I am newbie programmer and I have one query for inventory control system. Initially I was planning to develop a stand-alone application, but then client added one more requirement. He wants his application should run on server, so that he can access it from anywhere in the world. Thus, I am unable to decide whether to go for stand-alone application or web application. How should I do it? How others do it?

View 5 RepliesReading about singletons classes/pattern gave me a pretty good idea for its use. But would it be a good practice to store user related variables in properties of a thread safe singleton class so i can access them by chaining?
Example
When a user logs in several variables will be assigned to a session variable like:
Session("UserID") = reader("UserID")
Session("AccessLevels") = reader("Accesslevels")
Session("UserName") = reader("UserName")
...
Now when working on my webapplication i could always access these values by calling the session() variable, but the chance to forget the session keys or erroneous write them down is significantly. So again would it be good to store these session variables in readonly properties of singleton class so I can access them like:
MySingleton.ID
MySingleton.Accesslevels
MySingleton.UserName
I am devoloping a Web Application, in which one Page has some neccessity that User should select any folder in the System and for ex if he selects ex:D:xyz, then this Path should be Saved in Database, I have written the Code for Storing in to Database and Remaining Every thing. But actually i think that if it is like a Browse Button click function to select the Folder, what i have made is, as i dont know how to make it in Web Application simply i used a textbox to be able to user to type the Path.
View 5 RepliesWhile bored I started extracting all the methods and functions in my program and moving them to a module...just trying to practice the encapsulation I've been hearing so much about. While trying to move my print functions it raised a couple questions. The issue was the 'e' in e.marginbounds and e.Graphics not being recognized. I caught 'e not declared' errors as if the system was just interpreting it as some kind of new variable. I tried moving the 'e' to several places just to experiment and the only place it seems that the intellisense would pop up with anything worth displaying was in the printDocument_printPage event itself.
what the 'e' stands for in these functions anyhow? Is it similar to the 'Me' in a Me.Close() being that it's just meant to address what's immediately at hand? Is there a way around this localization of the printing code, maybe an import of something that would make the 'e' accessible again. Such as the 'Imports System.IO' for the streamreader and writer functions.
Anyone ever set anything up to keep track of inventory?I need to check 1 time a month:
-Printers
-Barcode scanners
-labels
Am I just best to use Excel or is there better options?I need to keep track of repairs, part replacements, and orders.
Currently use word automation to mail merge some documents and print etc. A stand alone PC manage this, which means that when the document gets sent to the print queue it always has an 'owner' of the name of the stand alone PC.
View 3 RepliesI have a 'project' that I'm currently using in excel. I would like to change it over into a stand alone app. I however am not a coder and have taken very limited coding classes. I know HTML, CSS, VB and some VB.net. My question is will it be easier to convert it to a web app or simply a desktop app? Why would one work better than another?
Here's some constraints.Not every intended user will have excel (thus my want/need to convert to stand alone). The data involved will come from 3 seperate databases/locations and will require archiving once a year. The data would be 'wrote' to the app upon opening - SQL queries.
The app would simply manipulate this data and provide reports. Nothing fancy except access to certain reports would be limited based on username. The 'interface' needs to look pretty. <Not my constraint but the PTB>.
They do not want/need a report generator <already tried to get them to go for crystal reports>, no funds available and users do not want to have to learn how to write good queries. <Yes, I have tried to get them to understand but they like what I currently have in excel>

The EXE launches from the cache even if not on-line. I don't want my users to have a runnable EXE left over in their cache after exiting the program. 2. My EXE uses an interop DLL. I want my EXE to be a single stand-alone file so that I don't have to copy both the EXE and the DLL to the user. I have two datagrids, one show Item purchase and the other Usage. I have total the QtyUsed column which I place the total on the 1st row as 11, I would like it to show 8 and show the reminder on the next row and calculate the QtyonHand. Below is the code I've tried and in work but I, think I need to kind of loop to drop to the next row. I had to place the number 1 for i to get the second row, but there may be many more rows. Not sure this is clear.

I did Build a program and copied only the EXE file to USB drive. Tried to run it on different computers. XP computers had no problem running it. The ME and Win98 could not run the program since the MSCOREE.DLL was missing. I need to install something on those computers to enable them but there are security issues and patches. Is there anyway to make my program standalone?

I have created a small application console using C# in visual studio 2010, and I want to make it run on other computers with out having to install .net on that machines. and also make it just like notepad.exe with just click and it will run. I am programing a basic P.O.S. (Point of Sale) system, ad am looking for the best way to save Inventory objects. The object contains a few Singles and Strings (Such as barcode, name, price...ect). Assuming the user could possibly input thousands of such items, what is the best way to store and handle these?
My first, and simplest thought, is to add each inventory Item to an ArrayList, then once the user saves, or closes, the ArrayList prints each object to a text file, then when the program opens it reads the text file to re-populate the Array list. However, this seems very un-efficient (I assume). Would it be better to use an excell file or a Database (I know almost nothing about databases, but I can learn), or something completely different?
I am attempting to create a small script to help me build a photo inventory for a few thousand widgets. Each widget has a unique barcode. I'm working on a program to let me take a picture of the widget, then scan the barcode and use the barcode value as the name of the photo file (barcode scanner inputs text string wherever curser is positioned). Right now I have a script, which I put together from a sample available online, which lets me capture an image (.bmp) using a webcam, then it lets me save that file, using traditional Windows saving method (opens an explorer to select the location and type in the file name). It works, but I want it to work a little quicker, less clicks.
