I have database in MS Access and this is Embedded to my program in VB2010 this is a Product Database now I try to create a reminder about my product expiration date
View 6 RepliesI'm developing a very simple program in VB2010 Express that will create folders based on entries in a remote database. I am fully aware that the minimum requirement to run the exe is the latest .net framework, however I have a few added resources to the file, and when I try to run the executable on another computer, it fails to run stating that the resources are missing.
How do i compile my VB code AND the resources together into a stand-alone executable that only requires the .net framework to be installed?I have already tried to google this issue, however every answer I find has nothing to do with my initial question..
I have used VB (versions 2 - 6) through many years; however, I am crash-course training myself into the VB2008 / VB2010 world kicking a screaming. I would like suggestions as to what SQL database access method should I focus more on in my learning process without making me feel that I'm a million years behind. I know I have WinForms where I can create a datasourse and drag / drop fields or tables on a form to create a grid (not really what I'm looking for).
My trouble isn't so much designing the form but in how I access the database. Theres XML, LINQ to SQL, ADO.NET, and many other methods. Not only do I need to grasp these methods quickly but I also need to know what type of projects I should create. What I mean is...I was thinking that I would design a WinForm app; however, I see that there are WPF apps and others to chose from. This is getting deep. I know it depends on the project that I'm working on. My plans are to write an app based off of either an SQL Express 2008 or SQL Server 2008 database. This first app will be standalone for now but may later become multi-user. I know I'm far behind on my learning curve coming from VB6. I have read a bit on VB2005 / 2008 / 2010. I own
both VB2008 and VB2010. I use VB2008 at work. I know ADO.NET is still alive but by what I read online, it's a dying method and is only kept for backward compatibility. XML and LINQ to SQL and other methods are all pretty new to me.
I want to make a textbox and a Button in VB with this
<form method="post" action="http://www.unrealskill.com/index.php?app=core&module=usercp&tab=eventstab&area=ussn&func=entercode" onsubmit="disableSubmits(this)">

I am currently creating a program to send keystokes to a program at certain intervals. I need the thread to delay between keystrokes, and i need to be able to have the user input the amount of delay from the GUI via textbox. I have it running perfect with Thread.Sleep(), but it just isn't consistent enough. How can I code it to be accurate to roughly 5ms up or down? thanks, and here is the code. This is in VB 2010 by the way.
View 2 RepliesI am new to the Forum and I hope this is the best location for this thread.I SEARCHed a few threads, but did not see quite what I was after.I am interested in how to make VB 2010 create a NEW COPY of my current project, with a NEW project Folder, New Name, but a copy of all of my forms and modules.
I see that VB 2010 puts my new projects in their own folder in Libraries/Documents/Visual Studio 2010 /Projects.As an example, I am working on a project, and have it a partially completed, partially working mode, and want to save this version before I go on making further additions and modifications to it.
I want the New Version to be the same as the current version, but I don't want any changes made to effect the older version.I could manually copy the current project's folder, but I am not sure what all of the sub folders and files do, or point to, or would otherwise have to be changed.
I'm NOT looking to track each change made in the project. I just want to occassionally have a backup version I can fall back on.I have several VB 2010 texts, but they don't seem to address this question.
In VB2010 Beta 2, after program development, how do I deploy (or create a solution to), programs I have written? Also, how can I change the folder where VB 2010 looks for my help documentation Hope someone can help. I've been an on-again off-again programmer for years, but 2010 just makes my head spin a little...
As far as the solution creation, I've already tried clicking on Project-->Publish, which more or less seems like it wants to upload to a website rather than be stuck on my HD... I don't want to upload to the web;the whole reason I want to export is that I want to think I remember at one time having read something about the about box labels only displaying the new information you stick in them once the program has been turned into a .exe file, but I'm not sure; although now that I've run into this problem of creating solutions, even w/ this little bit of a program (nowhere near complete, something like a sure-to-be-crappy-take on Mass Effect 2.. it's primarily text based); heck, for that matter just about all I write programs for is because "hey.. it's enjoyable... umm... kind of" -- I originally started in college as a Computer Science major, switched to Music, transferred schools, the school I transferred to didn't think I had the skills they look for in incoming students, and from there switched to spanish major.
____, just about all I'd be good for is playing music and localization projects (both in and out of the game industry). Not so sure I'll get anywhere, but I said "what the heck, I'll upload my resume to EA".
Is there a command or couple of code lines that will pause the running program for one or two seconds?
I have a program that checks the system time every 250milliseconds and I need to skip checking it three times the first time it comes back with ":00" seconds from the system clock.
Or another option would be to reset the timer to 1000 and then back to 250...
So I am trying to get info from a scale using an RS232 cable into a VB2010 program. But before we even start talking about that, I don't know ANYTHING about serial ports. I need to learn how to get the data from the scale without programming first... I am using Win7. I do have a sample program (w/ source) I downloaded [URL]) It runs without any errors, then I have a big USER error, what do I push? How do I tinker to figure out the right settings on this interface? or any interface. These are the sittings for the scale: [URL] I am considering returning my scale and getting something with maybe USB on it, I need to be able to weight things up 100lbs, I am shipping car parts.

View 4 RepliesI'm trying to create a small game in VB2010. The gameplay is as follows:
civilians would walk/stand in a room/street and suddenly an evil character would pop from the ground/wall. This evil character would suddenly vanishes too. So, the player has to shoot it to kill the character. The evil character, civilians, etc. would be random. Also, there would be sound effects too. That is the popping up of the evil character, it's voice, the civilians voice, etc. I'm trying to make it as simple as possible but without degrading the quality of the game play. I think, I could somewhat create the graphics for the characters, scenes, etc. and can get the sound effects recorded.
So, the difficult part is,[ ] how could I make it a smoother for playing the game ?
[ ] what would be the best way to do animations ?
[ ] Creating a GIF and placing it in the picturebox and moving it ?
[x]how to play the music in background and at the same time play sound effects on certain instance ?
After upgrading code to VS2010, the error "MSB3134: The permission set requested by the application exceeded the permissions allowed by the Internet or Intranet zones. Select Full Trust or to continue using partial trust, define your custom permission set in the Security Page of the Project Designer. Bentley Software Loader". The same code ran fine in VS 2008

View 1 RepliesWhile bored I started extracting all the methods and functions in my program and moving them to a module...just trying to practice the encapsulation I've been hearing so much about. While trying to move my print functions it raised a couple questions. The issue was the 'e' in e.marginbounds and e.Graphics not being recognized. I caught 'e not declared' errors as if the system was just interpreting it as some kind of new variable. I tried moving the 'e' to several places just to experiment and the only place it seems that the intellisense would pop up with anything worth displaying was in the printDocument_printPage event itself.
what the 'e' stands for in these functions anyhow? Is it similar to the 'Me' in a Me.Close() being that it's just meant to address what's immediately at hand? Is there a way around this localization of the printing code, maybe an import of something that would make the 'e' accessible again. Such as the 'Imports System.IO' for the streamreader and writer functions.
Currently use word automation to mail merge some documents and print etc. A stand alone PC manage this, which means that when the document gets sent to the print queue it always has an 'owner' of the name of the stand alone PC.
View 3 RepliesI have a 'project' that I'm currently using in excel. I would like to change it over into a stand alone app. I however am not a coder and have taken very limited coding classes. I know HTML, CSS, VB and some VB.net. My question is will it be easier to convert it to a web app or simply a desktop app? Why would one work better than another?
Here's some constraints. Not every intended user will have excel (thus my want/need to convert to stand alone). The data involved will come from 3 seperate databases/locations and will require archiving once a year. The data would be 'wrote' to the app upon opening - SQL queries.
The app would simply manipulate this data and provide reports. Nothing fancy except access to certain reports would be limited based on username. The 'interface' needs to look pretty. <Not my constraint but the PTB>.
They do not want/need a report generator <already tried to get them to go for crystal reports>, no funds available and users do not want to have to learn how to write good queries. <Yes, I have tried to get them to understand but they like what I currently have in excel>
how to stand by and wake up computer, i found this code but it does not work for me

View 2 RepliesI'm currently using Visual Studio 2010 to make a Visual Basic project. I'm trying to make a standard .EXE file for distribution but everytime I go to publish, I keep seeing it make a Click Once application. Is there a way to complete and build a project in VStudio 2010 without making it as a Click-Once application?
View 1 RepliesTwo separate but related questions about deploying a Visual Basic 2008 .net application:1. Click One installs in a cache under local data. The EXE launches from the cache even if not on-line. I don't want my users to have a runnable EXE left over in their cache after exiting the program. Is there a way to delete or disable the cache contents on close of app or equivalent?
2. My EXE uses an interop DLL. I want my EXE to be a single stand-alone file so that I don't have to copy both the EXE and the DLL to the user. Is there a compile setting to incorporate everything, includng the DLL, into the EXE.First question relates to Click Once Web deployment. Second question refers ONLY to ordinary COMPILE, not click-once.
I have a stand alone application "test.exe" on a Windows 7 operating system.I have an application "test.exe" made in Visual basic 8.0.I have an "Auto Update" function . Call this function from "test.exe". In the first line in "test.exe".This function does the following:
1. This checks whether the current version is older than the version on specific site, if so:
1a. Removed all *. old
1b. Rename test.exe to test.old
1c. dowload new test.exe
I'm afraid I get an error when I rename "test.exe" to "test.old" because "test.exe" is now active. How can I prevent this or what else should I do?
I did Build a program and copied only the EXE file to USB drive. Tried to run it on different computers. XP computers had no problem running it. The ME and Win98 could not run the program since the MSCOREE.DLL was missing. I need to install something on those computers to enable them but there are security issues and patches. Is there anyway to make my program standalone?
