Winsock Client Connects Once But Not Twice
Jul 3, 2011I've had a problem which Mike has kindly helped me with here: url..I now ahve a problem when disconnecting then trying to connect again. The app works fine once, but throws the exception again if you try to connect the client a second time.

Jun 15, 2010I am currently learning how to program in VB and am using sample code to make a VB Winsock client and server. I beleive the sample code was from VB 6.0. [code]Overload resolution failed because no accessible 'GetData' accepts this number of arguments.I am getting the exact same error in the exact same place in the server aswell. I have tried removing the vbString, but it comes up with a warning and the program doesn't function like it should. I am programming this in Visual Basic 2010 Express.

Sep 6, 2009I am trying to code a client - server program. I have 4 winsock controls on my main form. The client is able to connect to a free one just fine, and can figure out if they are all in use. When testing my program, I found that when I try to send data through a socket, then send different data directly after, it jumbles the data together.

That is the code I am using. When the client is connected to the server, and ready for data, it sends the packet "@Ab". When the server receives this packet, It is supposed to send the welcome alert, and then current events posted in the server.
On the client side, there is a message box that is supposed to show the welcome alert, and at the bottom on a status strip, the current events are supposed to be listed.
When the welcome alert shows, it contains the alert text fine, but then shows the packet for the events after it.

Apr 15, 2010I have a user app written in VB which up till now has relied on winsock to connect to another device we have. The user app logs onto the device and then send / receives status reports from it which are used to set the controls on the apps forms.
This has all worked well for a long time but I'm now looking to move away from Winsock as I know it's not 'the right way' to do things and I also need to be able to send non ascii characters between the app and the device it's connected to (implementing multi language support).
The issue is with Winsock it would simply throw the DataArrival event when a message was received and I could then process the message and act upon it. When using a TcpClient socket connection I'm running into problems as all responses are on the socket thread which means I can't simply change controls on the main form without using the Invoke check.
What I want to be able to do is have the thread running the TcpClient simply alert the main form thread when it receives data and make that data available to the main thread so it can start processing it and triggering all the other functions etc required (these also interact with the Form). Whilst this is happening the TcpClient monitors any further messages and sends response messages as requested from the main thread.

May 25, 2011I'm setting up a basic TCP client/server system and I'm wondering how the back-and-forth communication should ideally work. In my specific situation, the client will have to submit login credentials, and make specific requests from the server (the server interacts with a remote database).Here is what I would THINK to do.. and I'm just looking from input from other devs.
SERVER: Wait for new connections
CLIENT: Connects to server
CLIENT: Once connected, send login credentials with an instruction code.

And another scenario.. let's say the client wants to request a log of what's happened on the server recently (the text of a console application window).
CLIENT: Send request message to server for recent log
i.e. $REQ$,105
SERVER: If instruction = $REQ$ and request id = 105, get window text and send to client
i.e. $DATA$,105,<data here>
CLIENT: If instruction = $DATA$ and data id = 105, parse data and display to user
The data being requested could be plain text, or a .net datatable translated into XML, etc. It could be a variety of things.

Nov 13, 2009I have put my business logic in a partial class as suggested in best practices. One of the conditions is that one of four fields of a row has have a value. Setting the errorprovider has no problems when creating a new row in the new row event. All the textboxes in the form show the error condition.

The logic that sets them back to a no error condition though only sets the currently focused control in the form to no error. When the error is corrected.

VS 2010 Handling Multiple Events At Once?
Nov 23, 2011I took a VB class a couple semesters ago and I did really well. Unfortunately, it seems as though we only covered the very basics within the class, as I feel rather clueless right now.
Here's my issue. I'm trying to write a program that will encode notes (like music notes, A-G#) which are entered by the user, into digits, 0-9. Now I have the system laid out, in that 1-8 will represent A-A, while a 0 or 9 preceding a digit will represent a flat or sharp respectively.
Now my question is actually rather basic, but I just can't seem to figure out how to do this. The user will enter the note sequence by clicking on buttons (12 of them). What I'd like to do is create one sub that will handle all possible button clicks. I suppose it's possible that I could have separate subs for each and every button; but it just seems more efficient and cleaner to have one sub that manages them all.
The part I have completed and working properly will display a message (the same message) in a messagebox each time any of the buttons are clicked. So I have the "Handles" part working for all 12 buttons. But what I'd like to do is write code, perhaps "If" statements such that If "btnA" is clicked, then say "You clicked Button A," and If "btnASharp" is clicked, then "You clicked Button A Sharp," and so on. Is it possible to do this somehow by recognizing which event was actually triggered?

Dec 7, 2010I started out with just one table called products but I had problems with doing an update; it said sql to complex which was because the product table had nearly 100 columns in. The products table consists of header information like product quality, colour etc. Then there are 3 blocks of columns which mainly consist of a size as being the column name and a quantity as being the value. I have put these in three seperate tables to get around the SQL update problem. My problem is what is the best way to code this. The tables link to the header table using an autonumber primary key.
