Remotely Terminating Program To Update New Version

Nov 8, 2011

I have several programs written in VB2008 on a network shared drive. Multiple PC's which have access to this drive run the programs. The problem is when I want to upgrade the program or a file/picture with changes, either I cannot overwrite the .exe file because someone is running it, or for example, a background picture on an open form is loaded and then I cannot change the picture on the server. I thought of placing a timing loop in the programs to frequently check a file on the server, which when I need to make a change, I can fill with an appropriate trigger word (like "exit") that would have the program terminate and be unable to restart until I change the file to "OK", but this seems rather crude. I assume there's a better and more elegant method.

V.NET Winform Program Terminating Without Any Valid Reason On End Sub?

Oct 7, 2011

I'm using agsXMPP in my .NET project (WinForms).I have the following Code block, this is executed whenever a message is received from any client. Now whenever a message is received, this block executes and the program terminates..Has this something to do with threads? (I've heard that agsXMPP encapsulates a thread on which it works)

Private Sub messageReceived(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal msg As protocol.client.Message)
Dim chatMessage() As String
Static Dim Hi_ed As Integer = 0[code].........

Remotely Control My Program?

Sep 5, 2009

I started learning programming using VB.NET a few months ago, so I'm still like a total noob at this, and I'm not experienced enough with the Microsoft Visual Basic Library to get my answer. I have done some Google searches, and still haven't found any relevant answers.

Okay, suppose I want make a VB.NET desktop app. that displays the number "1" in a textbox when a button is pressed... I can easily make that program, but what if I want the program to, on my remote command, display the number "2" instead when the button is pressed?

Is it possible to write code that reads gmail messages? I know that gmail is pretty open about it's SMTP and POP ports and stuff.[code]...

Uninstall A Program Remotely Using .net?

May 1, 2009

I've taken MS 4994A (Intro to VB.net), and am studying for 4995A (Advanced Intro to VB.net)Previous experience with VB6 and C++ tells me that the way to do it would be to create a program that will accept a list of computer names and check the registry one-by-one (I'm open to suggestions, though, of course). If it finds the program we're wanting to remove, it will remove it, then automagically install .net 2.0 and the .net version of the programs that were just removed.

Remotely Control A Graphical Program Through A Command Prompt

Jun 30, 2011

I have created a VB.NET program using windows forms. The program runs on a remote PC and displays information on a screen. The computer does not even have a mouse or keyboard connected to it. The program shows the information based on the file that is loaded.I want to be able to change this file remotely to another file that is already on the remote PC. I can't use a graphical remote desktop client as we have very limited bandwidth. So, my idea is to change the file using the command prompt.I'm not sure how to do this. Should I use something like this and load DosModule first:[code]How would I then read commands that is send to the program? I also only want one instance of the program running.

Mobile Phone To App - Remotely Disable Email Sending Feature Of Program By User ?

Feb 7, 2010

Ok, I haven't started this yet, but I'm just thinking out loud for a project I have coming up.

One approach I am thinking about pursuing involves "messaging" my application (windows form in VS 2008 pro) from a mobile device, whether it be a laptop, phone, pda, etc.

is this possible? (1st question) and what is the "correct" implementation to do this? (2nd question)

The idea is to remotely disable the email sending feature of my program by the user (owner of the application) to kill email alerts if they are not at their computer.

Doesn't Update Version Number On Msi's?

Oct 12, 2011

Whenever I build my VB.Net project, the Assembly version does not automatically update as it is supposed to with the * in the third box in the Assembly Information. The only way I have found to (sometimes - it doesn't always work) get the version number to update is to Clean the Project, remove the *, Rebuild, reClean, put the * back in, and Rebuild again. What could be causing this issue to happen?

I should note that my coworker reports no such issue on his machine when Building the same Project; also, I must admit to some confusion on my part as to how this behavior is even possible, given that the error persists even if I remove every possible intermediate file I can think of that could possibly even be carrying the old version number, so how does it even know the old version number?

IDE :: Assembly Version, File Version And Publish Version In ClickOnce In VS 2008

Mar 31, 2009

How they relate and differ from each? What are the best practices for version control? Is there a primer about publish online? Or a good book?

And is it possible to make ClickOnce and a msi in one solution of VS 2008? If so, is there any conflict or pitfall?

BTW I am using VB if that makes any difference.

.NET Terminating Threads In An Orderly Fashion

Jul 26, 2009

Currently, I have a RingBuffer which is run by a producer and a consumer thread. In looking for a method of terminating them orderly, I thought I'd use a flag to indicate when the producer had finished and then check that flag in my consumer along with the number of ring buffer slots that need to be written. If the producer has finished and the ring buffer has no slots that need to be written the consumer can terminate. However, if I artificially lengthen the time the producer takes by inserting a sleep, the consumer does not terminate. I believe this is a consequence of the semaphores being used. Here is the code I'm working with. Notice that the program will "hang" after all slots have been written. The producer terminates, but the consumer "hangs".[code]

Terminating A Windows Form Application?

Dec 18, 2009

What is the proper way to terminate a Windows Form application while it is just executing in the MyApplication_Startup routine?I have an application that looks for a database file upon startup. If it does not find it I prompt the user and ask if they wish to locate the file or not. If they choose not to locate the file I want to just terminate the application. Currently i just execute the "End" statement, but that does not seem like the proper way to terminate a program.

VS 2008 Terminating A Process Handle

Aug 24, 2009

I have a DLL that copies an Access database, opens it, reads it, and then closes it. The second time through it is unable to copy the Access DB because the EXE has an open handle to it. The EXE does not reference the Access DB at all, it just has the open handle because it calls my DLL. After I close the DB, I would like to terminate the EXE's handle to the Acess DB. BTS - I wrote the DLL and it is my Access DB. Another company wrote the EXE and I can not make any changes to it.

Dim assemName As AssemblyName = assem.GetName()
Dim ver As Version = assemName.Version
Me.Text = "1st CPC Check Deposit Program Version" & " " & ver.ToString
