- launch multiple exe command through Process.StartInfo

- don't want the external exe to hang my main UI thread

Printer Selection From Process.StartInfo?

May 4, 2009

I'm trying to write a VB.net utility that launches microsoft word and prints a document then closes the word window. My code works fine:

Dim MyProcess As New Process
MyProcess.StartInfo.CreateNoWindow = True
MyProcess.StartInfo.Verb = "print"

[code]....

The problem is I cannot for the life of me figure out a way to tell Microsoft Word which printer to send the document to. It always goes to the default printer which wont work as I need to be able to programmatically determine the printer to use.

Pass Parameters Using Process.startinfo.arguments?

I am running an exe program from VB (Visual Studio 2005). This exe program accepts 3 parameters.I am passing the first parameter as a string and the next 2 as parameters from the Sub. However, the exe program treats all of them as string. I tried to use "&" and "+" between arguments and got the same results.[code]...

VS 2008 : Process.StartInfo.Arguments With A Collection Of Files?

Sep 19, 2009

I need to pass a file's name as an argument and a switch to the executable I'm using.I'm doing it like this:

vb.net
proc.StartInfo.Arguments = "-z ""C: est.txt"""

I'll know where the files are that I need to grab, but I won't always know the exact names. So, I thought I could grab a collection of the files, store them in a variable, and then pass them as an argument.I tested it with one file like this:

vb.net
Dim File As New System.IO.FileInfo("C:...Desktop est.txt") Dim proc As New Process proc.StartInfo.WorkingDirectory = "..." proc.StartInfo.FileName = "....exe" proc.StartInfo.Arguments = "-z" & File & "additional arugments" proc.Start() proc.WaitForExit()

But, as you all may already know, I can't use the & operator with a string and FileInfo.Would I have to then convert the FileInfo to a string first and then pass it through?

VS 2010 Launching New Process & Detecting If That Process Has An Error Message

Nov 19, 2011

I am working on a small VB application that listens for commands sent from an Android app.

One of the functions is to extract an archive. I am familiar with how to listen for the unrar process to finish, so I can display a progressdialog on the phone while the extraction is happening, and clear it as soon as it's done.

BUT ... if there is an error/alert from WinRAR, WaitForExit() never gets called because WinRAR is still sitting there open until I click "OK" on the MsgBox.

For Example ... if you try to extract a file that is not actually an archive... an alert will pop up saying "No Archives Found", and basically everything is halted on the VB app and the Android app, and the Android app just sits on a progressdialog saying "extracting..." until you manually hit "OK" on the computer.

As you can imagine, this is a problem if the whole point of your app is to NOT have to go over to the computer.

So... I am wondering if there is something similar to WaitForExit() that will wait for an error and allow me to close out the alert and let the process end.

Here's my Sub for the UnRar command:

Private Sub UnRar(ByVal WorkingDirectory As String, ByVal filepath As String)
Dim objRegKey As RegistryKey
objRegKey = Registry.ClassesRoot.OpenSubKey("WinRARShellOpenCommand")

Command Line To Close Shell Process?

Mar 12, 2011

I've created a very basic WF Shell project which runs an EXE (xyz.exe) in the WF Shell project's Resource folder. I can get a command line working from the Shell to open the other EXE (xyz.exe). But, I can't get code to close the Shell project's other EXE (xyz.exe) once it is opened. The xyz.exe windows called by the Shell continues to stay open even if I pass a "close" command line to the Shell.

The following code (which Paul suggested in another posting) will not close the other (xyz.exe) EXE's running process (when called by the Shell). While the Shell seems to be able to return it's called subordinate EXE's (xyz.exe) ID, not sure how to use such an ID to close its process.

Imports System.Diagnostics
Module Module1
Dim resourceFolder As String = Application.StartupPath & "Resources"

Can't Save File Using A Command Line Program Using New Process

Oct 7, 2011

I have been trying to fix this and make this work for pretty much three days now. I already solved one problem being, I can't use the shell on one HDD and create another file onto a different drive other then the drive that the directory of the application is running in.

EX:

If I run a program that is on the C: drive and using a working directory that is on the C: drive, I can not create a file onto the F: drive.

I got this problem when I was just using Shell(Environ$("Comspec") & " /c then the command")

So I decided to use Process()

Dim p = New Process()
p.StartInfo.FileName = "F:Visual Basic ProjectsCode TestingCode TestinginDebugToolsMediaInfoMediaInfo.exe"

VS 2010 Can't Access Files Below Root When Using Process To Run A Command Line Program

Feb 4, 2011

I am trying to create a program that downloads audio files via FTP, converts the audio to mp2 if necessary and copies them to a certain directory for consumption by our automation system. (I am a radio station engineer.)I am using the open source converter FFMpeg to convert audio files to mp2. This is a command line exectuted program. Here is the command line that I use to execute the external program with the input and output audio files at the root level: cmd.exe /k ""C:New Folderffmpeg.exe" -i "C:Test.mp3" -y "C:Test.mp2"" This command line works correctly whether I am using Shell() or System.Diagnostics.Process (Process) to execute the external program. I am going the Process route so I can know when the conversion has finished.Now, I really don't want to use the root directory for this but when I go below root with this line using Process the external program will not execute:[code]Can anyone tell me why that line will not work with Process though it works as expected with Shell()? I can't figure out how to stop the external program to get some feedback as to what its problem is.

.net - Launching A Child Process And The Windows 7 Taskbar

Sep 30, 2010

We have an application that self-updates using a Laucher.exe process which copies down new App.exe and DLLs from a server then runs them in a separate process. This was all working very well until the arrival of the Windows 7 taskbar... Problem is in Windows 7, if the user pins the Launcher.exe to the task bar (by right-clicking the shortcut to Launcher.exe) then this happens... When you start the program the "pinned" taskbar icon momentarily gets focus while the launcher is running but then a totally separate new icon appears when App.exe is running. If the user then decides to right click the icon from the running App.exe and pin that to the taskbar, they bypass the application update part of the process.

Keep Shell Window Open When Launching A Process?

Sep 6, 2011

I would like to launch a command line exe I created. For now it's a test program that writes Hello World to the console. I can launch it, but the shell window it displays it in only stays for a split second.

I know I can add a line to my console mode program (readline). But I would like to control it from the process launch. I will be using console mode programs that I did not write myself, and many of them don't stall the output. I can't find the right properties and methods to control the default shell behavior!

Launching Executable File With Process Component In 2008?

I've been able to successfully open Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Excel, and Notepad; however, when I try opening various other executables the following exception gets thrown:

A first chance exception of type 'System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception' occurred in System.dll

I cannot figure out why some programs open just fine while others cause the above exception to be thrown.

Process.Start To Start An External Command Line Application

Aug 4, 2009

I'm using Process.Start to start an external command line application and using the StartInfo.Arguments method to send parameters to the application. I imagine I'll need to use a loop... but I can't figure out exactly how yet.I need to send anywhere from 1 - an infinite number of files names to this application. Each file has to be sent one after the other. So once the first one is done, I need to loop back around and past the second one.I can probably use the Directory.GetFiles method to get all of the files, but I don't know how to assign them.

Launching Multiple Files From Just One EXE Possible?

Nov 18, 2010

When I click a button to Shell something, instead of having to specify where the exe (or whatever file it might be) is, i was wondering if I could combine it with VB to make it something like this. Shell ("Internet Explorer.exe"). Also, have VB save the file so anywhere I take that single exe file i made with VB, the exe file I want to shell goes with me. So that way I can launch multiple files from just one exe file and not have any directories to worry about.

Multiple Monitors Launching?

May 15, 2010

I have a dual-monitor setup. When I launch the main program, I need to make sure that it always launches in "Screen 1". I have a button within the program that launches another fullscreen window and I need this to always launch in the next available screen (read: not covering the main program window)I am using the System.Windows.Forms.Screen class to try to accomplish this and have have had about 80% success. I can successfully test for multiple monitors (which enables the button). When they click it, I can get it to always launch in the second screen. The problem I'm encountering while testing is the main program is launching in Screen 2, so the second window covers it.

Here's what I'd like to accomplish ultimately: I would like to always launch my program in Maximized stated (and disable resizing,
minimizing/maximizing is ok, just not double-clicking titlebar to resize) in the primary monitor (where Taskbar is being displayed). Then, when the button within the program is pressed, it launches the new window in the NEXT available monitor in Maximized stated.

Command Line Program To End Before Moving Onto The Next Command In Loop?

Feb 4, 2011

I am using a CheckedListBox that is populated with Filenames (full path, i.e. C:TestTest.jpg)When I have the files that I want in the CheckedListBox I wish to click a Start Button which will process the list one at a time using an exe program that runs on the Command Line. There are arguments that need to pass to the command line as well as the file location in order for the program to process.I currently have it working but the issue is the loop finishes quickly and it is left up to the CMD.exe to finish the process. What I would like is for the LOOP to wait until each file completes processing before passing the command for the next file in the CheckedListBox.There some reasons I wish for it to work this way.

1) I would like to have a button that can Pause/Restart the Loop.

2) I would like to have a button that can Stop the Loop so the whole process can end.

3) I would like to have the Loop remove each file one by one from the CheckedListBox after it has been processed.

4) I would like to display a Message once all the files have been processed.

5) And if it were possible I would like to report the status either by text or a progress bar showing where it is at in the process.

6) And the ability to add some error handling if possible.

Since the Loop finishes so quickly as it just passes the command to the command line using the & as a seperator it is the command line that is handling the rest of the process. Because of this there is not control over it in the GUI.The code I am using allows the Command Line text to display in the Form so it won't open up a seperate window to run CMD.exe. This is the desired affect as I would like everything to appear to run from within the Form itself.

How To Open Multiple Files Using "open With" Command Line Arguments

May 15, 2012

I have an application that can read certain types of files, and I have it working so that if you do "open with" from windows, it automatically starts the application and opens the selected file.

Unfortnately, I cannot get it to work for more than one file.

System.Environment.GetCommandLineArgs() contrains the following:
System.Environment.GetCommandLineArgs(0) = name and path to the .exe
System.Environment.GetCommandLineArgs(1) = name and path to the first file selected to be opened

System.Environment.GetCommandLineArgs().Length is 2 when the user tries to open 1 file, which makes sense since the first argument is the .exe itself and the 2nd is the path to the file, but it does not increase to 3 if the user tries to open 2 files... meaning that System.Environment.GetCommandLineArgs(2) is never populated Here is some sample code that shows the problem: It will recognize no files or 1 file being opened, but if you try to open multiple it will only show the first.

.NET - Pass Command On Command Line?

May 29, 2012

I am struggling to pass a parameter to a VB.NET application via a Windows scheduled task. It works perfectly in Visual Studio (passing a command line arguement via project properties).If I am calling a VB6 application, then I will supply the following parameters and it works:

Run: c:progra~1TestTest.exe TestParameter Start In: c:progra~1Test However, if I supply the same parameters in VB.NET, the program throws an exception when it tries to create an instance of a class in the Form.Load: System.NullReferenceException cannot create instance of object.

I have also tried the following:Run: c:program filesTestTest.exe TestParameter Start In: "c:program filesTest" This time the status of the scheduled task changes to "cannot start".What is the correct way to specify command line parameters in a scheduled task for a VB.NET program?UPDATE I found the solution on this web page:[URL}.. I am still confused as to why the program would not create an instance of an object when I used the 8 bit paths (i.e. progra~1)

VS 2010 Starting A Process With A Command?

Dec 15, 2011

I want to launch System Restore through my program. I figured out the destination of this feature in Win7 is: WindowsSystem32control.exe sysdm.cpl @0,4

So I wrote this

Dim p As New System.Diagnostics.Process
Private Sub CreateASystemRestorePointToolStripMenuItem_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles

[Code]....

Problem is that it will not work if I have anything behind .exe And "sysdm.cpl @0,4" is vital for this to work, otherwise I just launch Control Panel, which is pretty useless for what I want to achieve.

So how do I include commands like those in Visual Basic?
