Multiple Panels And Groupboxes And Tab Order Maintenance?

Jul 10, 2009

I have a VB.NET (2005) application designed by my boss that uses a over 100 input and display controls (textboxes, comboxes, etc.), many with labels associated. My boss asked me to set the tab order, and then trap keypress so the user can use enter to navigate controls. I have 2 apps like this to work on.For the tab order, I could not use the View/TabOrder feature, since there are so many blue little tabindex popups showing, that I can not see any of the controls on the form to click. I tried clicking 'through' the popup with some success, but it still did not give me the tab order I wanted. The tab assistant that came with CodeSMART did not give me the result I wanted, either, so I could use it.

The controls on this usercontrol are spread among many groups, which in turn are spread among several splitcontainer panels. The 1st panel in the main splitcontainer has 3 main groupboxes which are selected via a toolstripbutton ( which sets the desired groupbox to visible and turning the others to invisible.) Example:

Private Sub ShowMainPanel()
'Note: Panels are groupboxes
Me.MaterialPanel.Visible = False

VS 2010 - Can't Access Multiple Panels - Make Labels Merged In Panels

May 8, 2012

I'm trying to make custom ListBox with some graphics. Base is ItemCollection - each item contains Panel, 2x label and 2x picturebox. What each panel have to do:

- Change backcolor on MouseEnter and set color back when MouseLeave occurs.
- On MouseDown(LMB) - Panel stays "selected" - different color.

Problem: I can't access multiple panels at a time(and I need to), just one via sender as in function. Of course, I can do it hacky way, but I want to do it effective and regular. Is ItemCollection the right solution or should I do it just like an array of panels? Also I want them in one "box", ItemCollection is good for it.

Second "problem": I need to make labels "merged" in panels, when i MouseEnter them(labels), background color on that panel sets to my default color. when i MouseClick them(labels), nothing happens (need to "select" parent panel). It can be again fixed with hacky way, just disable labels - but then the colors of labels are unchangeable.

.net - Label In Front Of Or In Multiple GroupBoxes?

Sep 12, 2011

This is in VB.NET 2003

I have a Form with a few GroupBoxes overlaying one another and being shown based on what the form's supposed to be showing at the moment.

What I want is to have a text object (label, textbox, whatever) be shown regardless of which GroupBox is visible at the moment. Labels that are not inside the GroupBox itself show up under it and are not visible (bringing to front doesn't help), similar issues with TextBoxes, Panels.. I don't know what else to use.

Am I missing something, is there another way of showing text that overlays GroupBoxes without being in them?

Randomize The Order Of 20 Panels On A Form?

Dec 10, 2009

I am trying to conduct a research experiment using a psychological measure. Basically its a bunch of words and you need to specify a value for (1-5). So, what I did was take a numericupdwn box and a label and paired them up using a panel. I did the same thing for 19 other sets. I placed each one carefully on the grid, nice and neatly, however I need to randomize the order of how they are arranged.

I spent hours trying to figure out how to set the location point for a panel. But to use variables through a random number generator, is simply too difficult!

Multiple Panels Instead Of Forms?

Mar 3, 2009

To save from using several different forms in programs. I'd like to make just a few panels to represent each one. Then when I need to display one I just set it to visible or not visible.

For example, a quiz program. The 1st 10 questions are on one panel, the 2nd 10 are on a 2nd panel. They are both identical except different questions.

The problem is, when I try to put them both on the form, they have to be in different areas or else one will go inside the other. How can I keep several panels on one form without them going inside each other, in other words how can I keep them separate?

Multiple Panels Overlaid On The Same Form?

Aug 4, 2010

I would like to have two different panels (with associated buttons, textboxes, etc.) on the same location on a form. Is this possible and if so, how do I go about doing it? I need this to control two different boards with the same application.I realize it would be difficult to edit the form if they are on top of each other. Is there a way to place these panels apart while designing/coding, but have them located in the same spot on the form during runtime?

Selecting Multiple Panels To Be Enable??

Jun 11, 2011

I have 14 panels in my form, the user then input a number in the textbox. Then this textbox will now determine how many panels will be enable. My formula would be, userinputtextbox/0.5=panels to be open. Example: 3/0.5=6.

So far this is my code:
for x = 1 to UserInputTextbox.text
CType(Me.Controls("P" & x.ToString ), Panel).Enabled = True
next

But I got this error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Splitting Screen Into Multiple Panels Possible?

Combobox Items Maintenance ?

Feb 24, 2011

I'm in the process of converting an Access 2007 database to vb.net (in visual studio 2010). I want the user to be able to maintain the items in these comboboxes....adding, updating, and deleting any item they choose. In Access, I had a button which would display the combobox items and allow the user to maintain. Upon leaving this display, the combobox would be refreshed. Is this the best practice for vb.net? Would it be any different than what I'm doing now in Access?

Put Computer In Maintenance Mode?

I know how to stop and start the service from VB.Net but I need to put the computer in maintenance mode before stopping the service to prevent work tickets from being automatically generated.

Is there a way to put a computer in maintenance mode from VB.Net? And also to take it out of maintenance mode?

Execution Order In Multiple Forms?

Jun 6, 2011

am planning to write a simple program which reads two binary files and apply a simple math function ((file1-file2)/(file1+file2)) then outputs the file (file3). Then the user selects the file (file3) outputted as an input and the program again reads the file and apply another math function ((file3 - 0.2) / (0.5 - 0.2)) to it then output the final file (file4).I would like to eliminate the user input or at least minimize the user input. In other words, the user should execute the program once at the beginning and the program should do the rest. Basically there will be 2 form applications in my program. I want to make it automatic in a way that the program will select two files itself (the user should not select) then output the result and then takes that as an input and applies math function etc.My problem is that I do not know how to start the second form application after the first program ends because the second form application inputs the file which was outputted by the first form application.

Printing Multiple PDF Files In Order

May 16, 2012

I'm having trouble many PDF files in the order that I send the print command using the following [Code]

It prints just fine other than it not being in the correct order. The only way I managed to get it in the correct order is by adding a timer and checking to see if there are any jobs in the print queue, which really slows down the printing process, especially when creating 500+ print jobs.

I was wondering if there is a better way to print these files, to where it will print fast and still be in order. A couple things I have in mind, but not sure if possible, is to create a text file or XML file that has the list of files to print and the quantity and queue the printer off that list or to convert PDF files to XPS documents and then using PrintQueue class to add the XPS file as a print job.

Linq Group By And Order By Multiple Conditions?

Jan 16, 2012

I have the following:

myFilteredContractors = (From c In myFilteredContractors
Join cc In myConClasses On c.ContractorId Equals cc.ContractorId
Where inClassifications.Contains(cc.ClassificationId)[code].....

This is properly ordering this list of contractors by the number of classifications that they have.I also want to order them by whether or not they have a field set (CompanyOverview), which if is an empty string should be below those contractors who have set their CompanyOverview. Also, after the CompanyOverview is ordered I want to order by Registration Date.So it should order by:

Number of Classifications
Whether Overview has been set (c.CompanyOverview)
Registration Date (c.AppliedDate)

Is it possible to all of this in LINQ?

Linq - Order By Multiple Columns Using Lambda Expressions

Nov 16, 2009

I'm still trying to get my head around the whole "Lambda Expressions" thing.

Can anyone here give me an example ordering by multiple columns using VB.Net and Linq-to-SQL using a lambda expression?

Here is my existing code, which returns an ordered list using a single-column to order the results:

Return _dbContext.WebCategories.OrderBy(Function(c As WebCategory) c.DisplayOrder).ToList

Note: The WebCategory object has a child WebPage object (based on a foreign key). I'd like to order by WebPage.DisplayOrder first, then by WebCategory.DisplayOrder.

I tried chaining the order bys, like below, and though it compiled and ran, it didn't seem to return the data in the order I wanted.

Return _dbContext.WebCategories.OrderBy(Function(c As WebCategory) c.DisplayOrder).OrderBy(Function(c As WebCategory) c.WebPage.DisplayOrder).ToList

Real Time Form Updating - Keep Single Threaded - Ongoing Maintenance

Dec 14, 2009

I have an app that I'm trying to keep single threaded, mostly for reasons to do with simplicity of ongoing maintenance. I've structured it so that I can eventually multi-thread it if need be but I'd rather not at this point. It's semi-real time and does perpetual looping to display a number of different graphs and do various work with both the graph display and the work being hosted in their own respective objects. If you're familiar with the Windows dispatch manager it's that general paradigm run synchronously. And yee haw, it pretty much works at this point and runs fast enough to meet requirements by a happy margin. I have a cosmetic problem that I'd like to solve if I could. When I left-click and move any form around, my graphs stop updating until I release the left click button. I was thinking about a doevents somewhere in the click event catalog.

Using 'magic Numbers' In Code Is Not Good Practice And Makes Maintenance Difficult

Feb 26, 2012

"First of all please TURN OPTION STRICT ON.I make no apology for the capitals - I consider it that important. When you do you will see that you are still using HorizontalAlignment instead of ContentAlignment.VB is converting from one to the other for you.Although that works fine here there are many cases when it will not be what you intended and can cause some very hard to find bugs.Under Tools | Options | Projects and Solutions | VB Defaults Set: Option Strict ON, Option Explicit ON, Option Infer OFF".I did do this but it showed no errors, so I placed 'Option Strict On' at the start of the code, it then showed HorizontalAlignment with the squiggly line. I did edit my code to show this but I think you must have read it before I did. All other suggestions I will note and from now try to implement.Using "magic numbers" in the code is not good practice and makes maintenance difficult.Declare all such numbers at the top and use the names in the code.Is this what you mean? Const SpinTime As Integer = 500

Now when ever I refer in code to SpinTime it will always be 500..Change the NumberOfBoxes to 10 and run the app.In mine, to change boxes to 10 I needed to alter the code in 5 places, in yours 1 place! Talk about proof of the pudding etc.Now to my question, in the program when the start button is clicked and the five random numbers are displayed I have to stop and restart the program to generate five more. So I thought I would create another button 'Reset' this I did and all worked but it seemed a waste so I then just kept the start button in place and changed the text to Reset eg [code] This is fine the one thing I can't figure is how to replace the five numbers that were removed so that it is picking 5 from 500 every time. Now I'm at the end of all this writing I have it! just comment out the line 'Numbers.Remove(Number).

Algorithm - Combine Multiple Lists, Resulting In Unique List And Retaining Order

Apr 28, 2010

I want to combine multiple lists of items into a single list, retaining the overall order requirements. i.e.:

1: A C E
2: D E
3: B A D

result: B A C D E

above, starting with list 1, we have ACE, we then know that D must come before E, and from list 3, we know that B must come before A, and D must come after B and A.If there are conflicting orderings, the first ordering should be used. i.e.

1: A C E
2: B D E
3: F D B

result: A C F B D E 3 conflicts with 2 (B D vs D B), therefore requirements for 2 will be used.

If ordering requirements mean an item must come before or after another, it doesn't matter if it comes immediately before or after, or at the start or end of the list, as long as overall ordering is maintained.

This is being developed using VB.Net, so a LINQy solution (or any .Net solution) would be nice - otherwise pointers for an approach would be good.

Edit: Edited to make example 2 make sense (a last minute change had made it invalid)
