In a DataTable object, is there added overhead to looking up a column value by name thisRow("ColumnA") rather than by the column index thisRow(0)? In which scenarios might this be an issue. I work on a team that has lots of experience writing VB6 code and I noticed that didn't do column lookups by name for DataTable objects or data grids. Even in .NET code, we use a set of integer constants to reference column names in these types of objects. I asked our team lead why this was so, and he mentioned that in VB6, there was a lot of overhead in looking up data by column name rather than by index. Is this still true for .NET?

I need to sort a datatable. I do it with linq this an example
Dim query = From c In dt.AsEnumerable _
Order By c.Field(Of DateTime?)("LastPurchaseDate"), _
c.Field(Of String)("LastName") Descending
Dim dv As DataView = query.AsDataView
But my problem is that i need to sort the fields not by passing the name of the column but the index of that.

I want to loop through a databale and change the values of a specific column in that datatable.eg: the database returns Request_ID, Desc, Date and Status_Ind. The Status_Ind column contains integer values. I dont want to show the integer values to the user. I want to convert that to a string value based on the integer values returned in that columns.

I developed a windows forms app, using VisualBasic in VS 2010. In my form, first I declared a variable as DataTable (Dim VarTable as New DataTable).
Second, changed the DataSource property of my DataGridView (DataGridView1.Datasource=VarTable)
Third, I filled the VarTable in this way: using a resulset from SqlDataReader, i added row by row.
Dim Result As SqlDataReader=CommandSQL.ExecuteReader
Do While Result.Read()
Dim RowToAdd As DataRow
RowToAdd=VarTable.NewRow()
RowToAdd("Code")=Result("Code")
RowToAdd("Name")=Result("Name")
VarTable.Rows.Add(RowToAdd)
Loop
Fourth, after the user changed data in datagridview, I saved the data back to SQL, cleared VarTable (VarTable.Rows.Clear()), and back to top of form to accept a new code. But here, problems begin. When I execute again the whole code described, the datagridview dont show the entire rows, and sometimes crashed with different errors. Solution? Dont fill VarTable row by row. Use VarTable.Load(Result) to populate the VarTable. I don't know why now works, But just I wanted to share this information.

I have a datatable with 10 records linked to a datagridview. When I initially load the datagridview, row 0 in the datagridview = row 0 in the datatable - based purely on the order they load, and the datatable's default sort order. I then filter my datagridview and am left with 5 records. Is there a way of determining programatically, the actual datatable row number of a row displayed in a datagridview, considering that row 0 in the datagridview is now not necessarily row 0 in the datatable?

Is there a way to find the column index of a datagridview column using the columns DataPropertyName?I currently use a loop (shown below in the class) which is kind of ugly, but it works. I'd like to do something like this, which seems more elegant.My goal is this, I store the users DataGridView column settings (i.e. DisplayIndex, Visible, & Width).When the user opens the form that contains the datagridview I want to get those settings from the database and apply the settings to the datagridview.[code]

In previous versions (VB.NET 2003) I would do
datagrid.datasource = dataset.tables(0)
datagrid.datamember = "Column1" 'Where this is the name of the column
This would show me just that column in the grid regardless of the number of columns in the dataset.
In VB.NET 2008 I do: datagridview1.datasource = dataset.tables(0)
I see all the columns.I then add:
datagridview1.datamember = "Column1" 'Where Column1 is the column name
I then have an empty grid.How does one get only a single column to show in the grid from a multi-column data source? I am using internal code to populate the datasets and tables.

I have two database tables in SQL Server Express 2008 with the following layouts.
DATA
-------
id
fundKey
amount
fiscalYear
FUNDS
-------
fundKey
fundDescription[code]....
These two tables are related on fiscalYear and fundKey. So if you were to look at the first line in the DATA table you would get:
1,General,2700,2008
I'm trying to create a front-end for this using VB2008. I thought a DataGridView (DGV) would work well for this. So I create a small app to test out my theory. I put a DGV on it and setup a data source to the DATA table using the designer and it works great. Then I change the fundKey column to be databound to the FUNDS column, looking up the fundDescription based on the fundKey. I also change it to a combobox column because in the future I would like other users to easily change the value. And all of this works well.My problem is in that combobox column, all the fund values are listed as options.So it lists: General, Indirect, General, Sponsored. I would like it to list only the values for the appropriate fiscal year. So if that row is for fiscalYear 2008, the fund options should be General and Indirect. And if it's 2009 the options should be General and Sponsored.What is the best way to do this? I thought about setting up views on the SQL Server side and having two datasets in the app and switching between them.

I have a DataGridView containing a large number of columns. I want the users to be able to select multiple columns and then select a menu item to hide the selected columns. For example a user might selected columns 5 through 10 and I want the program to hide those columns. I know how to hide columns, one at a time. I can get the count of selected columns but I have not figured out how to get the index to the left-most selected column. Trial and error is such a slow process.
Considering the huge number of options offered by the DataGridView tool, it would be nice if this forum had a special category for the DataGridView (common to VB and C#).
Finally I got the desired results but it took a lot of coding, looping through the selected cells to find the one with the lowest column index, then a second loop to count previously-hidden columns, then a third loop for hiding the selected columns, stepping past previously-hidden columns and declining to hide frozen columns.

I have a datagridview with a datasource from a MySQL query. Works fine. However, I want to add an extra column and generate some data into the cells. This works fine too and shows up as intended. However, I cannot sort on that extra column and the contents of the cells in the column are cleared out if I sort on the other colums. I realize this is all because of the original datasource, but Im hoping there is a way to "connect" the extra column in somehow?
Grid_SearcherResults.DataSource = dbconnection.bSource
Grid_SearcherResults.Columns.Add("Location", "Location")
'Then some code to set the value of the cells in the new column.. etc

DataGridView8.Sort(DataGridView8.Columns(0), ListSortDirection.Ascending)
However, I want to use the name of the column and extract the index number in the first parameter of the Sort method. However this fails:
DataGridView8.Sort(DataGridView8.Columns("Date").Index, ListSortDirection.Ascending)

'...
Dim strSQL as String = "SELECT col1,col2,col3 FROM myTable"
'....
myda.Fill(myDtb)
myDGV.DataSource = myDtb.
'The above code fills the DGV with data from the underlying query

'Supposing that I want to add an unbound Column to the end of the DGV which appears together with the data returned by the query, is it possibe?

I'm retooling an app, and condensing my queries down to one, but to do so, I would like to move the columns for better presentation. I am reporting on errors for particlular equipment, and the user may want to get equipment by errors or errors by equipment. Is there any way to change column order?

I searched for this topic and all the examples are in C# (and they have errors as they will not convert with a C# to VB converter). I am using VB.net 2005 and would like a sample that work for it. I have a loop that goes thru the DataGridView and changes the row color based on a column/cell value from the binded DataTable (shown below). I'd like to add to the loop (where the comment is) and also hide the button for this cell and let the "In Process" show in the cell instead.
Private Sub ColorInProcessItems()
' Color the rows green if they are In Process, red if they are Complete
For Each row As DataGridViewRow In dgvQueue.Rows
[code]....

This is something that's been bugging me for a while. Say I have a dgv with several columns and rows of data. Many times while working with the grid, it's necessary to know the number of the column, but all you know is the column header name, or vice versa. Is there any internal command that will return these values, or is there at least a better solution to the problem than making a function that loops through every header name until you find the one you want? It just seems so inefficient.
