InputBox Cancel Sends An Empty String?
May 6, 2009
Is there any workaround to the input box sending an empty string when you press cancel? I have a web research function on my program:
Private Sub Button17_Click_1(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button17.Click
Dim temp7 As String = InputBox("Enter the album name.")
[Code].....
Basically, it provides an input box, you type in the album you want information on, and it will take you to a web page to give you information.
But when you press cancel, it does all of that anyway. It just takes an empty string...
Is there a way I can have the user press cancel to the input box and simply nothing happens? As far as I can tell, it ignores the "If windows.forms.dialogresult.ok." line...

Below is the code I have written but there seems to be a problem with the [InputBox] statement at line 11 & 15. Every time that I click cancel the program crashes. This code is just a random password generator. [code]

I have a simple windows application that pops up an input box for users to enter in a date to do searches.
How do I identify if the user clicked on the Cancel button, or merely pressed OK without entering any data as both appear to return the same value? I have found some examples of handling this in VB 6 but none of them really function in the .NET world.
Ideally I would like to know how to handle the empty OK and the Cancel seperately, but I would be totally ok with just a good way to handle the cancel.

How to know if the input box did not put anything . I must still put zero in the inputbox so I cannot make a condition that only 1 - 10 is allowed. I need the zero value so how can I identify if that inputbox gives empty result so that I can prompt a msgbox saying you did not put anything?

I have sockets receiving data from a barcode reader, the problem is the reader sends the string in chunks for whatever reason as opposed to sending the whole string, for example:
<00001>st6
comes as
<0

This must've have been asked before but I couldn't locate it. In a mixed code project (VB and C#) we were debugging some old Visual Basic code where a statement as follows could be found:
If Request.Params("xxx") <> "" Then
'do something
I considered this a bug as Request.Params could be null, in which case the statement would've become false which wasn't the idea. So I thought. I just found out, -- probably for the tenth time and I will keep forgetting -- that the following two statements are not equal, while Nothing in VB should be equal to null in C# (thought I):
if(String.Empty == null) // always false
If String.Empty = Nothing Then ' always true
Should I dismiss this as a typical Microsoft backward compatibility effort, or should I consider this a huge error in the VB.NET compiler? Does anybody know the Microsoftean opinion on this oddity?

Im using a function to do this, how would i write a function that takes the string in textbox1, goes through each letter and sends back a numerical value for the letter through the function. I work for a printshop that screenprints customized hats ,tees and a host of other stuff for a variety of small businesses. Being that we are a small business as well, we can't afford to mass ship catalogs to our clients, so I decided to build a catalog application/business card that can be emailed to them. The app is rep. specific, and after choosing which options suit them best using text fields and combo boxes, upon clicking submit, the customers' info is emailed to the rep.
To do this, I am trying to get a popup window that displays an email form with the 'mailto' address previously set, so it can't be altered and the info from the previous screen to be pasted in the body of the email. Upon clicking the confirm button, the mail is sent and the window is closed. I already have the code to copy the info from the textbox and combobox entries and paste it into the textbox in the next form, but getting the email form to be functional is appearing to be quite a feet.

I have an assignment that asks me to:
1. create a button
2. when that button is clicked, an inputBox will appear to ask the user how many words they will enter.
3. then display an inputBox for each word.
For example, when the first inputBox appears, I enter "3" (meaning that I will enter 3 words). Then there should be 3 more inputBox (each inputBox allows me to enter only 1 word)After I enter the third word, there will be no more inputBox.How can we FLAG (stop) the inputBox, or let the inputBox know when to stop showing up?

Quick question on the InputBox. I am just learning this, what is the code to "read" commands that are placed from the Inputbox? I can do this in the command line: System.Console.Writeline(), System.console.Readline()
I just would like to know how read the line from the inputbox. Also when I debug my script do I -always- need to have the command prompt in the background?

I have a webpage that has a Telerik RadComboBox on the page. One of the properties of this ComboBox is EmptyMessage, which fills the combobox with a message when an item is not selected. I am binding my combobox to a datasource at runtime and for some reason, it wipes this EmptyMessage away. Is there a way to keep my data items in tact and have the empty message there too?

Why does the first if statement evaluate to true? I know if I use "is" instead of "=" then it won't evaluate to true. If I replace String.Empty with "Foo" it doesn't evaluate to true. Both String.Empty and "Foo" have the same type of String, so why does one evaluate to true and the other doesn't?
