This is not a problem most of the time; C-languages even use class name as constructor methods' name. But consider a generic declaration:
Public Class MyListOfIntegers
Inherits MyCustomList(Of Integer)
End Class

This scenario has 2 issues. The first one is that constructors are not inherited, and you have to provide pass-through wrappers in every derived class, — this is quiet dumb, but tolerable. The second issue is more severe: derived class inherits CloneMe() method which returns MyCustomList(Of Integer) , not MyListOfIntegers ! Every returned value must be manually DirectCast 'ed for further use with methods that expect MyListOfIntegers . This issue, together with the first one, renders inheritance of generic class almost useless.
So I need a "MyClass" alternative for static type-binding inside type definition. In case of generic type that is referencing other compound types, task could be accomplished by adding second parameter to type section:
Public Class MyCustomList(Of T, TList)
...
Public Function CloneMe() As TList

But since we must reference our own type, it would create an infinite recursive loop of additional typeparamlist arguments. How can this be resolved, aside of creating separate classes without generics?
i am trying to display the current domain name on my VB app. When a system running the VB app is connected to AD domain controller, it works fine..but when i run this VB when not connected to the domain, it crashes with error below. all i want to do is if appication cannot talk to a domain controller, display an error message."An error occurred creating the form. I have this code for my update checker. It loads a blank text file on my server containg the current version. I have it set to naviagte to this url then searches the web browser for the current version. If it cannot find it then there is a newer version, and a button becomes visible which lunches a webpage that has the current version. I'm trying to use the errortext field on a cell to display a validation error. It works fine if I leave the cell, but I can't figure out how to display it while staying in the cell. I have seen examples where the code updates the row's errortext, but I really want to mark the cell in error.

Finally, how do I make the time load when the form runs? I can't seem to find an event, that allows the time to display when I run the form. Currently, I have to click the area containing the label to get the time to display.
I have a class that contains one function: "ShowDialog()" It creates a new openfiledialog and sets its title, but when it is run, the title of the openfiledialog is set to the current directory that is shown in the dialog. I would not like this behavior. Here is the code:

View 5 RepliesI'm facing problem while reference vb6 dll in .net project. When ever i refer a vb6 dll in .net project the interop dll is created with same version(1.2.0.0). Its creating problem for me as the setup used to deploy the application at client side does not replace the dll if the version is same as before. I want to change the version of the interop dll (created using vb6 dll). I read it cam done using tlbIMP but how to create tlb file for vb6 dll.

He responded that it would not run and the PC reported "this program requires Net Framework 2.0". He cannot update the PC in question with Net Framework 2.0. So my question is can i somehow change my program to use an earlier version of Net Framework?
View 11 RepliesI have several programs written in VB2008 on a network shared drive. Multiple PC's which have access to this drive run the programs. The problem is when I want to upgrade the program or a file/picture with changes, either I cannot overwrite the .exe file because someone is running it, or for example, a background picture on an open form is loaded and then I cannot change the picture on the server. I thought of placing a timing loop in the programs to frequently check a file on the server, which when I need to make a change, I can fill with an appropriate trigger word (like "exit") that would have the program terminate and be unable to restart until I change the file to "OK", but this seems rather crude. I assume there's a better and more elegant method.

View 4 RepliesI've been using a piece of code I found that reads in joystick movement into my VB application using DirectInput. Building an executable works great, the program operates as should be, however when I publish my program for final deployment, I get the following error:
"WindowsApplication has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
Here's some of the error details:
