.Net Asynchronous Delegate Abortion - Call Selenium Command Doesn't Return The Response From The RC Server

Jun 4, 2012

Background: My application is used to execute tests using Selenium RC servers, and occasionally I'm running into a problem when my call to a Selenium command doesn't return the response from the RC server - it then ends up blocking the thread that is executing the test.

VS 2005 - Return Value From Asynchronous Web Service Call

Aug 13, 2009

I'm using ASMX web services in VB.Net in VS 2005. I am calling a function method on the web service that returns a true or false value. This works fine if I call the the web method synchronously, but if I want to call the method asynchronously, the function returns to a sub and there is no return value; therefore, I can't tell whether the result of call is true or false. Is there a way to make an asynchronous call and still get the true or false result (perhaps using the userState Object)?

For Example:
Dim MyResult as Boolean = MyService.GetResult(10)
Dim MyResult as Boolean = MyServer.GetResultAsync(10)
This doesn't work the compiler complains: "Expression Does Not Produce a Value"

Make An Asynchronous Call To A Method?

Jun 16, 2010

I need to make an asynchronous call to a method which for the sake of simplicity counts from 1 to 100. If an exception is thrown during the methods counting process, lets say at 50 I need to stop the methods execution, dispose of a few objects and restart it at 51 but have no idea how to go about it.I basically need to raise an event from the method to the main thread and restart the asynchrounous method.

Abort An Asynchronous Method Call After Timeout?

Oct 6, 2010

VB.NET 2010, .NET 4/I have a System.Timers.Timer object that does some work on its elapsed event:

Private Sub MasterTimer_Elapsed(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Timers.ElapsedEventArgs) Handles MasterTimer.Elapsed
MasterTimer.Enabled = False
'...work...
MasterTimer.Enabled = True
End Sub

My problem is that the work that it's doing sometimes gets stuck. Part of the work is serial communication so it might be getting stuck waiting for a response from something. I've already modified my serial communication code a bit to hopefully solve the problem. However, this timer is basically the heartbeat of a production control application and it is very bad if it were to stop for any reason. I was thinking that it might be nice to put in a fail-safe timeout so that, if the "work" is taking too long, the timer could re-enable itself and try again. I was thinking of something like this:Move the work into a subroutine and create a delegate:

Private Delegate Sub WorkDelegate()
Private Sub Work()
'...work...
End Sub

Call the work by invoking the delegate and then use WaitOne(timeout) on the IAsyncResult to specify a timeout:

Private Sub MasterTimer_Elapsed(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Timers.ElapsedEventArgs) Handles MasterTimer.Elapsed
MasterTimer.Enabled = False
Dim workDel as New WorkDelegate(AddressOf Work)

[code]....

In that it would re-enter a subroutine that is already running? Is there a way to abort Work() if it hasn't finished after the timeout? In other words, just cease execution of Work() if result.IsCompleted Is False after WaitOne?

Make A Very Simple Asynchronous Method Call In Program?

May 1, 2012

I just have a simple vb.net website that need to call a Sub that performs a very long task that works with syncing up some directories in the filesystem (details not important).

When I call the method, it eventually times out on the website waiting for the sub routine to complete. However, even though the website times out, the routine eventually completes it's task and all the directories end up as they should.

I want to just prevent the timeout so I'd like to just call the Sub asynchronously. I do not need (or even want) and callback/confirmation that it ran successfully.[code]...

Call A Delegate From Separate Thread?

So, I'm having troubles implementing a separate thread. This is because I have a simple class, and in it I start a new thread. So, as it is not any form, I haven't found any way to make it call the function in the UI Thread.

So, I cannot use the Invoke method. Is there any way to call a function from another thread?

.net - Call Winforms-style Invoke/Delegate From MVVM?

Oct 12, 2010

I'm hacking away at some code which seems to have been started, at least in theory, as an MVVM project in Expression Blend, by my predecessor at this company.

I've got a thread running in the background, which is running some operations on items as they happen. In order to prevent any clashes, I've also got that thread running any operations my users call for.

Once those operations are completed, I'd like to bring up a MessageBox to give a summary of the user-initiated operations, but now that they're running off in their own thread, the finishedProcessing event handler is now running on the background thread instead of the interface thread and it's causing my MessageBoxes to appear non-modally.

Back in the WinForms days, I'd have handled that using InvokeRequired, Invoke and a Delegate. I've read that this has been replaced by something called "Dispatcher", but the ViewModel class I'm using doesn't seem to have a Dispatcher object.

The "thisViewModel" class I'm using inherits a class called "WorkspaceViewModel", which inherits "ViewModelBase", both of which look generated to me...

where I can link up to this "Dispatcher" from here?

Sockets Command-response Timeout?

Jul 1, 2010

provide an example of a client server app using the System.Net.Sockets class that:

(a) supports multiple client connections

(b) that implements some sort of command-response timeout feature (by that I mean, once a client connects the server sends the client a message [e.g. Message A] and waits without blocking communication with other clients for a response. If a response is not received within a defined period it tries again perhaps and if there is still no response then it disconnects the client. If a response is received then it sends another message [e.g. Message B] and so on....Whilst this is going on the server must be able to accept connections from other clients).

If anybody has done something like this before and is willing to share their knowledge I'd be grateful. I've been trying for ages to get the timeout feature working correctly to no avail. I haven't posted what I have already because frankly it's a mess. I tried an ArrayList of timers (one for each client) that I started and stopped as messages were sent and received, but the timer elapsed event kept firing after I thought it should have stopped which may have something to do with the various threads involved with the asychronous communication I was trying to use (I really dont know).

It's really the server end that I'm having problems with because the client app only has to deal with messages coming from a single source. At this stage I don't care if it's done using synchronous or asychronous communication. I've trawled the web for every example I can find and but I can't find one that implements this kind of command-response timeout with multiple clients - i.e. most of them just show how to listen out (server) and connect (client) and how to send a message, i.e. there's no sequence of messages or timeouts.

.Net Properly Shutdown An Asynchronous Socket Server Running On A Background Worker?

Mar 21, 2012

I have a Class called SocketSvr which handles an asynchronous socket server. It is called via the BackgroundWorker from my main form. Basically, I just want it to display my socket data information inside a textbox in the main form, and have a server start/stop button available on the main form to do those things.

Here is the code from Form1.vb:

Public Class Form1
Dim WithEvents Socketsvr As New SocketSvr
Private Sub ToggleServerButton_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, _

[code]....

I am uncertain how to properly shut down requests from the client when the StopServer() function is run. In the code above, I place a cancellation queue for the background process. The funny thing is that once StopServer() is run, it will accept one more connection, then stop accepting thereafter.If I remove the following line from the code above:

listener.SetSocketOption(SocketOptionLevel.Socket, SocketOptionName.ReuseAddress, 1)

-- it crashes when I attempt to start the server a second time (complaining that I cannot reuse the socket, obviously) My guess is that I need to add something to the bw.CancellationPending call on the background worker?

Using A Web Browser To Send A Gmail Message And Have A Home Pc Return A Email In Response

Apr 6, 2012

ok here is my problem, im making a little app for school since our school blocks pretty much everything so here is my plan a student makes 2 gmail accounts one for school one at home.

in the program at school (client) they put a site request into a textbox and they hit send, the request is then sent to the home pc gmail account and another app on the other side downloads the full site that they have requested and then sends them an email back with an attachment of the complete website, it is then opened in a browser and they have the site, simple idea and it would be easy except.

my school blocks the smtp protocols in vb, even outlook cant use gmail accounts only the schools registered email, however, you can access gmail on the internet without any blockages and you can send and recieve on the gmail website.so how can i use a webbrowser control to log the user into there gmail account through a custom gui, and send a string like www.facebook.com to the home pc gmail account, and then use the web browser controll on the students laptop to recieve the response email through a web browser, is there some kind of gmail api i can use?

Multicast Delegate: Represents A Multicast Delegate; That Is, A Delegate That Can Have More Than One Element In Its Invocation List?

from the documentation we have this: Multicast Delegate: Represents a multicast delegate; that is, a delegate that can have more than one element in its invocation list.

so am i right to say that Multicast delegate is no different from a normal delegate other than the fact that it has arguments. so System.Action is a 'normal' delegate whereas System.Action(T)(Byval obj as T) is a multicast delegate?
