Winforms - TextBox Validation In .NET And Windows Forms?
Mar 5, 2009
I'm using the following code to validate the text entered by user. It works perfectly fine. But I want to add the backspace feature so as to allow the user to delete the wrongly entered number.I have tried a couple of things and they worked but before last digit (after the decimal point) i.e. it does not allows to delete after the number has been completely entered.number is being entered in the format: 12313213.45
What shall I do?Private Sub TextBox5_KeyPress(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.KeyPressEventArgs) Handles TextBox5.KeyPress

My question is the last code tag section above where the parameters are set for the input.If on the form there is a textbox that is required (on the db side to not allow nulls) how would you perform the validation before you tried to execute the update sql?Ex: say 'SerialNumberTextbox.Text' was empty or if you needed to have character constraints on what was typed like varchar(15) and they have 16 or more characters

on my form i have 2 text boxes. One email the other password. Her eis my code
Private Sub btnLog_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnLog.Click
If String.IsNullOrEmpty(txtMail.Text) Then
'txtMail is empty
MessageBox.Show("Email is empty", "Error", MessageBoxButtons.OK, _
MessageBoxIcon.Error, MessageBoxDefaultButton.Button1)
[Code]...
How can i make this more efficient. So that txtMail checks for text first then @ then more text then .com or something? i,m sure you know what i mean.and textpassword is more then 2 or three chars?

I am new to visual basic. Below is my
Private Sub todayMonth_Validating(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.ComponentModel.CancelEventArgs) Handles todayMonth.Validating
Dim tb As TextBox = DirectCast(sender, TextBox)
If Convert.ToInt32(tb.Text) >= 1 And Convert.ToInt32(tb.Text) <= 12 Then
tb.Tag = True
[Code] .....
Actually, I wanted to validate the todayMonth textbox just to input number between 1 to 12. The problem comes out when I do this procedure : Lets say I input an interger 11 and it passes the validation and proceed to another textbox. Then I click back to the todayMonth textbox, it shows this error :
"Conversion from string "" to type 'Integer' is not valid."
I don't know why my value in the textbox is "null" or empty . I still saw the value 11 on the textbox.

I simply want to have a user enter a number, e.g., 3.5, into a textbox and then click a button to process it. If nothing or a char or string is entered, I want to inform them to enter the number and clear the box. From a suggestion somewhere it was said to simply use validating. I thought e.handled was correct by that doesn't show up as an option. It works if the input is a number. If not, the messagebox shows and closes on OK but I can't do anything else. Any click (even to 'X' the window) anywhere brings up the messagebox. This is basically what I've tried:
Private Sub txtKidsAnswer_Validating(ByVal
sender As Object, ByVal e As System.ComponentModel.CancelEventArgs) Handles txtOddsAnswer.Validating
If IsNumeric(txtKidsAnswer.Text)
[code]....

I am retrofitting unit testing into a fairly complex system designed and written by other developers in VB.net. I am trying to develop unit tests for the GUI forms using NUnit and the NUnit Forms extension. (I've been looking at c# examples that are fairly easy to port over if you have a solution but don't know VB syntax as long as it uses NUnit classes)
I will try and explain what I am doing but first a brief description of the program. It basically monitors server activity. You need to connect to a server via a modal form with IP and Port fields(amongst others). Once you have connected to a server other parts of the program unlock and become usable (such as configuration of the server).
Desired process: Load program > click connect button > modal connect form loads > enter details > click OK to connect > main form updates to logged-in state > other functionality
The problem is that I cannot test the functionality of the connect form and then the logged-in functionality of the program. I can test that it loads the modal connect form correctly; enters the details and clicks OK (all fine so-far) but it does not appear to logically progress the program. The modal form just closes again seemingly without running the connect code from the program back-end and I'm back at the main menu not logged in to anything.
I have a feeling that I've either missed something really obvious or that it's simply not doable in NUnit.I have trawled the internet in search of anything similar but the closest was another SO thread that was really generic. Without being able to actually test the logged-in version of the program, I'm at a major hurdle.Another issue is handling message boxes that don't have unique identifiers (e.g. "are you sure you want to exit?"); these also seem to be a major pain in the arse with NUnit (If it makes any difference, I'm running the tests as a stand-alone project using a reference to the executable file of the built project, not the actual source)

In C# Windows Forms, a user control's InitializeComponent is called from the form's/control's constructor. When I create same scenario in VB.NET I don't get a constructor, and I can't locate a place where InitializeComponent is called.I need to call my code between InitializeComponent and when the control's Load event is raised, preferably still in the control's constructor. How do I do this in VB.NET?

I have a Windows Forms app that, unfortunately, must make calls to controls from a second thread. I've been using the thread-safe pattern described on the [URL].. Which has worked great in the past.
The specific problem I am having now: I have a WebBrowser control and I'm attempting to invoke the WebBrowser.Navigate() method using this Thread-Safe pattern and as a result I am getting StackOverflow exceptions. Here is the Thread-Safe Navigate method I've written.

I have pairs of controls: immagebox + textbox = one pair.I want these to show up in a single column grid/tabular format.Each cell contains one image/text pair.I want this grid to scroll because the number of pairs is dynamic depending on a user selection.I suppose I will be adding these controls in code at runtime when the user makes his/her selection.

I have an WinForms app that requires Name/Address data in lots of places, so I decided it would be a good idea to create a User Control. So far, so good. My problem is this: Let's say that my UserControl presents 2 text boxes (txtFName and txtLName) and txtLName is mandatory. What I want to do is put the validation code, e.g.: Code:If txtLName.Text.Length = 0 ThenMessagebox.Show("Enter a last name")End If

Is it possible to force a combobox to run it's validation event without moving the focus out of the ComboBox?
I need the event (or an event) to trigger when an item is selected with the mouse or an entry is typed into the combo box. I tried using SelectedValueChanged and SelectedIndexChanged however, these events do not fire if the user types a value that does not exist in the list source. I know I can change the DropDownStyle to DropDownList however, I still want the users to be able to type entries in the combobox (with auto complete).

I am trying to add a line of text to a TextBox component in VB.net, but I cannot figure out for the life of me how to force a new line. Right now it just adds onto what I have already, and that is not good.I have tried copying the actual linebreaks, didn't work. I tried AppendText(), didn't work.

I can't seem to get input focus on a textbox when a tab page first comes up (I'm using Windows Forms, VB.NET 3.5). I have a textbox on a panel on a tab page, and I want the focus to be on the textbox when the tab page comes up. I want the user to be able to start typing immediately in the focused textbox without having to click on the textbox. I have tab stops set in the order I want and the textbox is the first tab stop. The tab stops work except that when the tab page comes up the focus is not on the textbox, i.e. the one that's first in the tab order.
In the Enter event handler of the tab page I call the Focus method of the text box, but it returns False and does nothing, no error messages. I know I can access the text box because at the same point in the code I can set the text of the text box.If it matters, the layout of the tab page is a little complicated:[URL]..I want to set the focus on TextBox1.
What's the best way to get the focus on the desired textbox? If setting focus is the best way, why is the textbox.Focus() method failing?

I am able to select a block of text from the Code Window and drop it onto my VB.NET apps TextBox and complete the text operation. However I am unable to drag and drop the altered text back to the VB Code window Via the DoDragDrop method.
If e.Button = MouseButtons.Left Then

The program then dynamically inserts a check boxes per subfolder within a seperate cell of a Table Layout Panel.I want to and a simple Click event to each checkbox control so that when a control is clicked, it counts all of the check boxes on the form that are checked.How do I go about adding the event handler to the checkboxes when they are created. I'm trying to count characters in a textbox, which includes newline characters and tabs. How do we know if the textbox contains only newline characters? ie or if the user types in one or more characters, then a bunch of "newline" characters (CR followed by LF) and then goes back and deletes the original one or more characters leaving only the leading "newline" characters. I don't want to count the characters in textbox only if new line exists..
If String.IsNullOrEmpty(TextBox1.Text) Then
Label5.Text = 0
Else
