stored in "John Doe.txt".What I'm unfamiliar with is implementing a search function.
1. search query entered
2. streamreader reads through all txt files in a directory looking for matching keywords.
3. if a match is found in a txt file, it looks at the name ("John Doe.txt"), gets the corresponding listboxitem, and finally, once the textboxes have been populated with the info in the file, highlights the matching keywords.
4. then i figured if there was more than 1 match over more than 1 txt file, you could repeat the process and skip to the next match via the tab key (like the find feature of a WebBrowser or other such application).
What i don't understand is how to read multiple text files, search in keywords, highlight the matching keywords, or the tab function..I know that's a lot to ask on a forum, but I had nowhere else to turn.

To grab a specific file from a specified directory, read the lines and display them in a text box. What I want to do, is search for multiple text files in a specified directory, display each name in a Listview and, as I click on them, their info is displayed in the text box below.
