this is the problem.Write a program to generate a business travel expense attachment for an income-tax return. The program should request as input the name of the organization visited, the date and location of the visit, and the expenses for meals and entertainment, airplane fare, lodging, and taxi fares. (Only 50% of the expenses for meals and entertainment are deductible.) The output is displayed in a list box that becomes visible when the button is clicked. Sub procedures should be used for the input and output.sample input and output can be shown here: Book reviews: An Introduction to Programming Using Visual Basic 2005. Chapter 4 Programming Projects
my error is "too many argument in Public Sub InputValues(.......)"
my code is this: i used indexof because for example the user inputted a date with a year then the output will ignore the year. only the month and specific date will appear.

I have a combobox in a form, I want to fill it with names I have stored in a database. I know I have to use the fill command, but I am not sure what code I need to use. I imagine I need to place this code in the form load event, where I wrote my code to connect to the database. Do I need to create a sql fill command, select Names From Users, then execute that command in the combo box object.

I am converting some VB6 code which passed an unknown form object to a class, which then used the passed form object to reference the calling form and direct the data from the class as follows:
The Called Class in the class clsGetRecord
Public Function Execute(ByRef FRMForm as form) as booleanFRMForm.List1.Additem(SomeData)....Execute = SomeBool End Function
The clsGetRecord is used by many different forms which receive data all have objects called List1 as: The Calling Form for the form
frmThisFormPrivate function() as booleanDim objRecord as new clsGetRecordbRet = objRecord.Execute(frmThisForm)
The passed form object which will receive dataEnd function. Is there any simple way to do this since the calling form object is unknown at design time?

I'm trying to set the format of a column in a datagridview.When I put the format statement in the on load event for the form, it has no effect. When I put it in the cellformatting event I get the "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" error. I checked the column name. What I am doing wrong?
This is the code:Private Sub MeetingTblDataGridView_CellFormatting(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.DataGridViewCellFormattingEventArgs) Handles MeetingTblDataGridView.CellFormatting
Me.MeetingTblDataGridView.Columns("Starttime").DefaultCellStyle.Format = "HH:mm:ss"
End Sub What I'm trying to do is get rid of the date part of a Date/Time field (stored in an Access database) in a datagridview column.
dp.SyntaxHighlighter.ClipboardSwf = '/dp.SyntaxHighlighter/Scripts/clipboard.swf'
dp.SyntaxHighlighter.HighlightAll('09dde30f062e451a854266e66205b1cf')

I'm having this problem with my code and cannot seem to get past it although it was working fine before. The error is "An error occurred creating the form. See Exception.InnerException for details. The error is: Object reference not set to an instance of an object." The code is:
CODE:
I am trying to get information to be pulled out of a database and show in text boxes on another form (frmviewsdets). The error occurs when it gets to the line frmviewsdets.txtsnumber.Text = rdr("StudentNumber") and even when a breakpoint is applied there it just moves on to the next and so on.
I have tried to show frmviewsdets before I pull the data out of the database beut I get the same message.

I have a solution with several Projects in it. There is a Windows App project (called ImportClient), and a Class Library (Import.Library). The Import.Library has functions to perform data imports (I have other applications in the solution that also need to call it). But the interactive application, I want to be able to pass in some form controls, and have it update the GUI. No problem. But, I also want to execute a DoEvents() so that the loop execution doesn't hang other interaction to the app.
So, ImportClient has a reference to Import.Library. But I can't add a reference to ImportClient to the Import.Library, because the compiler complains about circular reference, etc. I don't know how else to define the My.Application object of ImportClient as a parameter to the data function in ImportLibrary.
(I realize this is a dumb question - problem is, for this project I have a tight timeline, and haven't learned how to do the BackgroundWorker process. If you think I could pick it up quickly, I'm open to some hints about how to update the progress bar on the GUI, and how to pause / cancel the background task.)

I've got 3 forms that have exactly the same functions, so I decided to create an interface.
public Interface IExample
public sub Add()
Public sub Edit()
[code]....
At this point, objfrmExample is now instantiated, even though I've not done a "objfrmExpample = new [what-goes-here?] " and I'm curious as to why.I could possibly guess that because you cannot instantiate an interface variable, then vb.net automatically creates an instance. But thats just a guess. The question is , what is meant by declaring a variable of type Interface, and how does it work?

My problem is when i try to call Application.Run() in a application without a form i get "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." when i run it outside VS. but if ran in debug or release mode it works just fine. i may just be forgetting to setup application right, but ive done it before in this same manor and it worked fine.
Sub main() 'this runs first.
AddHandler Application.ApplicationExit, AddressOf ExitEventHandler
dbg_f("handle added")
[CODE]...
Commented out init_timer and init_ready, and now it causes the same error for the myName line. there seems to be something wrong with class Application. btw theres seems to be something wrong with the forum code formatting.

how to use the VS 2010 IDE tools in a way the Microsofties didn't specifically intend. But since this is something I immediately tried without success.
I have defined a .NET 4.0 WPF Application project with a simple class that looks like this:
Public Class Class1
Public Property One As String = "OneString"
Public Property Two As String = "TwoString"
[Code]....
The expected result was that "OneString" would appear next to "One" and "TwoString" next to "Two" in the running window.
The question is: Why didn't this work? What will work instead? If I put bindings in a DataTemplate, it works. Blend, with its sample data stuff, implied that this should work, but it doesn't.

If you want a instance of an object to be created when a form loads or another class is created, you have two options:
Public class example
private IAmAObject As IAmAObject
public sub new()
[CODE]...
Or like this:
public class example
private IAmAObject as new IAmAObject
public sub new()
[CODE]...
I always use the first one. It's more type work but I think it's neater. How about you people and is there any real difference between the two?

Hi
I've got a pretty general question about the best practice in passing an object reference to a Form in VB.NET. My form is a dialog and I've created an overload ShowDialog method, where I pass an Object into it ByRef.
The trouble is, I want to be able to refer to that Object throughout my dialog Class and not just in the ShowDialog method. For instance, some of my Events for controls on the form, need to reference that object.
I know I could create a local Private variable in the Class and assign it to the passed value, and then use that value. However I'm thinking this isn't very efficient because it would (I believe) create a new copy of the Object (which is a complex, large class in itself).

I am somewhat new to object oriented programming and am attempting to flatten a Linq object hierarchy by using a shim class.how to initalize a derived class with property values from a base class?I have two objects, a base object with about 100 properties, and a derived object which inherits from the base object and adds a few additional properties beyond those of the base object. My simple constructor creates the derived object, but I am looking for a way to initialize the derived object properties with values from the base object.Right now I am using reflection to iterate over the properties individually and I suspect there may be a better way. The following example shows my shim class constructor for the derived class, and two properties:
newProperty1 - a new string property of the derived class
flattenedProperty2 - a new string property of the derived class, copied from a 2nd-level object of the base class
Code example:
Public Class derivedObj
Inherits baseObj
Private _newProperty1 As String[code].......
Is this the correct constructor approach to flatten the object hierarchy using a shim class? My second question relates to initialization of properties in the derived class. The constructor above creates the derived object, but what is the best way to initialize the derived object properties with values from the base object? The following code uses reflection to iterate over the properties individually, but I suspect there may be a better way.
Code example:
' property names are in the string array fieldNames
'baseObjQuery is an ienumerable of baseObj
'derivedObjList is a list of derivedObj[code].....
Is there a simple way to initialize values for the properties in the derived object based upon the values of the common properties in the base object?

I created a VBA project in Excel. I would like to figure out how to transfer the data back in forth to make a more presentable and user-friendly program in VB Studio.Basically, I need my form in VB to input data to into an excel workbook.data, where the calculations are preformed. Then I need to copy the finished excel data cells workbook.results and paste them into an end result form in VB. I have tried looking at threads and cannot come up with a solution. There is no data saved each time the program runs, so I don't have a database.

I'm creating a gridview using an objectdatasource and it works fine when pulling all records. But when I want to use the selectCountMethod the grid shows no values. I Step through the code and my getInvoices (gets the requested data) returns data and the getInvoicesCount (gets the total record count). But then when I go through the rowdatabound of the gridview there's nothing in there and no data displays. Here is my code to set the objectdatasource. Any reasons why it wouldn't work or something special that needs to be done for getting the selectcount to work? [code]

I have the following line of Dim clients = From client In db.clients Select client Where client.ClientID = id
In debugging, the clients object populates perfectly, but how can get get data from the clients object? Like if the clients object has a FirstName property, how can I set a textboxes text property to that property from the clients object?
I thought it'd be something like:
tbClientFirstName.Text = clients.FirstName But that doesn't work.

I am trying to call a SetVariable command from an other form. For example, there is a movie ( called Movie ) on Form1, and a button on Form2. The button on Form2 needs to use a command like the following:
Call Movie.SetVariable("example variable", 1)
The above variable needs to be set to the movie on Form1, but I need the button to call it to be on Form2.

Version: visual basics 2008
Problem:
Form 1 contains a SWF object, which is called FlashGame (it has a movie set, which is a game)
Form 2 contains a button to set a variable on the FLashGame.
Example
Call FlashGame.SetVariable("variable will be here", 1)
That simple coding works when the button to call that SetVariable command is on the same form as the FlashGame, but I need them to be on different forms.
