I'm working on an update to one of my programs, and for some reason this new version isn't working on Windows XP. It crashes immediately upon launching (before the GUI is even visible on screen). This shows up in the Event Viewer[code]...

I am developing an application that will run with a GUI when no commandline args are passed, but can also run invisibly if started from the commandline and passed necessary arguments. I have been asked to include a /version argument that will return a version number. For simplicity this version number can be stored in a variable. Without doing something like writing the version number out to a file, what is the best way for me to return this info to the caller? My app will almost always be started from a script, so the script will have to read the version number and make decisons based on the version.

I know that to start a program at startup, we should add this subkey
"C:Program Files<myprogram's path><nameoftheprog>.exe"
to
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
Alright!
But the problem is when my program has to delete a certain file in C:/ at startup, it just can't because it's not ran as administrator!

How they relate and differ from each? What are the best practices for version control? Is there a primer about publish online? Or a good book?
And is it possible to make ClickOnce and a msi in one solution of VS 2008? If so, is there any conflict or pitfall?
BTW I am using VB if that makes any difference.

I have a procedure at the end of my console application that ask the user to either hit enter to end the program, or type s to perform another search. The issue I'm having is no matter what the user types in the program end. What I would like to happen is if the user types s, then the program starts over and lets the user perform another search. The program is procedural and I need to find a way to start back off at the top of the program which ask the user to type a name to search.

I have searched lots of way to make a 30 day trial limit of my program. They say "Use -Settings- in visual basic application for your variables" to save the information about user (like : registered or not registered or when the program expire). (You can see the 'Settings' when you double-click on "my project" in "solution explorer") Does the data which we use with "settings" saved in our program or somewhere in the computer?

This is probably an easy question: I need to change my version number from 5.4 to 5.5. This is not the assembly version, but the version (I think) of my executable.

I have written a small program in VB 2010 Express and I would like to show the version number of my program on the form. I looked through the HELP files and found an example. I put the example in my code like this:'Get the version of the current application.
Dim assem As Assembly = Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly()
Dim assemName As AssemblyName = assem.GetName()
Dim ver As Version = assemName.Version
Me.Text = "1st CPC Check Deposit Program Version" & " " & ver.ToString
I am up to version 1.0.0.8 but this is what prints:
1st CPC Check Deposit Program Version 1.0.0.0
Why doesn't it print 1.0.0.8 ?

I have made my application to start automaticly when windows start (registry ../currentversion/run/appname + path). In this mode the application start minimized and an little icon appear in the notification icon area. With this icon you can maximize the app or exit it.If you exit the app and start it again using the Menu (Start/programs etc) than the application start in minimized mode (and in this case I would like to have it in normal mode) because the setting autostart is still true.Is there a way you can detect when the application start when windows startup using the above registry or when people click on an icon in the programs menu (or desktop)?

I wrote a programme and sent it to my client, (it was not a deployment or install file - just the .exe). He responded that it would not run and the PC reported "this program requires Net Framework 2.0". He cannot update the PC in question with Net Framework 2.0. So my question is can i somehow change my program to use an earlier version of Net Framework?

I have several programs written in VB2008 on a network shared drive. Multiple PC's which have access to this drive run the programs. The problem is when I want to upgrade the program or a file/picture with changes, either I cannot overwrite the .exe file because someone is running it, or for example, a background picture on an open form is loaded and then I cannot change the picture on the server. I thought of placing a timing loop in the programs to frequently check a file on the server, which when I need to make a change, I can fill with an appropriate trigger word (like "exit") that would have the program terminate and be unable to restart until I change the file to "OK", but this seems rather crude. I assume there's a better and more elegant method.

I know how to check for the version information from inside a VB2005 application:
Dim version as String= String.Format("Version {0}", My.Application.Info.Version.ToString)
That works fine. But let's say I have two applications, A and B. App A wants to find out what app B's version is. Is there a way to do that?

I've been using a piece of code I found that reads in joystick movement into my VB application using DirectInput. Building an executable works great, the program operates as should be, however when I publish my program for final deployment, I get the following error:
"WindowsApplication has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
Here's some of the error details:
EventType : clr20r3 P1 : windowsapplication.exe P2 : 1.0.0.0
P3 : 4c0f1ae6 P4 : microsoft.visualbasic P5 : 10.0.0.0 P6 : 4ba2183b
P7 : 88 P8 : 8 P9 : system.io.fileloadexception
And then a second error pops up shortly after:
AppName: windowsapplication.exe AppVer: 1.0.0.0 AppStamp:4c0f1ae6
ModName: kernel32.dll ModVer: 5.1.2600.5781 ModStamp:49c4f482
fDebug: 0 Offset: 00012afb
The errors only occur once I try installing the program and just before the application loads. Here's the code for the program:
Imports System
Imports System.Windows.Forms
Imports Microsoft.DirectX.DirectInput
Imports Microsoft.DirectX

I am trying to launch a program using System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("C:Program FilesFrets on FireFretsOnFire.exe") but the program always fails - the program generates an error log - so its obviously trying to start - ive included the log text but i doubt it will be useful.
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "FretsOnFire.py", line 45, in <module>
File "GameEngine.pyo", line 23, in <module>
Yet it runs fine when double clicked? why i can launch it from explorer but not from my code
