View 2 RepliesWhenever I build my VB.Net project, the Assembly version does not automatically update as it is supposed to with the * in the third box in the Assembly Information. The only way I have found to (sometimes - it doesn't always work) get the version number to update is to Clean the Project, remove the *, Rebuild, reClean, put the * back in, and Rebuild again. What could be causing this issue to happen?
I should note that my coworker reports no such issue on his machine when Building the same Project; also, I must admit to some confusion on my part as to how this behavior is even possible, given that the error persists even if I remove every possible intermediate file I can think of that could possibly even be carrying the old version number, so how does it even know the old version number?
How they relate and differ from each? What are the best practices for version control? Is there a primer about publish online? Or a good book?
And is it possible to make ClickOnce and a msi in one solution of VS 2008? If so, is there any conflict or pitfall?
BTW I am using VB if that makes any difference.
is the a program or a script that will allow people to click a button or something on a vb 2008 program and it will connect to a server and update it to latest version?
View 1 RepliesI have several programs written in VB2008 on a network shared drive. Multiple PC's which have access to this drive run the programs. The problem is when I want to upgrade the program or a file/picture with changes, either I cannot overwrite the .exe file because someone is running it, or for example, a background picture on an open form is loaded and then I cannot change the picture on the server. I thought of placing a timing loop in the programs to frequently check a file on the server, which when I need to make a change, I can fill with an appropriate trigger word (like "exit") that would have the program terminate and be unable to restart until I change the file to "OK", but this seems rather crude. I assume there's a better and more elegant method.

1) Auto increase version number once rebuild? For example, next rebuild will make version number as 1.0.1 and so on,

I want to enable auto updating on my vb app.So I got Project--> Properties--> click the Application tab. Click the Assembly Information button --> Update the Assembly version. Then click ok.Then I build my app. Then I click the Publish Wizard. I specify the location to publish the app. It is an ftp folder.Then I click Next.It asks how will the user Install the app.I select FROM a CD-ROM.then I go next.It asks where will the app check for updates.I specify the same ftp folder.then I go finish. And it publishes to the ftp location.Then I get the setup file from that location and run it on my pc. It loads my app fine. then I build and publish again. But when I copen my app it doesn't update with the latest version.

The number of fields may grow with attributes for more specific product tyes. The description may contain a large amount of data.I want to create a slim version of this product class that only contains the data needed. I'm only displaying 4 of the 12 fields when listing products on a category page. It seems like a waste to retrieve all of the data when most of it isn't being used. I created a parent class of ProductListing that contains the 4 fields I need for the category page

ShortTitle
Price
Img
Then created a class of Product that inherits from ProductListing containing all product data. It seems backwards as "ProductListing" is not a kind of "Product" but I just started reading about inheritance a few months ago so it's stil a little new to me. Is there a better way to get a slim object so I'm not pulling data I don't need?
if you are debugging or releasing a projet , vs writes exe or bin files to the bin and obj folder in a release and debug version, are ther differences bewteen these files with the same name in 4 folders ?, eg myproject.exe

I am trying to make a html editor that allows you to preview the code as you type.
The users are able to see a live preview of the text they're typing. What I'm trying to do is get the webbrowser to load images from a different location. So, when the user changes the text in the richtextbox, the webbrowser.documenttext is changed to the text of the richtextbox and the page is loaded. But, if the code contains images, the webbrowser won't load them because there isn't any file, just the documenttext. The richtextbox is linked with the actual file itself, but I can't make it constantly write text to the actual file because that would make the save function pointless. Writing the text to another file in the same location isn't an option either, because that is too slow.
So, how can I make the webbrowser read the images from a self-selected directory?

how to specifically identify all the specific table cells that are selected in a webbrowser control. To be specific once I load a page into the webbrowser control and it is displayed I simply want to be able to click and drag with the mouse over multiple cells. I have created a license system for my application with MySql about half a year ago. What it would do is take the serial number and send it to my server if the key was correct it would return a 0 if its wrong the return value would be a 1.The problem was that when the serial number was entered correctly my program would create a "fake file" for example vb.dll in the system.And on run time my program would check for that vb.dll if the file exist it would skip my trial program and run the app as a full version. Half year later i think creating a "fake file" and checking for it on start up is extremely wrong and that's not very good security.How can i check the difference between a full version and unregistered version?

I would like my program to overwrite its previous version such that users don't have to uninstall the previous version before installing the new one.
I'm guessing it has something to do with setting Publish Version (Major, Minor, Build, Revision), Assembly Version or File Version.
I'm using VB.NET but this question applies to any OO language - Java, C# etc. I've tagged the question with Java and C# but will remove if not considered appropriate. I have an entity class ClassAAA that contains a reference to ClassBBB as one of it's attributes:

I could make the ClassBBB reference public (or supply a public getter method) but that would expose the inner workings of ClassAAA. What I'm thinking of doing is making the ClassBBB reference Friend so that it is only visible in the assembly i.e. a data layer and is not visible to client projects. But this stills feel like I'm exposing the inner workings of the class.
I am working on a project that uses lots of custom class objects.Before starting work on real project, I tested the object behaviour on a temporary project. And find that if i add the object to a list and combobox and then make any change to the object property then it reflects in list and combobox.But after using the same process in real project the change does not reflect. how can i update object property placed in the combobox.for eg.Class X has property id and name created objX of type Class X and set id=1 and name='All' insert objX to combobox now, in the same form and in other function when i get objX from combobox and change name='None', then it does not reflect in combobox.

I could of course use a case statement to pick the object based on a variable, but it seems to me like there should be a more direct way. Here is a smaller example of what I would like to do.In my form I have 4 picture boxes (pbox1, pbox2, pbox3, and pbox4). I then want to change the image in one of the boxes, but the box I want to change will be determined by a variable (say maybe a randomly generated number). Is there some way to dynamically concatenate the "pbox" with the number that VB would understand it and use it as an object?In this example I could easily build a case statement to handle the selection, but in my real program there will be many more than 4 options.
