VS 2005 Change Close Button Default Behavior?
Sep 17, 2009
I have a form with the FormBorderStyle set to SizeableToolWindow. The close button - 'x' in the upper right corner - sends a DialogResult of 'cancel' to the FormClosing event when clicked. How do I set it so that it will send an 'OK'? I tried setting the form's DialogResult to 'OK' in the New method, but that's not working. I checked my code and I'm not setting it anywhere that I can see.

In a base class object, I have an overridable subroutine that I would like all derived objects to have the ability to include. However, they don't have to, and if it's not necessary for them to use it, I don't want them to be forced to declare it. To enforce this, I've left the default behavior empty. For example, here's my whole sub:
Protected Overridable Sub MySubroutine(ByVal someObject As Object)
End Sub
Is this bad practice? I don't want to declare it as MustOverride, but I don't want default behavior. Is there a "better" way of doing this, or is this perfectly acceptable? I don't want to be that hack programmer...

I use the following line of code within a single method to explicitly check and trust an SSL cert from the following host: MyTrustedCompany.com:
ServicePointManager.ServerCertificateValidationCallback = Function(obj As [Object], certificate As X509Certificate, chain As X509Chain, errors As SslPolicyErrors) (certificate.Subject.Contains("CN=MyTrustedCompany.com"))
No problem with the code -> works perfectly 100%.
The problem is, it is too far reaching. I thought its scope would only be within the method I decalred it, but apparently it is a Shared property on the 'ServicePointManager' object, and must then persist for the entire application, which I do not want.
The problem is later I am calling web services of mine, etc and getting the "Could not establish a trust relationship..." exception. This is because in the line of code above I check for the host name of an SSL cert specefic to that method. I quickly tested Returning 'True' from the callback so all certs would be trusted instead of checking for a specefic name (i.e. MyTrustedCompany) and subsiquent requests worked. This is how I know this callback assignment reaches father than that single method. Sure I could extend the callback to include all other certitificate names, but what I would rather do is set the 'ServerCertificateValidationCallback' back to its default behavior. Like the pseudo code below:
ServicePointManager.ServerCertificateValidationCallback = Nothing 'Default checking behavior
How do I remove the custom validation and set it back to its default behavior?

I'm currently in the process of building a text editor type program, and have run into a brick wall. I haven't done VB in years, so I may just need a little reminder on some things. I have coded everything so far as far as opening files, saving them, changing fonts, colors, etc. However, I'm looking to add a Close button to my menu strip that will just close the currently opened file, and not the entire program, while also ask the user if he/she would like to save before closing the file, and then if they select yes, it will show the save dialog, and if not, it will go ahead and close the currently opened item.

I am trying to create a button behavior such that when you click the button it fires the click event as normal & runs the code under it. But if you click & hold the button for 1 second then it jumps to a different sub & runs some other code. I got my button working that way for the most part, using a timer & the mouse down & mouse up events. The only issue I have is that after the timer fires after 1 second & I execute my alternate code, the normal button click event still fires when I release the mouse button & runs that code. How can I cancel the normal click event so that only the alternate code runs when I click,

I'm using a SortedDictonary(Of String, String) in my application, and I experience a strange sorting behavior. Consider the following code example:[code]I would expect the keys to be sorted as "'A", "'B", "'C", "A", "B", "C", which is what you get when comparing the keys "by hand", through the < operator. And yet, iterating through the keys returns "A", "'A", "B", "'B", "C", "'C".How can I change the SortedDictionary behavior to sort the words beginning with ' first?

I am trying to load contents of an Excel file in a datagrid. The data in the Excel file is arranged in rows and columns. Every column has a column header. Now here is the anomaly. For some reason when I put a less than sign (<) before some of the values in the last column, the values become blank before they are loaded into the data grid. This behavior is not observed when the less than sign is put into the other columns. More strangely the values are retained in the datagrid even if the the < is put before the values of the first few rows of the last columns within the Excel file. I used the following code in loading data into the Excel file:
Dim con As OleDbConnection
Dim da As OleDbDataAdapter
Dim ds As New DataSet

I have a form containing a date textbox and a submit button and a close window button. The date textbox onblur calls a javascript function which checks for date validation and some other logic and displays some alert messages. The date on the textbox is always selected and onfocus. My problem is when I try to click the close window button with/without changing the date the alert messages from the onblur logic are displaying and I am unable to close the window. I tried using onchange instead of onblur but onchange too works when a control looses focus. it works fine when I donot change the date but when I change the date and hit the close window button it too displays the alert messages and the window does not close. Please suggest me what will be my best option.

The MaskedEditExtender control that I am using is set up for a MaskType="DateTime" and the AcceptAMPM="true" but I need to know how a user can change the am/pm without having to type in A for AM and P for PM? Is there a way I can add arrows or something to this control so that it is more user-friendly when changing from AM to PM? My users aren't going to know that they need to type out the value for it to change.
