Is it possible to edit the memory of a Processes' module?
was wondering if it was possible to write/read from a programs memory inside of your visual basic 2008 application. I've done tons of research and "googled" everythingt to be able to read/write values of a running process from with my application.I did read somewhere that you can only read/write up to 4bytes in vb.net, That would be just perfect

View 3 RepliesHere is a complicated, but possibly dumb question concerning adding projects together in the IDE in order to increase performance and share memory at the same time.I have written two distinct exe's. The first exe (file processsor) operates using three timers to perform communication between a hardware OEM proprietary ComServer and file output from the second exe. The second exe (work generator) simply outputs files on hard disk so that the "file processor" can process the commands in the order given. The first exe was written as a "background processor" to the second exe in a stand-alone fashion. There is a need to communicate data between the first and second exe that is time sensitive. The ComServer called by the "file processor" only allows one port to for communication to the hardware device that is a USB. The "file processor" is capable of extracting the data required but the existing technologies, such as RPC, IPC are too slow and or full of pitfalls. Microsoft's Memory Manger has found it easier to create multiple instances of the proprietary ComServer and assign the needed memory to the calling routine so that it can "scoot" memory easily in the garbage collection feature of the operating system. What this does is cause the mullitple instances that are created to "gang up" on the device either slowing its performance down, or causing time outs. [The second process is a custom 3-D graphical CAD/CAM. The first process is a machine interface. Although hind-sight is 20-20, it seemed more ideal to write this background or file processor independantly, as then it could communicate with existing as well as a custom CAD/CAMs.]
Simply writing the first processes' code into the second slows down the second process as a result of all the timer interrupts looking for work to do. (Mouse is squirrely, screen refresh is slow, etc.) I am only guessing here that the operating system's service of the more complicated single memory location is somehow interrupted more frequently for a larger project, than two smaller independant projects running seperately. I only know what I observer here. Interestingly, the two smaller projects running seperately seem to run fine.
Now for the dumb question. Is it possible to merge the "file processor" with the "work generator" in the IDE such that each process runs as independantly as two distinct apps, but at the same time, make it possible to share memory via one Module1.vb? So far, I cannot find a way for the "file processor" to see the "work generator's" Module1.vb, regardless of how many PUBLIC statements I issue in the code. In other words, what would be the steps after File->Add-> Existing Project to cause the "file processor" project with a form to start first, then drop to the background, followed by launching of the "work generator" second where each process shares the same Module1.vb?.
If this could be done, say through a compiler statement, or whatever; then this could make the Memory Manger folks happy, and provide for the speed required to operate real world processes? Basic computer science suggests a simple processor LD instruction could make data available to any application within a few clock ticks. Microsoft now longer allows direct memory access, or the ability to carve out a "stay resident" dll in memory where a memory location can be called for quick distribution information to all apps with just one call to a device.

I have a program that is getting pretty big and it is a pain to find everything through all the functions and classes. I am trying to break it up into other files based on their method. Some of these functions have calls to others in the main class. I changed most my functions from private to public to access this. I had problems calling certain code created windows so importing mainwindow helped that. My last problem is editing the mainwindow ui from one of the module files. I want to make sure im on the right page before i continue breaking it up. My only guess is that anything they updates the ui should be left on the main class.

I cannot use Visual Basic 2008 at all. When I go to "new project" and choose "Windows Form Application" I get this error.I have tried multiple uninstall/reinstall with no result.A microsoft reply to this suggested that I needed: " .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 " I checked, and I did not have the .netframework 2.0 service Pack 1.
When I tried to download and install the above from Microsoft.com, the istaller said that "it was not allowsed" and I was not able to install the service pack 1.
I tried Uninstalling net framework 3.5, 3.0, 2.0 and then reinstalling .netframework 2.0 sevice pack 1; then reinstalling Visual basic 2008 express edition. At the reinstall of Visual basic 2008, .netframework 2.0 sevice pack 1 is unistalled by .net framework service pack 2.When I check the foruims for simiar problems, the formus are mostly for Visual basic 5.0, or other programs that I do not have.

But the trouble is that if multiple users are using the same terminal I cannot narrow down the process list to just the current user. So if two users run the same application simultaniously only the first user can open the application on the same terminal.

View 12 RepliesIm wondering if there is some way of monitoring individual processes (read: not mine) cpu usage and ending (asking politely then killing it off) the offending process. I dont know about you, but i've been in multiple instances where i've been unable to get to taskmanager to "choose" process to be killed. For multiple reasons (Either taskmanager has been visible, but a game window is still showing (alt+tab not working), leading to a guess game of clicking processes or cpu usage has been so high that one mouseclick takes 30 sec.)

For some time I've been trying to devise a system that would allow me to keep a large quantity of data stored in memory, which is to be accessed by a main process that I must start and stop a lot. I've tried using a virtual/RAM drive on which to store the data files to speed up data loading when starting the process, and also tried keeping the data in a windows service and using WCF for IPC between the main process and the service to access the data. Both those approaches were WAY too slow.Currently the main process stores the data in tables, and that serves my purposes well once the data is loaded. One thing that I'm wondering is if maybe it would be possible to "orphan" the DT objects by the main process and "adopt" them by the service when the main process is shut down, and do the opposite when the main process is restarted. That would obviously be pretty efficient.Is there any way of doing this in VB.Net without any non-managed code help?

However, I've decided to change it up a little bit and change the color of rows based on whether the process is owned by the User, if it's a System process, or if is a Service. I've already been able to determine if the process is a User process by utilizing the OpenProcessToken.

I've been searching in google for some time now and i've just found answers like "Resources are embedded in the exe so you can't retrieve the path" and other answers which are complicated and not even explained how to use the code. ~~However my problem is that i have a .txt resource file in my resources and i want to edit the content of the file so i triedIO.File.WriteAllText(My.Resources.MyTextFile, "some string")but that didn't work out since [My.Resources.MyTextFile] retrieves the content/value of the resource so what i want to do is edit the resource file simply, from within my application, not by going to My Project > Resources and from there, edit the file
View 1 RepliesNot sure if I'm posting this in the right area, but here goes anyway. I've been working with sql databases for practice, but can't seem to get around one thing; after I add it as a data source, I can't go back and add tables.
I start off by going through the project, then add item, choose the service-based database, and go from there. I add the tables, then go in and add it as a data source.
After I've added it as a data source, I can go back into the .mdf form and add lines and edit properties, but it wont update in the data sources. So, I can't add it to the form.
I must change the textbox value of a form a thread that is located on an other module. I've already tried with the CheckForIllegalCrossThreadCalls to False on the onLoad event of the textbox's form but it doesn't seems to work because everytime the thread executes the lines that should change the textbox value nothing happens at all (not even a warning). I really don't want to use that "safe cross threading" with delegates and stuff because it's too much trouble for me, I don't know how to use it and I just have one thread on my project and it's the only control that is accessing those textboxes.
