I have a question about which technology is more efficient and easy to use oracle forms or .net . The database we use is oracle now we have to develope a new project insurance software (application) . I just want your opinion if .net would be more better to use for these kind of projects and if it has the same performance with oracle database as the oracle forms?

I have worked on .NET 2.0 technologies and now that I want start learning newer technologies, I am currently very confused on how to proceed.
New technologies I am considering consist of AJAX, Workflow, WCF and WPF
Here is my dilemma:
1. Where should I start first?
2. Which technology would allow me quicker understanding?
3. Is there any specific sequence to this learning?
I understand the questions might be stupid; however, this would help me concentrate on one instead of all over the place and archiving nothing.
I am an aid in a technology classroom at a middle school. They have 12 computers that must be logged into everyday. The teacher has given me the password to log in the computers for the students, because he doesn't want them to know it. The teacher's computer is linked to the other 12. I was wondering if it is possible to develop a program that has a list of the 12 computers with 2 fields, one for user name and password. These for each computer. You would enter the username and password and it would log in the computer. This would be done from the teacher's computer. It would make it a lot easier than having to go around and log in those computers. [URL]..
View 17 RepliesI am creating a dictionary software in Visual studio 2010 (vb). I've already done one in which i used SQL server express 2008 to hold the data. But users find it very annoying to download SQL server (of 58 MB) before installing the software.I am definitely not using SQL this time. But I don't know which database technology does not need a prerequisite software. I guess ADO.NET will not be favorable too. So can anybody suggest me which one to select this time, so that the users can use my software having just the .NET framework 4.0 and nothing else?

I then want to perform a bulk insert using microsofts Oracle.DataAccess (no choice in this) to an Oracle database. what would be the best way to perform this as there is no bulkImport like in SQLserver.

View 2 RepliesWe are using ClickOnce Technology to deploy our applications using In Place Hosting Manager.I install Ver 1.0.0.0 for an application XYZ. More upgrades happen and I install till Ver 1.0.0.7. At this point the minimum required version is set to Ver 1.0.0.5. But,now I want to move back to Ver 1.0.0.3.Will In Place Hosting Manager install Ver 1.0.0.3 though we don't change the minimum required version? My motive is to only change the location of deployment manifest and keep on jumping across versions(Up and Down).

I am communicating with a USB-HID device. It will successfully complete hundreds of send-receive requests but occasionally get a Null Exception error.

at the rxData.dataPacket(i) = element I will get a NullReference error every now and then. I could enclose it in a try/catch statement, but I'd like to fix the root problem if possible.This device is communicating to microcontrollers, and it is possible that they won't always give a value... but my feeling is this is some sort of UI threading issue. When debugging, even though there is a null exception, many times there actually does seem to be data in dataReceived.data.ToList(). Is there an easy way to place the whole data processing routine on a thread separate from the UI?Edit: Changed code to match answer and give more info on where it is used. Still get NullReferenceExceptions after about 1,000 completed send/receive requests to the HID device.

I am working on an application that will need to read tons of records (close to 500,000) from one table and insert them into another set of tables in the same database. I though about using SSIS package for this but our DBAs don't want to use that. Now, I am thinking of a multi-threaded approach. I am thinking that I can have a few thread started that will read say (500) records at a time and insert them, then come back and read more.
Now, say I spawn off 3 threads of this application. The first thread reads 500 rows and starts processing them. Can I lock these rows that were already read so that the next thread does not pick them up? I am trying to find some articles regarding this on the internet, but perhaps I am not searching for the correct terms in Google.
I'd like to sample the data from the Arduino @ roughly 200Hz. Is there a more efficient way to do this than using a timer (which is what I am currently using)? Currently I am using[code]....
View 3 Repliesif there is no need for my variable to store negative values, is it more efficient to use UInteger instead of Integer? both are 4bytes and i've got a feeling unsigned works faster though i'm nt sure about it. note that the range of my variable is 0 to 2147483647, hence i could use a UInt32 or Int32 and both would give me the same result so i'm wondering about optimum performance.

View 2 RepliesI have a program that must initialize a table that is usually about 10-15 thousand records. I have attempted several means to empty the records from it, but it always takes several minutes to accomplish the task or in some cases like a 'bindingsource.clear' command, doesn't work at all. I currently have it working using a simple loop to go through each record at a time and 'removecurrent'. but this seems extremely inefficient and it is quite slow.The real time consumer seems to come in with the tableadapter.update and tableadapter.fill that happens after the loop.[code]

Why is a VB programmer or VB code easily dismissed as too noobish and easy while the same does not apply to Python or Python code? After all, isn't Python as easy as VB is? And it does provide drag-n-drop GUI application building also. So why is it that VB is flamed and yet Python is not?

I'm running stored procedure from asp.net front-end but it's quite long. What is the easy way on running that thing in the background?
