Save A Huge List Of Inventory Items?
Aug 31, 2009I am programing a basic P.O.S. (Point of Sale) system, ad am looking for the best way to save Inventory objects. The object contains a few Singles and Strings (Such as barcode, name, price...ect). Assuming the user could possibly input thousands of such items, what is the best way to store and handle these?
My first, and simplest thought, is to add each inventory Item to an ArrayList, then once the user saves, or closes, the ArrayList prints each object to a text file, then when the program opens it reads the text file to re-populate the Array list. However, this seems very un-efficient (I assume). Would it be better to use an excell file or a Database (I know almost nothing about databases, but I can learn), or something completely different?

He wants his application should run on server, so that he can access it from anywhere in the world. Thus, I am unable to decide whether to go for stand-alone application or web application. Jun 29, 2010I'm building an control interface for a system that consists of 1-4 modules. In my interface, each module has its own control set, grouped in a groupbox. I only want to show the control groups for the modules that are actually connected and hide the rest.
This is easy to do with the visble property.
I also want all of the groups to be stacked vertically in the UI such that when one is hidden, the rest below it shift up into its place as if you deleted a row in a table. It needs to be able to come back just as easily.

Jul 26, 2011when I add a Control to the List(Of Control) what gets added to the List? Is it the Control or reference to the Control.I have a collection of controls (picture boxes representing notes,comments, icons, etc.), which can be drag and drop into other picture boxes holding read only images. Those controls are never permamently added to those images, they can be move or dispose as needed. I need to save those controls to a file and retrieve it later, however when retrieved, they must be place onto the same location in the image. Saving just the image is not the option, I also need to save all the control attributes.

May 14, 2009II am trying to create a toggle button that switches a list to a range and then back to a list if needed. I am able to get it to do both but when I add an item to the list, convert to a range and then convert back to a list it leaves off the last items I entered.I tried to work in a code to select all cells but I must not be putting it in the right place.This is what I have so far:

Oct 26, 2011This is probably a really basic question - but I have a list of items (custom objects) being passed from one winform (.net 3.5) to another. I want to create a local list to store changes that only get persisted if the user clicks save. Currently if the user clicks cancel - the changes are still applied in the first form because I assume the objects are reference type.I have the save working as it calls a service layer to do the save and then refreshes the other form - but not the cancel.

I have two datagrids, one show Item purchase and the other Usage. I have total the QtyUsed column which I place the total on the 1st row as 11, I would like it to show 8 and show the reminder on the next row and calculate the QtyonHand. Below is the code I've tried and in work but I, think I need to kind of loop to drop to the next row. I had to place the number 1 for i to get the second row, but there may be many more rows. Not sure this is clear.

Textbox To Filename For Image Collection Inventory?
Aug 17, 2011I am attempting to create a small script to help me build a photo inventory for a few thousand widgets. Each widget has a unique barcode. I'm working on a program to let me take a picture of the widget, then scan the barcode and use the barcode value as the name of the photo file (barcode scanner inputs text string wherever curser is positioned). Right now I have a script, which I put together from a sample available online, which lets me capture an image (.bmp) using a webcam, then it lets me save that file, using traditional Windows saving method (opens an explorer to select the location and type in the file name). It works, but I want it to work a little quicker, less clicks.

Nov 3, 2011Im still a bit newb to coding in Vb but Im trying to figure out how to make a simple inventory system for my video game. I need it to do a few simple things and Ive never made a inventory system before so im a bit lost on how to approach it.
Functions Needed:
Player has 40 pb that act as the visual inventory or display the item in that slot.

I set up my armor menu to allow drag an drop of the item but again not sure how to even get the inventory system created to finish the armor menu to allow the object to be dragged into its box and remove its self from the player inventory.I think I need to make a array for 39 or 40 in my adventurestorage class. That part Im pretty certain of but how do I set that part up? I have over 200 images that need to act as a item that can be dropped into the inventory.
