I would be grateful with some help with reading a text file into a Richtext box. The code I have at present appends the first line of text as I want it but the rest of the lines of text do not alter. Before I call him out on it, I'd like to confirm whether this line actually sets a megabyte (or two megabytes in Unicode?) of memory aside for that one stringbuilder?
Would the world of strings be better if stringbuilder had IndexOf?

There is a label control on .aspx The text "hello" comes from database i.e. label1.text = "hello" Note that, I do not have permission to change the UI code.
I would like to alter the value of the field in the table to show the text as bold i.e. <strong>
To have the text displayed as highlighted i.e. bold, I manually modified the text inside the field of the table to show
<strong>hello</strong>
Is this ok? It does not seem to work because in the label control I see: <strong>hello</strong>
Mistakingly I have deployed an application on 20 laptops and discovered that one of the columns text size to 2 characters to small. How can I check and set this in code? If I can do it this way I don't need to get all the databases back and do it manually.

View 2 RepliesI created an application that when a user logs onto their Windows account, a Form is displayed outlining the current Computer Usage policy set by the insitution and gives the user two options either Agree or Dis-Agree. The two options are in the form of buttons, with events that depending on what the user clicked, will create a log text file at a specified location, with enteries of Date,Time,CurrentUser, and if they agreed or disagreed. If they agreed the application after creating/amending the file will then terminate, otherwise it will update the file and then force Windows to logoff the current user.
Now I made a shortcut of the .exe of the application and placed it in the startup for all users, and yes the application loads at startup for all the users following the procedures mentioned above. The problem I am facing is, that if the current user logs off, or is forced to log off, and another user logs onto Windows, goes through the whole ordeal mentioned above, the application is denied access to the logfile that was created under the previous user, and thus crashes.
So my question is, how can I created a text file using vb 2008 application, that is accessible by multiple Windows users. I have even tried changing the location of the created file to the shared folder, but the end result is the same.
I am trying to loop through a directory and for ever text file that I find, convert the encoding to UTF-8 Fromat.

Show the event of the loop on a textbox or label until a button is pressed
The loop will then stop on any number that happened to be at the loop event and when a button is pressed again the loop will continue.

I'm able to read the text file but my label will only loop if I hit the start button. It goes to the next line, but I want it to continue to loop through the entire file until I hit a button telling it to stop.

View 5 RepliesI have a project for school where I am to create some form of security for an application, our brief was to basically to create and hide a text file in the applications program files (not all that secure really, but heh I don't write the briefs) So I have created the code and form to check that a users security key is valid it all works perfectly in the debugger, it writes the file to the specified directory, however when I run the application on a computer (after deploying it with the correct directories being set up, it never creates the .txt file to write the information created during "Authentication" - I am really confused and I am not sure if this is part of the "problem" I am supposed to be solving for school, or whether this is just some crazy exception that has been thrown up

The program is falling over when trying to execute the update commands during the datareader loop, with the fabled 'There is already an open DataReader associated with this Command...' error. This program has evolved as I've found problems/better ways of working, so it might be a case of myself just not using the DataAdapter right - I'm guessing I should be using a function of the open DataReader rather than the ExecuteNonQuery command.

View 4 RepliesI am using VB2005 and trying to put an application together.What it needs to do is retrieve information from a binary file, possibly alter that information, and put it back into a new file.The file is a .wav file with data appened to the end. There is an additional section at the end of the .wav file which stores xml data.I have found that if I open this in a hex editor and make a 1:1 swap on any of the bytes that the application that the file is for can still read the XML.If I tried to add or remove characters from the XML then it would not read. I located a header byte and incremented it to resolve this.
This worked as an excellent bandage to do conversions where the data always needed to be changed to the same thing.What I have been asked to do is build logic that allows for different things to happen depending upon what data is contained within the file.The method that I am currently trying to impliment is:
Read through the file with a system.io.binaryreader
Searche for a bytestream that will signal data is coming
For example:

If I proceed with this method, I will have to read the file one time to gather the information and then a second time to write it all out with the header modified for length.This is my first experiene with working with binary files in this way.Also,I've been experiementing with building a string and slapping it back in at the end using the binarywriter.write(string) method.I noticed that it was putting in header characters before the string.These seem to change if I change the length of the string.At one point it was d0 07. Later it became e7 07. Does anyone know of a way to prevent this header from being inserted?
I tried a for each loop to grab all of the characters from the string, convert them to a byte array and deposit the byte array into the file, but the header remained the same. When I write the byte array generated from a system.io.binaryreader I do not get this header.
Is there any tool I can use to create a report from a pipe-delimited file? This report will need to have multiple fonts on the same line and be "programmable". I need to be able to loop through a section to output detail data to the report, keeping track of how many records are output.
