I have a process that recieves a request and issues a response. Sometimes createing the response is taking too long. I would like to start the request, and after 8 seconds, if the response has been created, I would abort the process and send back a generic message.

I want to quickly limit the time that someone can use my program and do it without licensing software for now. Can I use an If'Then statement to check to see if today's date is later that a date that Ihard type similar to this conceptually. I am using VB2008.

How can I limit the length of time an operation is allowed to take?
I have an external library that processes image files. I'm running it against thousands of images, and every now and then the library gets stuck on certain images. If I need to skip an image here or there, no problem, but I can't have the process get locked up, so I want to impose a maximum amount of time that the process is allowed to take for each image before I force it to give up and move on to the next image.
I want to set a time limit over openFileDialog window, if, for example, 10 seconds elapsed without any user input, it will be killed automatically, how to implement that.
View 11 RepliesMVC3 vb.net. In my app I have a point where 500+ emails with attachments are sent out using a for each loop to accomplish this.. Nothing is returned to the browser the entire time this is running so eventually the browser think it has timed out... I tried just having it redirect to another actionresult function after every email and that function just passes it back to the email function. This is not working and I feel the reason is that nothing is actually being sent to the browser window its self.. Is there a way to fix this issue??

Itemlists is a global lists i retrieved from database, everything looks fine to me but when i run this program, I found that the threads are inserting one records 9 times into the database(I have 9 threads in total), which makes me think that maybe i need to specifically assign 1/9 of a list to each thread? Is there another way to do it which doesn't require the splitting of the list, if not , how do i split it then assign?

Im not asking for the whole program, just something to get me started and hints along as i progress with it. Please help me get started on my program, its due in 2 days.
Here are the requirements....
1. The program must input any number of individual�s last and first names using two separate textboxes.
2. The array of names must be sorted by the last name using a bubble sort. You must code the sort.
3. The program must be able to recall the names from the file and add to the existing list of names so that more names can be added to, sorted, and written back to the file in sorted order.
4. Sort in ascending order: A to Z
5. All names must be displayed in a listbox in sorted order when the user wishes to see them.
6. In the listbox the last and first names must be separated by a comma and a space. Example: Smith, Mary
7. The user must be able to search for a name in the array, using the binary search algorithm. You must code the search.
8. Do not use module-level variables. Instead you may choose to use Static.

I have a Picturebox, where the .Tag property is holding a path to a file. But I would also like to have something like a .Tag2 property that could hold another file... View 5 RepliesI have a data bound datagridview on my form. I need the datagridview to sort by oldest date, and then return only the 150 oldest. The goal is to export the 150 rows with the oldest date to a .csv file and then update the date column to the current date for only those 150.

I can get it filter by the column "status" and then sort by "datelastemailed". I can also get it to export only those 150 to the .csv file. My issue is that I need only those 150 to have their date column updated to today's date and then saved to the database. The only way I can see to get that done is to set a max number of rows for my databound datagridview and then loop through each row in the date column. How I can create a filter that limits results?

Is there an easy way to read in a comma deliminated file in VB 2010. In VB 6.0 you could read the file in directly to variables. It appears this has been removed in 2010.
View 1 RepliesCause I just dont get whats going on here. I have a bunch of combo boxes linked to their own Tables in my database, 14 in total. My problem is that only 13 of them work and every one I add after 13 doesnt work for some reason.So I make a ComboBox, press the arrow in the upper right corner and click "Use Data Bound Items", Then I fill in the rest as it should be. But only the "Selected Value" function actually works. I can fill in data to my other tables manually through this ComboBox, but I can not view my Data Source! If I use the same ComboBox and use any other Table it works, but not anything past my 13th table. The BindingSource is there, so is the TableAdapter. If I preview a select quary to the database it works as it should. But for not in the ComboBox!
Its driving me mad, can someone explain to me what might be going on here?

I am loading a text file, that contains about 1100 lines, and each line is going to be processed with HTML Agility Pack. From what I can tell, when it runs "doc.loadhtml(richtextbox1)", it throws the error. I also have tried to load the file into a string, and load the string with "doc.loadhtml(thestring)". It doesn't make a difference, still errors.
Here are is a sample of how each line looks:

I am using HTML Agility Pack, however the above is what is on every line, about 1100 lines! For testing, I have a smaller text file made of about 50 lines before I load up the 1100 line file ;) There aren't any HTML, HEAD, or BODY tags! They aren't needed for my parsing. I am using HTML Agility Pack because it is easy to parse elements with. I can grab each value easily from each line.
I am not sure if maybe the error is because it technically isn't HTML? Meaning since the loaded code doesn't have an HTML or BODY tag, that it errors? I wanted to get this question posted, and while I am waiting on some answers, I am going to parse the document another way. Just curious as to what the deal is and why HTML Agility Pack isn't working. More of a proof of concept then anything, for my own learning and knowledge.

I have setup an application to parse about 3000 files a day where each contains around 4000-5000 posts in xml format with like 100 fields. It involves a lot of cleanup and parsing but on average it takes around 6 seconds per post. Now I tried threading but because of the way I have everything set up with variables being overwritten etc...I have divided the files into different folders and just created copies of the program to run and access the assigned folder. It is running on a windows 2008 server with 16 G of memory and I am told I need to reprogram to speed up the process and also not use so much memory.

i have a program im working on that has 68 different buttons on 1 form. each button opens a seperate form. each from opened from the buttons starts with "helmet_" i need a way to only allow one form with that starting name to be open at a time. otherwise you could open all 68 forms at once and that would cause issues.

For example the user enters 9 in here : "1300/90/00" i want to prevent this from happening before TextChanged event occur. (the place isn't important i just want to stop user from entering an invalid month or day)I have tried the KeyPress event but i don't know how to detect where in the textbox user is entering a character.
Note that i know already how to validate and i have a code for that but the TypeValidationCompleted event occur when user does all changes and leave the textbox.
So far I have code for a textbox that limits the value entered by a user to two value places. However, I would like to limit the value entered by a user to numerical values only. And to handle any exceptions that go along with it.

It's working fine, except that it allows the user to enter values too long for the database field. For example, I have a "name" field that is defined in the Sql-Server database as a varchar(50). Is there any way to limit that cell (column?) so that it only accepts 50 characters? Right now it lets them enter anything and throws an exception later.

3. Is it OK to write my code in the designer.vb file? I don't know why, but when I started writing my application it took me to the designer.vb instead of form1.vb code.
4. I've been working on an application for a week now, but suddenly I can no longer access my Design View(Shift-F7). All my codes are written on the [form name].Designer.vb. I can still view my codes but I cant access my form layout. On the solution explorer, my forms no longer have the 'form icon'. When i press Shift-F7 nothing happens. Right-clicking the form on the solution explorer doesn't show 'View Designer' option. How can I fix this?
