Text / Reference Book Recommendations?
Sep 7, 2011I programmed in Basic, Fortran and PL1 many years ago. I now am developing a complex Excel application that needs use of VB macros. I've recorded and modified several VB macros so far, but have gone beyond my skill level trying to use VB indexed variables that link back to a spreadsheet. What text/reference book would you recommend for my level of skill? I'm not trying to become an expert -- just need help with approaches and correct syntax to simple programming issues if, while, indirectly addressed variables, etc.

Oct 27, 2009I'm a networking student and hardware is my forte, but am required to do this VB Programming class and this particular project is just about got me ready to pull my hair out!I inputted this code verbatem from the text entitled, "Programming w/Microsoft Visual Basic 2008" by Diane Zak have double & triple checked & this is exactly as is printed in the book on pages 471-473.But it comes up with errors, and then we're supposed to modify this thing so it will accept any word up to 10 letters and only allow letters A-Z to be entered by player 2.But if the original code doesn't work, makes it pretty hard to modify it & make it work! Jul 8, 2009I've recently decided to switch from VB6 to VB2008 and am looking for some advice for a certain type of book I seek.Already I've aquired several VB2008 books, but the type of reference book I'm seeking I can't find.For VB6 I have a book called "The visual guide to visual basic". It's a very very very very old book but its gold, platinum and diamonds in one.This book basically takes ALL controls, commands, etc, and in alphabetical order as a sort of encyclopedia, explains its purposes, possibilities, properties together with many examples.
If I was uncertain about a control or command I could simply look it up in this book and almost always find what I was looking for.My question, does anybody know of an equivalent for VB2008?

I would like to be able to copy all of them and their properties into another project for various reasons. But, even though I have an identical class set up and built in the new project, i cannot paste between the two projects.(.net 3.5)

Apr 20, 2009Slightly odd problem I'm having at the moment, vb.net 2008 was working fine for me until today when it has decided it doesn't want to open any of my projects/solutions anymore. When I click them in recent projects or even navigate to them and try to open them the program attempts to load them and then just stops without returning any error.

Each project has a starting form , lets call them SF1 , SF2 and SF3 .What I would like to ask you is how can I write code in order to have both the solution and the partial projects , working . You see , the solution (which as far as I know will also be accompanied by a new project) has to have a starting form ; lets call it SF0 .A) First of all I'd like to know how can I call a partial project from the solution itself .B) What code do I have to write in the partial projects in order to keep them running correctly when they are separate (that is not part of the solution) . I can make the little auto wizard that VS2008 makes for you, but my app needs more custom options. VS 2008 Sharing A Form Between Two Projects?
Jul 12, 2011I want to use a form in two project.
I have developed it in one project, I now want to make it available to another project.
I have removed it from the project and moved the .vb & *.resx files to a directory for common modules.
I then go into my project select Add Existing item, select the .vb project and say Add as Link.
But now my form is missing - I just have the code.
I have two classes MyPanel & MyForm. MyForm was first, MyPanel second. It says they should be the other way round. When I swap them I get the message "to add componets to your class, drag them from the toolbox...."

Sep 28, 2010I created a visual basic express edition project and when completed pressed Save All. Then proceded to work on another version and saved that one as well, Now the project cannot find the original version which is the only working one. Apr 28, 2010I'm sick of my EXE files only looking decent in one view in explorer (ie List or Tiles etc) because I can only figure out how to specify one icon file for my projects so it has to be a specific size and if its too big it looks rubbish at smaller sizes in explorer, and vice versa if its too small. So how can I embed more than one icon file and make it automatically select the correct one to display in explorer depending on the view? I believe you can store more than one icon in an ICO file, so do you have to just combine the various size icons into one ICO and then explorer will automatically select the correct sized on? Or is it something you have to do within the VB project?

Feb 19, 2009Just got a little quirk with VS2008 on 1 solution.When i press F5 to debug my solution builds the current project but then insists on building all my setup projects...
This only occurs on 1 of my solutions and it has 20 projects within it.
I've checked startup projects and it has no dependancies and is set to selected project.
EDIT: Right click and debug in new instance works fine

Feb 16, 2010I have been working on a project for some time now and I am stuck. I am trying to sense when a navigation software speaks so i can mute the volume of everything else on the computer.
my problem is that i cant properly sense the audio of the software. i am using windows 7 and vb.net. i have done a good amount of research, but i have not come up with an answer.
i am almost positive that i need to intercept the win32api call of the software to trigger the mute that i will use. i dont know how to do this, all the information i can find that is even close to this subject is for 98, nt and 2k.
does anyone know of any books (or websites) that contain information on this subject?
