Lets say I have a basic application with only one text Box inside the application.I need to know how I can edit that text box remotely via a simple XML file on a server so the end users will be able to see the edited texts in th etext box inside of application?
View 5 RepliesI was thinking about making a program, that could edit java files. (That contains files, like a java folder) Let's say there is a java "folder" named "javafolder.jar", and inside i have placed a few files and folders. And now i want this program to delete/edit a specific file or folder inside, or place files inside with the program.
View 1 RepliesI just started using VB2010, but I've ran into some problems. I want to make a program that modifies a .jar file. I want to add content to it using a button. But I think that it's really hard to do that, because I don't know about opening file and adding files to it, then closing it quickly again.

I have a need to do some extensive editing on some SGML files. SGML is, of course, just tagged ASCII files. But, I need to convert that SGML to nice, neat MS Word files, with paragraph styles. I need to do extensive searching and replacing. VBA does not have the necesary regular expression support, so, I need to use VB.Net. But, I'm at a loss to do the most basic thing. I just need to know how I can open a Word file in VB.Net.
View 5 RepliesI have a pretty simple question I was hoping someone could help me with, there are two text files - first is [code]...
View 14 RepliesI have is my columns are separated by spaces but these spaces can vary between 1 space and 20 spaces. So would it be possible to replace all spaces with one space? This will mean that each column is seperated by one space and I can then start working on my next bit of coding with deleting columns.
View 30 RepliesI have two text files. The fields in each text file are separated by a space (" "). Some of the fields in column 1 of file 1 match the fields in column 1 of file 2. However the third column in file 2 is a numeric field. What I wish to do is check every field in file1 against the field in file 2, and if the number is 1 then remove the row from file 2, if the number is > 1, then subtract one from it.
I have the following coding so far.
Dim lines1 As New List(Of String)(IO.File.ReadAllLines("File1"))
Dim lines2 As New List(Of String)(IO.File.ReadAllLines("File2"))
Dim values As New Dictionary(Of String, Integer)()

I have a text document that stores around 200 commands ,each on its own line with a value of either 0 or 1 after them. This determins if that command is ON or OFF.

Looking for unique term 'END' in file - want to delete the term as I will append text later in the routine and append a the same unique term 'END' later in the same routine. Here another poster's code to find the term:

I am new here and just started visual basic 2008. I want to load a BIG file to edit the text. It is 24MB So whenever I load it in the richtextbox it shows : 7@
:/ Regular text files load fine.
Here is the
CommonDialog1Open.Filter = ("EXE [*.exe*]|*.exe|All Files [*.*]|*.*")
CommonDialog1Open.ShowDialog()
rt1.Text = (My.Computer.FileSystem.ReadAllText(CommonDialog1Open.FileName))
I know I am trying to load .exe! It will load if I save it through the program but will only show 7@.
I have a gridview that contains value of every rows read from a text file. What I want to do is, edit and delete the selected row on the gridview. I already have the code to show every row on the textfile:

What I am going to ask is, how do I get the index of selected row return and fill the value to the textbox then update it to the textfile?
Ok so i have a uni assignment to delete lines of text out of a text file, so far i have figured out how to search the text file for specific bits of text, i,e name of user, ive also used a loop to find out what line in the text file the specific line exists as...my
code so far is
Dim line As String
Dim Input As StreamReader
[code]....
the selected policy is what im tryin to use to write over the line of texts that already exists however i think that maybe instead of deleteting what exists it will just move it down a line and make a blank line
I am trying to make the code edit the a line in a text file, but it ends up deleting all the text and add the line at the begging of the file.
Dim FILE_NAME As String = "config.conf"
Dim i As String
Dim Text(90) As String
[Code].....
I found this code on here to open a text fille, do a find & replace then save the changes, and the code is in a loop that will do that to every file in a given folder. My question is I also have files in sub folders, and more sub folders, and i'm not sure how deep it goes. I want to recursivly go though all the sub folders and do this to all the files, not just the files directly in the main folder.
Here is the code so far:
Code:
FolderBrowserDialog1.Description = "Select Path for files to edit"
FolderBrowserDialog1.ShowDialog
OpenPathVariable = FolderBrowserDialog1.SelectedPath

I have a text file pwd.txt comma delimited, I added in project resources, now i want to read,edit and insert in text file.

View 4 RepliesAnyway, I'm a teacher and am writing a program that simply shows kids a word on a flashcard. There are 2 buttons, 1 to read the word and 1 to go to a new work. There are going to be 300 words. Really I'm just testing it right here. What I want to know is should I be inputting all the words right into the code like I did with "hi" and "not 1" (Don't ask. those are just the 2 random words I picked to test this out with). OR is there a better way (maybe somehow to type all the words on a text file and have the program randomly pull one of them (I don't know how to do this).
Here is the code so far:
Public Class Form1
Dim word
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click

I have a program where a lot of the required information for it is stored in text files. I simply read this information into large arrays. However, I don't think it's necessary to load all the information each time. Rather, it would be more efficient if I could simply search through a list of items to find the one I need and then use the data from it, or to find a similar name and use it elsewhere.
Would I be right in using a database? And is database programming done in SQL? I have a book on it telling me to use the SQL Server (IIRC), so I shouldn't be doing it in the VB.NET Express GUI?
Here's an example of what I would do:
Hex = 03 00 => dex number 003
Search in file Pokemon Dex Numbers
003 returns Bulbasaur
Check Bulbasaur base stats in the base stats file
etc
So basically I'm reusing a lot of information. I think a database would be best and it would all be internal right? I'm getting complaints about access denied to a text file (since it's stored in the program directory in the program files).
So to cap up the few questions I have:
-Databases are done in SQL and not inside the GUI?
-Databases would load internally?
-I could search a database without having to load it into like an array or something?
I have this Quiz software that lets you create online multiple choice quizzes which are great for studying (I am in grad school and I'm trying to use everything I can to learn). So the Quiz software is great but it only lets you input questions by hand, one by one. I took a look at the .xml file that the quiz program spits out and came up with the idea to try and make a converter so that I can import many questions at once. I was hoping to try and solve this limitation by doing the following:
Take a .doc that say a tutor gives us with a bunch of practice questions, and then take that into Crimson Editor, and then format it so the question is on line 1, the multiple choice answers are on lines 3,4,5, and 6, (for the next question, the question would be on line 11, and the answers on lines 13, 14, 15, and 16, and so on) and then take that saved .txt file into my program, hit the generate button, and it will spit out the .xml file, and then import that into the quiz software to generate the online quiz.
Here is an attached screenshot of my program layout so far:
I figured out how to open a text file by watching simple youtube tutorials, but I don't know how to have it generate the stuff and have it show up in the bottom text box. I know how to do the coding to convert the txt to proper xml code but I don't know how to be able to save the contents of the bottom text window to an xml file.

View 6 RepliesWrite a program that requests a color as input in a text box and then determines whether or not the color is in the text file. The program should use the Boolean-valued Function procedure IsCrayola that returns the value True if the color in the text box is a Crayola color.
*I am to use a file named Colors.txt

View 14 RepliesI am writing a program that will need to edit an XML file and replace it with new data. I currently have working code using XMLWriter functions, but the problem is that it rewrites the whole file, deleting anything it didn't write that time around. I am assuming I either need to use a different function in XMLWriter or use a different method than XMLWriter.[code]...

View 11 RepliesI have a combobox (combobox1) with a list of countries, Canada, USA, UK as an example. For each country I have a textfile of cities. I choose a country, which populates combobox2 .i.e. I select Canada from combobox1. Combobox2 shows cities for Canada. I also have a button 'Edit Cities' What I want to accomplish is the following:Open some type of text editor (like notepad) and allow the user to either delete or add items to the list of cities then re-save the file back to the resources folder of my program. I have been successful in reading the textfile to a messagebox but of course can't do anything with it.
Here is a code snipet I have so far:
Private Sub btnEdit_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnEdit.Click
If combobox1.SelectedIndex = 0 Then
Dim fileReader As String
