plain how error handling scope works. What I mean by that is if I have a sub called ImportData and in there I have a for loop to go through a list of files and in the for loop I call another sub routine called CheckData. All have catch error in. If a sub has a catch error in where does it go from its call.
Private Sub ImportData
Dim iLoop as Int16
Try
[code].....

I have a for loop going through customers and for each customer a update a list of contacts. If there is an error updating the contacts I want it to move on to the next customer and if there is an error in the customer update I want it to move on to the next customer. At the moment if I get an error it bombs out of the routine. Here is a simple example:-
For iRows = 0 to oledscustomers.tables(0).rows.count - 1
For iContactRows = 0 to oledscontacts.tables(0).rows.count - 1
'make some changes in here.
Next
Update Contact Table
'Make changes to customer tables and save them.
Next
If I get errors in the contact for loop or the customer loop it comes out of the routine altogether. I just want it to either continue to the next contact or customer.

I have most of the obvious user error handled with code, limits to mubers on keypress, if statement in case of input blank left blank etc.. I realize though that are infinintepossibliltys the user can perform especially with the programI am trying to create it requires ALOT of user interaction, with users inputting information (numbers in textboxes) and calculations happen on the fly, in other words there is no Calculate button after everything is input

I have a report parameter which looks like this: 01.01.2009 00:00:00.Its a date (as string), as you might have guessed :). The problem is, this param can be an empty string as well. So I tried those expressions:
=IIf(IsDate(Parameters!DateTo.Value), CDate(Parameters!DateTo.Value), "")
=IIf(Len(Parameters!DateTo.Value) > 0, CDate(Parameters!DateTo.Value), "")
Both dont work and the value for the textfield where I print the expressions result is always #Error. As soon as I remove the CDate stuff, it works, but I have to use it. IS there another way to achieve that? What I want is to display nothing if its not a date or the date (format dd.mm.yyyy) if its a date.

I have a DataGridView to which I've set a list of objects to the DataSource. (I'm in VS 2005 using VB.) I created the DataGridView by creating a Data Source of type AssetIdentifier and dragging that Data Source onto my form. I want to update the DataGridView when the selection in either a combo box or another DataGridView changes. (Below I'm considering a click in another DataGridView.)
The following works:
Public Class dlgShowAssets
' class member variable
Private assetIdList As List(Of AssetIdentifier)
' pertinent subs and functions
Private Sub RefreshAssetIdentifierDataGridView()
[Code] .....
In this case, I always knew that assetIdList would have at least one element. I'd update the list, and reset the data source of the DataGridView to that list, and all was well. When I applied this to another situation, for which I couldn't guarantee that the list would have at least one element, things would work fine as long as I had at least one element in the list, but if the list became empty, the DataGridView threw System.IndexOutOfRangeException a number of times.
The rows in the DataGridView would not go away if I went from a non-zero number of elements to zero. I tried a workaround, which was to remove all of the elements, add one "dummy" element, and then re-bind the list to the control and it still didn't work. Also, following all of those exceptions, I'd get other similar exceptions when I hovered over the cells in the DataGridView. Some of the members of AssetIdentifier were "Nothing" but I fixed that in the constructor, and the exceptions still occur.

The problem is that if you never enter anything into a cell for a new row then that cell is never validated. This is a problem because I have columns that should not be null. I am doing the check in the row level validation and storing the information about which cells are empty that should not be empty. The row level validation works fine and the row level validation error indicator goes on,(red exclamation mark at the beginning of the row) but I also need a visual indicator on the individual cells that are in error.
I am thinking that setting the HasError property for the cells that are in error should cause them to display n error style (the default red border). Is there a way to this this either from XAML (perferably) or from code?Alternatively I could cause those cells to re-validate when the row editing is finished. Does anyone know how to do this?

I have an object, say Order where if an error occurs, it raises the ErrorOccurred event. If I'm running some code in say, the codebehind for a .aspx page with an public Order registered as WithEvents and I want to check to see if an error has occurred before I run more code, how do I do this? I can't simply check theOrder.ErrorOccurred. Do I have to create a local boolean flag that switches over in the event handler (OnErrorOccurred)?
Example:
Public WithEvents theOrder As New Order
Public Sub DoStuff()
theOrder.DoSomething()
If theOrder.ErrorOccurred Then

I'm making a custom control that needs to look like a Text Box but I can't Inherit Directly from text box since I need to add, Change and Override so many things that it would be more practical to just inherit Control and start new.
But now my question is: Is there an easy way to create the basic functionality of a Text Box like drawing the Text Box and handling input ?

What error handling should be used in VB.NET? Should one use the "On Error Goto ErrorHandler Exit Sub ErrHandler ... End Sub" pattern or should you use the "try {... } catch {...} finally {... }" pattern?

I started out with just one table called products but I had problems with doing an update; it said sql to complex which was because the product table had nearly 100 columns in. The products table consists of header information like product quality, colour etc. Then there are 3 blocks of columns which mainly consist of a size as being the column name and a quantity as being the value. I have put these in three seperate tables to get around the SQL update problem. My problem is what is the best way to code this. The tables link to the header table using an autonumber primary key.

A query concerning opening and saving a file.i have two commands, one the opens and another that saves [the same file].i'm using the StreamReader and StreamWriter methods.issue is this:if i comment out the open code, the save works fine.if i comment out the save code, the open works fine.if i let both run together, i get an error, usually with the save saying that the file could not be accessed. note, before anyone asks, i do close the file after saving or opening what could be the problem? open works fine, because it usually happens prior to the save, and then save process cannot access the file..?

Decimal type columns have Precision and Scale where the length of the integral part of the decimal would be Precision - Scale, if the Precision is 4 and the Scale is 2 then the integral part can only contain 2 digits (4-2). As such I will probably need a control that I could set how much it should accept on its integral part. In that regard I am not sure which control is best for such cases, I could try to make a usercontrol that will handle that but is there any other control out there that I could utilize for this purpose, intrinsic to .Net or a custom control out there? I could also just validate the data keyed-in but the above solution seem to be more user-friendly. Curiously, when databinding such Decimal type columns, how is it handled when the specified integral part exceeds the allowable size (Precision minus Scale)?

I am trying to create a ContextMenuStrip where I add a certain amount of ToolStripMenuItems based on how many columns are in a DataGridView via code. I am wondering, since I am creating all these ToolStripMenuItems in code, how would I handle the "CheckStateChanged" event on all of them separately? Or how can I figure out which one of those ToolStripMenuItems was clicked?
Here's a code example of what I mean:
Private Sub CreateCMS()
Dim CMS As New ContextMenuStrip
Dim TMS_Main As New ToolStripMenuItem

I am just doing a bit of error handling. I am just check to make sure that a user has selected an option within a combo box (named cbtitle1) and if option has not been selected throw an error message to tell the user.this if statement is within a save button which once a user click save this error checking runs first then if combo box has an option selected the save goes ahead else it throws an error.I can stop the save function OK but I wanted to put a error icon in with the message box but I get an error when I add it.[code]

Obviously error handling is a major factor in making a good application. If a error happens letting a user know what has gone wrong.But some times error handling may(i think) not be needed. Example.
Private Sub RemoveCheckedl()
Try
For Each Item As ListViewItem In lst.CheckedItems[code]....
also when error handling it's could to think about what type of errors could be made.
Catch ex As Exception
MessageBox.Show(ex.Message, "Error", MessageBoxButtons.OK, MessageBoxIcon.Error)
even though this catches the error and displays a msg, it may not be a great message for the user so he/she can understand.

I am working on an executable to load set of data into databases.I will be running it as a windows service. I will be doing several different checks to see if the fields exists in the incoming files. When i do the checks using if statements.I would like to stop processing when a major error occurs or when any thing is interrupted Like say windows crashed. I would like to create an error file with the error message in it for that particular file. I would be monitoring error folder everyday to check if there are any errors.

When debugging a program, instead of doing this on EVERY piece of code:
Try
MyFunction()
Catch ex as Exception
MsgBox(ex.Message)
End Try
Is there a way to apply that to everything error I encounter without writing it on every function/sub/etc?

Anyone has a quick and dirty sample coding to making this work? Currently, I have server, client with Interface object as intermediate object between the 2. If I declare events in the Interface, then Dim object on client side with "WithEvents", I'll get error when I reach this line:
vb
serverObj = CType(Activator.GetObject(GetType(InterfaceObj), szURI), GetType(InterfaceObj)
Having headaches looking for solutions.
