Jan 23, 2009I'd Like to know how to make a free text search function, If you don't Know what i mean by "Free Text Search" then here is an example:
Lets say i want to search for the string "ong" in a Combobox(In the list ofc)
And we have the following Listitems:
Tim Carlson
Bob Hanks

Jennifer Sanfre
Jimmy Wong

Then Both Julie and Jimmy Should apper in the combobox list.

Sep 23, 2009have build some code which goes through the datasource finding records on what a user types, basically if the user types 'P' in the combobox it finds all records from FieldName with 'P' and if you type 'Portugal' it finds all records from the FieldName with 'Portugal, it all narrows down the search list say if there are to entries which match 'Portugal' the combox would only have to items in. The problem i am have is that when i bound the datasource back to the combobox every letter you type stays at Postion 0 of the combobox and doesn't move to the end of the letter as normally the combo works, does any one now how to get arround this problem.
At the moment i call my combobox search code from the keypress event of the combobox.This code works fine with recordsets in msaccess combobox but i cannot get it to work with the datasource of the combobox in vb.net Heres the code from the combobox keypress event:

Aug 3, 2009Regarding multi column search, i want to clear you the situation where one column contains say FirstName and the another column contains LastName for the 'Contacts Combo box', then when user types either FirstName or LastName for the person, combo box should search for the appropriate value into both columns.

DropdownList At Properties Level Of ComboBox - Search Field Types
Oct 28, 2009I have a combo box on my application (working with VB.net) called CmbAttendantstatus. I have sent the dropdownstyle = dropdownlist at the Properties level of the combobox.
There are 200 field types e.g;
Current Attendant
Ever Attendant
Never Attendant etc
The issue is I can only select one from the list, fine, but I want to be able to type the first letter on the combobox and it takes me to the nearest field type rather than looking through the entire drop list. For example I want Never Attendant, I just need to type N and the drop list takes me to anything starting from N and if I add E for example any field starting with NE shows up for selection. Presently, when the dropdownlist is selected you are not allowed to type anything...

2. Is there anyway to make the textbox 'read only'? The textbox is populated by application itself, with some logs.. The only reason I chose textbox was because, I can't select an item and copy it from label..

How can I search for a data in listview from fist form using my second form?For example, I entered 7 entries to my listview, and when I press "Search in listview" button, the second form will open.(My first form contains the listview table and a button named "Search in listview", while the second form contains a textbox which I'll type what I want to search,for example the ID Number, and a button named "Search".)To shorten my code, I like to use from the System.IO Namespace.Is it possible to use System.IO? How? It is frustrating that I can't even find it in Google.

Mar 28, 2011Here's the situation: I've got a form that has
- RichTextBox
- OpenButton (to load RTF file)
- SaveButton (to save RTF file after editing)
- Textbox (for search phrase)
- SearchButton
- ExitButton
- 2 RadioButtons (WholeWord and MatchCase search)
All of them are working just the way I want them to except search features; I don't know how to write them properly. At the moment, they search and highlight only the first word they encounter. E.g. say I search for word "the" in the document, only the first "the" it encounters is highlighted. The rest is just untouched.
I understand this is because I've only got few lines of simple code as follows

I did try a few other snippets I found on the Internet including While loop but they didn't work as I wanted them to, and I couldn't understand them either. What I want is, which ever search option is used, when the matching result is found; it will highlight that word and when I click it again it will move onto another word. If I keep clicking, it will highlight the same words (but located in different areas) throughout the whole document and at the end, it will send back to the first matching word. Just like Adobe Reader search.
Combobox And Different Forms?

Mar 25, 2009I am new to VB.net and I am trying to work out an exercise from a book I am reading on VB. Basically I am storing some book information in a hashtable using a class called Book to store the book information. I am trying to work out my Search and Display All procedures. My Search will work for the first value in my arraylist but not for any other values. I even added the ISBN to my book class to try and use this as a search point. The ISBN is used to pull the item from the hashtable as well.
In the main code I am having problems with the ButtonSearch and ButtonAll.

Use Two Forms To Search In One And Display The Records To The Other Using VB 2010, SQL Server 2008?
Jan 18, 2012I have 2 forms in my visual basic 2010 project. Both are connected with an SQL 2008 Server where i keep a db with customers records(name,surname,address, etc).What i want to do is to give certain criteria in the first form, lets say name,and hit a search button. The program should search the db if the specified name exists.If it exists i want to show the results in the second form.By results i mean the name , surname, address,etc. If it does not exist i want to prompt the user to insert data into the db.The problem is that i know how to do this work in a single form but not how to make the two forms "communicate" with each other (meaning that one does the search and the other the projection-adding part).
Edit:I tried setting the filters but all i get is errors. I will post whatever i have written so far in case someone can help me out. So here it is.As i stated earlier i know how to search for the data in a single form(lets call it DisplayForm). As Olivier mentioned i have textboxes for the records, a combo box with the search criteria(name , surname,id) and a Search button that perfoms the search and populates the text boxes. The code for the search button is this:

Dec 13, 2009Here's my scenario...I have 2 datagridviews in my Windows Application.When I click on a row in the parentgrid, a child grid shows up with data regarding to which I have clicked.both grids are from the Database (SQL2005) only. In the child grid am using a combobox and that is my headache...this part is working fine and the problem is in the child grid.
When I try to add a new data (at the sametime into the Parent and Child) its working fine and am able to insert data into the tables...
But when I want to edit a data in the child grid, the combobox is making problem.I selected a value from the combobox and go to the next cell OMG the combobox value changed to the corresponding ID of that instead of showing the text.But I neglected this as I was getting the correct value tat has to be inserted into the DB.
Now while editing the main data am tryn to add a new child data ( assume that there are few child data already and am adding a new one).When I click save the values in the combobox are retreived as string and am not able to update the database.This happens to the rows that were already there.the reason is because of the strange behaviour of Combobox in the grid..
Am after this for 2 days and still after this..
Also am populating the combobox from the DB only.

Sep 7, 2009I started a Windows app using all code for database connection and validation. However, it was always losing the formatting that I had set at run time. So I thought I would use the long tedious process of using all of the studios objects with minimum code.
I am now at the position where I am mostly happy with the layout and how this operates. However, I want to be able to add a non-databound value to a databound combo box. I have set the properties for the combo box in the combo box tasks.
Also, I want to add the ability for the user to update that table that is bound to this control, when a value is not in the list. I know that there is a NotInList event in Access, but I can not find it in VB.Net. I did get so far with updating from the combo box using the Leave event. However, when the database was updated the control could not find the ID in the Clients table to save to the Quotes table.
