View 5 RepliesI am using the following code in the Load method of a VB form to generate random numbers in the range 1 to 8. Without fail after enough loops the range is exceeded and 9 is the random number returned every time. The line using the Rnd function is from: Rnd Function (Visual Basic)

I'm using VB.NET 2008 Express Edition and I'm trying to create a simple program that will roll a number of dice I choose. It does this by generating a random number within a specified range (I'm rolling 3-sided dice in this case so I'm generating numbers between 1 and 3) and adding each number to a textbox to create a total of all the dice rolled so far.
This is my
Private Sub butRoll_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles butRoll.Click
Dim RandNum, i As Integer
Dim RandomClass As New Random()
'if at least one dice is rolled
If txtD3.Text > 0 Then
[Code] ......
Now the problem I am having is that although my random number generator is generating the right numbers (confirmed by checking the txtLastRoll textbox), when I add it to txtTotal, it seems to be getting another number from somewhere and adding that to my random number then adding it to the total and I have no idea how this is possible! txtTotal always starts as 0 but txt1 is not showing that. Normally I would just set txtTotal to 0 there but if I do that, I won't be able to add the numbers together. I've tried finding a pattern in the mystery numbers appearing in txtTotal but they just seem to be random.
The object of this project is to write a computer program that will allow the computer to guess a number that you have selected. The computer will make a guess and you, the player, will tell the computer if it guessed too high, too low, or that it guessed the number. The program will also allow the player to start a new game or to exit the program. PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Create a form with a labeled box to display the computers guess.
2. Create a new game and an exit button.
3. Create objects to indicate if the guess was too high, too low, or right on target.
4. Create program code to respond to the players indication by selecting and displaying a new computer guess.
5. When the computer guesses the players number, reset the so that a new game may begin.
I have done all as above and so far my code looks like so
Public Class Form1
Dim Guess As New Random()
Dim HGuess As Integer, LGuess As Integer, current As Integer
[code]....
The problem i ran into is that if for example a user has a number 24, when the program makes an initial guess of 50,i want to be able to click low, and the program should generate a lower number say example 22. If i then click higher as my actual number uis 24, the program should not shoot higher than a number it has previously guess incorrect (in this case 50) it should guess anywhere from 22 - 49 and in turn limit the range of the next consecutive guesses it till hits the right number. My code right is guessing as it shuold but not within the limited ranges.
VS2010 (SP1) / .NET 4 on Windows XP. The question is simple, the answer; not so much. When generating a salt, should the LENGTH of the salt be random, fixed or a random number within a (min/max) range? I am using RNGCryptoServiceProvider to generate the salt, just unsure of the length of the salt.

Please transfer my thread to the appropriate location! I am currently trying to mess around with a simple mp3 player and am in the process of creating a shuffle list from all the songs in my playlist.
View 2 RepliesI know that there is a way in which you can generate any random number between any range using the random variable. But my question is that is there any way to do the same thing but with letters?
View 1 RepliesI was wondering how to limit the textbox to have a range of numbers like
one can input numbers from 1 to 150
I already made the textbox only do 3 characters and only numbers but kinda stuck here.
I want to limit the Textbox to a range of characters in VB. For example, I want the user to enter strings from 5-7 characters. I know how to limit the Textbox to a certain number of characters by MaxLength but that will give him the option of writing just 3 or 4 characters which I don't want to allow that from happening.
View 4 RepliesI've read numerous posts and threads about random number generation, but I havent' run across this.If I generate a bunch of random numbers, the results are radically different if I create a new Random generator for each number than if I use on Random generator for all the numbers. The results are much more consistent and evenly distributed if I use the same Random generator.I would have thought the opposite, because creating a new Random generator each time should reduce the number of random repetitions, if a different time slice is used to create the random number.[code]......

How can I do it another way?
I am working on an application that has a number of forms in it, doing asynchronous comms with a "radio network" over a serial port.To handle replies from the network in the appropriate form, I am using RaiseEvent. As time goes on, I seem to be needing more and more events. Is there a limit to the number of events that can be firing off at the same time?
I understand that computers can't actually do several things simultaneously, but obviously while the code triggered by one event is still running, another one might fire.
how do i generate random double values between range, for example:value between 2.50 to 3.50?
View 7 RepliesI am coding a lottery number generator for a homework assignment. My project needs to have functions that return random values based on a range given. The first function I am coding is for a pick 3 lottery game. The function should return three random numbers between 1 and 9. I have coded the function but it only returns one number. When the debugger runs it says my function does not return a value on all codepaths.

i have one more issues, and hope is the last for now. How can I limit a textboxe's input to only numerical with certain range of values (eg -10 to 10) and with that happening while I type in the values?

View 1 RepliesI am attempting to create a game in Visual Studio 2008 that allows a user 10 attempts to guess a random number between 1 and 50. I have a label box in which I would like to display the remaining guesses as they decrement. The code so far appears below.
My two (I am sure very basic) questions are:
1. How would I pass the random integer generated through the Generate Integer function to the AmIRight button's click function? I was trying to decrement the counter each time the "Am I Right " button is pressed.
2. I would also like to evaluate each "guess" when the "Am I right button is pressed. Is it possible to nest a Select Case statement in a For Next Loop?

i wanted to create a random number generator that iterates through a series of number between an upper and lower bound. say between 1 and 100. Basically I want the number generator to pick the numbers randomly and then display them until all 100 numbers are picked without any duplicates. so thats easy I can code that. But what I don't know is how to show those numbers in the order they are generated on a windows form. So i have basically a variable that I will let be changed 100 times (or however many times I want, I don't want their to be a size constraint just using 100 as an example) and each time the number is generated I want it displayed on screen (in a list or something not sure what. Hopefully some type of scrollable list) and each successive number also to be displayed in same format beneath it so that I can see the list in its entirety. What type of form control do i use for that? I could do messagebox.show for each iteration but then user is required to hit ok after each iteration and that would obviously be a bad idea if user selected a large number to work through. Anyways, code isn't exactly necessary just point me in the right direction, i.e.what control (if any) to use.how to format the change in data?
View 7 RepliesI am trying to create a lotto simulation, but don't know how to continue.I am using numericupdowns to allow users to select 6 lotto numbers. and labels to display what they have chosen, but i'm not sure how to prevent duplicates without creating a large number of If statementsMy question is, is there an easier way to prevent duplicates without writing a bunch of if statements?here is my code:
Public Class Form1 Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click Dim Lotto1, Lotto2, Lotto3, Lotto4, Lotto5, Lotto6 As Single Lotto1 = Val(NumericUpDown1.Text) lblLotto1.Text = Lotto1 Lotto2 = Val(NumericUpDown2.Text) lblLotto2.Text = Lotto2 Lotto3 = Val(NumericUpDown3.Text)

I don't understand how to save the user selected numbers, let the computer generate 6 random numbers, and match the two sets of numbers together to see how many matches there are. As far as I understand the numbers should be stored in 2 separate arrays and then matched together to find any matches.
I'm trying to limit the number of decimal values to 3 in numbers such as .3125 but I also have numbers such as .5 which I need to leave as is.
how can I determine if a number is 4 decimal places and cut off the last number.. I don't want to round up either.. .3125 should be .312 not .313 and .5 should stay at .5 and not .500.
I have this program generating a firstname and lastname from a file. When I run this program I enter information in three textboxes. The first two are the salary low and high(salary1.text, salary2.text) and the last one is the number of "copies"(copies.text) that I want.. When I put a number such as 10 in the text box it outputs some of the same names. The firstname file has around 100 records and the lastname file has about 1000 records Why is it generating the same name The problem is even worse if I do something like 1000 copies.. it outputs the same thing 8 times and then does something different another 8 times

I have a UI that uses datagridviews / bindingsource / datatables of typed dataset for data entry. The dataset itself is serialized to a varbinary(max) in SQL. (i.e. no tableadapter, backend schema).I would like to limit the number of rows the user can enter into some of the grids (the data is used to fill PDF forms and I don't want them entering more rows than the forms can accomodate.).I have subclassed the datagridview, added a rowlimit property and tried to manipulate the AllUsertoAddRows property
Imports System.Windows.Forms
Public Class dgv
Inherits System.Windows.Forms.DataGridView[code]......
The behavior I see is that the messagebox comes up after leaving the max row even when the user is trying to leave the grid. I can lose the messagebox and deal with notification some other way but I thought someone else may have come up with something a little more sophisticated to handle simply causing attempting to add to many records to navigate out of the grid to the next UI control.
