Generating Salt - LENGTH Of Salt Be Random - Fixed Or A Random Number Within A (min/max) Range ?
Nov 26, 2011VS2010 (SP1) / .NET 4 on Windows XP. The question is simple, the answer; not so much. When generating a salt, should the LENGTH of the salt be random, fixed or a random number within a (min/max) range? I am using RNGCryptoServiceProvider to generate the salt, just unsure of the length of the salt.

Apr 7, 2009I'm using VB.NET 2008 Express Edition and I'm trying to create a simple program that will roll a number of dice I choose. It does this by generating a random number within a specified range (I'm rolling 3-sided dice in this case so I'm generating numbers between 1 and 3) and adding each number to a textbox to create a total of all the dice rolled so far.

Now the problem I am having is that although my random number generator is generating the right numbers (confirmed by checking the txtLastRoll textbox), when I add it to txtTotal, it seems to be getting another number from somewhere and adding that to my random number then adding it to the total and I have no idea how this is possible! txtTotal always starts as 0 but txt1 is not showing that. Normally I would just set txtTotal to 0 there but if I do that, I won't be able to add the numbers together. I've tried finding a pattern in the mystery numbers appearing in txtTotal but they just seem to be random.

The computer will make a guess and you, the player, will tell the computer if it guessed too high, too low, or that it guessed the number.The program will also allow the player to start a new game or to exit the program. PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Create a form with a labeled box to display the computers guess.
2. Create a new game and an exit button.
3. Create objects to indicate if the guess was too high, too low, or right on target.
4. Create program code to respond to the player�s indication by selecting and displaying a new computer guess.
5. When the computer guesses the player�s number, reset the so that a new game may begin.

The problem i ran into is that if for example a user has a number 24, when the program makes an initial guess of 50,i want to be able to click low, and the program should generate a lower number say example 22. If i then click higher as my actual number uis 24, the program should not shoot higher than a number it has previously guess incorrect (in this case 50) it should guess anywhere from 22 - 49 and in turn limit the range of the next consecutive guesses it till hits the right number. My code right is guessing as it shuold but not within the limited ranges.

Create Custom Database In Windows Application - Double Click Custom Database File?
Jul 21, 2006With VB.net, I'm coding a simple application to get more used to the new .Net format.
I'd like to save all the information to a 'new' database file. how to create a database on the fly, once that is done i'll be able to connect to it no problem, but actually creating the file is proving difficult to work/find out.
Also, with vb.net and the newly created custom file, how can it be made to automatically open that information with the program?
Is there a method in installation to associate the file type with the new program? How can i check when the program loads if a database file has been 'double-clicked' (rather than just running from the .exe of the program) and proceed to load the data?
EDIT1 - Extra InfoThe windows application has many different fields and content etc, then i need to save that to a file that could later be loaded by 'double clicking'. I assumed the easiest way would be to create a mini-database for each unique file

Feb 22, 2010I have a DataGridView bound to a DataTable in a DataSet.I set all columns of the DataTable to System.Double.I want the last row of the DataGridView to display "PASS" or "FAIL" depending on some condition of the values in that column.How do I do this?
Ideas:
lastCell = IIF(condition, Double.PositiveInfinity, Double.NegativeInfinity)
Then, apply some conditional formatting (Inf -> PASS, -Inf -> FAIL) to the final row of the DataGridView.
Custom Class And Random Numbers
May 30, 2009I am still learning vb.net and decided to make a "horse race" to get a better understanding of inheritance and such. So first of all I made a horse class that inherits from the picturebox. I gave the horse properties such as image, height, width, x-position, and y-position. I also gave the horse a speed(between 1-1000). My idea was to have the horses start at the starting line and get them to move using a timer. Each time the timer fires the move method executes. The move method creates a new random number(seeded by DateTime.now.milisecond) between 1-1000, if the random number is lower than the speed of the horse it will "move" adding 1 to the x-position property.
Here is the code for the class :

Now things work as I expected for the most part, I created two new horses and gave them values, if one is "faster" than the other it will move faster. Here is the code I use to create two horses and put them in an array:

The only problem is if I give them both the same speed they seem to move in unison. I have tried adjusting the x-axis increment and have seen them both jump at the same time. Now I realize since they have the same "speed" they should have close to the same movements but wouldn't the random factor in the move method create some discrepancy between the two? I have ran this multiple times and am still unsure what the problem is.

Nov 17, 2010I have a htpc project that I am working on. The main program loads dll plugins which are basically other win forms. On each of these forms, including the main program, I use a picturebox (a double buffered picturebox) for the background image and then draw everything on it by hand. Whenever I load the form from the dll and show it, I get a weird flicker. It looks like it is the previously used double buffer. Is there any way to clear the background double buffer before the flicker? Or am I going in the wrong direction?

Notice the black screen with the white lines on it or the flash of the desktop after I click "Movies." How do I get rid of that?

Vb6 Double Versus .Net Double Data Type?

NOW..... When i do the above in vb.net 2005 i get the following
961.605 * 100 = 96160

929.295 * 100 = 92930
How can i get the same output as the VB results. And i have tired it ! Type conversions, math functions, everything i can think of to get the same VB6 output !
Creating A New Random Generator Each Time Should Reduce The Number Of Random Repetitions?
May 26, 2011I've read numerous posts and threads about random number generation, but I havent' run across this.If I generate a bunch of random numbers, the results are radically different if I create a new Random generator for each number than if I use on Random generator for all the numbers. The results are much more consistent and evenly distributed if I use the same Random generator.I would have thought the opposite,because creating a new Random generator each time should reduce the number of random repetitions, if a different time slice is used to create the random number.[code]......

Nov 26, 2011I am practicing using the drawing commands, and have gotten a grass background and black happy face that moves around the background.It's a 10x10 grid of 50 pixels.I want (at the moment, when i press enter) it to generate a random number of trees (15 ~ 25) at random locations on the background. The program doesn't freak out about anything, and the variables seem to be right (using stop commands) but it's not drawing anything. How can I programatically determine the end of the range - ie up to where the cells value is blank
