Background: I need to create a user account and Modify it's registry before the user logs on the first time. Creating the account is done by using the Winnt provider (works great). To create the profile I'm trying to use Process.start to launch a process as the newly created user. With the use of loaduserprofile property the users profile gets created and i can do my regwrites without problem.

I have a vb.net 2008 application that is supposed to run at startup. After meeting certain conditions, the PC is supposed to restart. Below is the code that is failing:
System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("shutdown", "-r -t 00 -f", myUsername, myPassword, myDomain)
myUsername and myDomain are both strings while myPassword is a SecureString. The application works properly when execute manually, but give the following error when executed from startup (either by placing in the startup folder or by adding to the registry):
The directory name is invalid
Also, the program executes properly when the last 3 arguments are left out and the user has the necessary rights.
How do I force a restart using an specific, alternate user credentials on startup?
I am looking into programming an application that detects noise levels. If the level is over a specific threshold it will lock a logged on user account. The idea behind this application is to reduce noise levels in a busy IT suite. My question is has anyone written anything similar and did it prove to be effective and is VB the best programming language for the job?

I have tried to make a textbox for every username and password,And then save it into my.settings And then I run the finished application, it works fine to store the information. but if I copy the application after I had entered some user/pass information. View 4 RepliesLooking to make a simple VB form, that has three text boxs on it. One for a users username, and two for passwords. What I want to do is provide teachers with this form, they type in a students username, and if that username is found in AD it enables the two password boxs. Then the teacher can type a new password for that user in the boxes (the second one obviously being a validation) and then when they click save, it updates the AD account with the new password. Any ideas on how to do this? Does anyone have any code?

View 2 RepliesI can access the current Windows user, but I want to give an admin the ability to enter an alternate username and password for a different Windows Active Directory Account without having to logoff and log back in. Once the account is authenticated, I need to use it in a connection string to sql server. I know I could do this for a SQL Server login, but this is Windows Authentication only. It was installed with ClickOnce. Is there an .exe file on the user's machine?

The program is supposed to locate the sAMAccountName property in AD through an LDAP connection, and then do two things. 1) unlock the user's account by setting the "LockOutTime" property to zero and 2) change the password to a pre-defined password in the code. I've got the program unlocking accounts, but I can't get it to change passwords.
I've tried the line "DirectoryEntry.Properties("userPassword").Value = "xxxxx". I've also tried the DirectoryEntry.Invoke("SetPassword", New Object() {"xxxxx"}) but neither of them work. The first one throws no exceptions but doesn't change the password, and the second one will give me the message "Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation".

However this application needs to be run as administrator. Is there a way to get the application to bring up the RunAs prompt as soon as it runs, so the user doesn't have to do a Shift + Right click > Runas?

I have made my application to start automaticly when windows start (registry ../currentversion/run/appname + path). In this mode the application start minimized and an little icon appear in the notification icon area. With this icon you can maximize the app or exit it.If you exit the app and start it again using the Menu (Start/programs etc) than the application start in minimized mode (and in this case I would like to have it in normal mode) because the setting autostart is still true.Is there a way you can detect when the application start when windows startup using the above registry or when people click on an icon in the programs menu (or desktop)?

The issue I'm having is no matter what the user types in the program end. What I would like to happen is if the user types s, then the program starts over and lets the user perform another search.
