The problem I'm having is with the .close() event. Basically I've created the below code to prompt the user when closing the form they are currently viewing.

In my project, I want the abiliity to switch between forms without closing them. What is the best way to do this? I have a "Login Splash Form" that you sign into, and then a Main Menu Form opens in Full Screen. I want this form always to stay open with the ability to open up other forms from this main menu screen as needed.

I've made an app with vb 2010, which holds a mainform. On it is a menutoolstrip with button, when I click on that button a second form is opened on a second monitor and the button is being checked (different color).

When I click the button again, it is unchecked, but the form on the second monitor is still open, while it should be closed.

Switching Between Forms Lags Computer?

So the program I have is an overlay for a bit of software that has a main Video out. Whenever I go between forms the video freezes for a tiny bit but is noticeable. I am using the following to go between forms,

Form6.WindowState = FormWindowState.Maximized
Form6.Show()
Me.WindowState = FormWindowState.Minimized
Me.Hide()

Is there a better way to cause less work for the form, making there be no lag at all?

Switching Between Windows Forms A Few Unclear Instances [VB2010]

I am making a visual basic game. And in the game I have a few instances where I want to call open a window (let's save to save the user's preferences) from a form, then I want to go from that form to another one.

Example:

The user has completed the new game page. I have the users choices in a host of string, integer, and boolean variables. Now I want to use a generic saving screen I made with a progress bar. When I open up the saving box, I want to close or hide the new game setup menu (whichever I need to do). Then when it is done saving I want the Saving bar to return and cause the new game form to open the actual game form and close itself.

So I guess my question is this: What is a reliable(or correct) way to poll for a return in form to signal it to go ahead with execution?

Second:

This is similar to the first question. Instead of keeping the first form open when I use the saving form; is there a way I can save the name of a page I want the saving bar to go to once it's done?

I want the user to enter their prefered username before they start a new game for the first time. So I poll the saved username setting I have and if it equals "username" I want the Username entry form I made to pop up, but once it's done I want it to immediately call the new game screen. I also want to use this username entry form on the options screen so that the user can change their accepted name at anytime; but I want this screen to return back to the options screen.

What is the accept way to do this? Is it done through stacks? (form information -> stack : load new page : Do stuff: load stack value -> goto)

Finally:

Do I have to keep a window open (not close it) to access the variables that I have defined in it, and have stored values too? Does this apply to hiding too?

Close() Puts Forms Into Crazy Open/Close Loop?

In a program I'm working on, I want a "Loading..." dialog to close when it can't log in to a site using the username and password provided by the user. Basically, I have the code set up right because the function it is supposed to carry out when that occurs does work, but for some reason it ends up in some really weird stuff happening. In the Loading form, I have it set to do "Form1.Show()" and then "Me.Close()", assuming it would simply show the login form and then close the Loading form. However, when this happens, the Loading form closes, and then for only an instant Form1 shows, and then the Loading form shows and Form1 closes. This happens forever until I stop the debugging, and I can't seem to figure out why. Am I using the wrong method? What exactly does Me.Close() do anyways? All I want to do is close the form and open another

I have a situation where me.close() doesn't close the form. I have a form with a button with the code seen below. What happens when the button is clicked is the new form shows, but the original form(calling form) is still there. When I go into debug mode, I can see the me.close() execute, but nothing happens (calling form stays open). When I close the second form both forms close. If I comment out the call for the second form to open the first form closes without problem.

I am having a Web Page that looks like:

I am looking to prompt the user to save data when they close a form window in a winforms application. I can't figure out how to trigger the prompt to the user, should they click the red box at the top right corner of the form.

My application currently has a boolean flag, that is set to True on textchanged event. So I will only need to check for the boolean value in whatever event is trigger by the red box.

I have a data table a simplified version of which is represented below:

I have a default view which represents the whole table.

But I need also a different view which represents the summary of the same data.

In other words, I need grouped totals.

The question is - is it possible to accomplish by preparing a dataview for the datatable and assign it to the .DefaultView property (I need a user to be able to switch between detailed and summary views). Normally I always prepare views in a database but now I need to do it with DataTable and I simply have no experience of working with DataView class.

I am using about 5 different filesystemwatcher routines total. I am using the following

filewatch.NotifyFilter = NotifyFilters.CreationTime Or NotifyFilters.LastWrite
AddHandler filewatch.Created, AddressOf addfile
AddHandler filewatch.Changed, AddressOf addfile
filewatch.EnableRaisingEvents = True

However, there is one problem with it... whenever I open a file and change stuff, then close it without saving the changes, the events still fire. I am opening excel workbooks in code, then use xlsWB.Close(SaveChanges:=False) to close them, and the event still fires, where the file isn't really changed so it should not fire.

I am trying to close my application and I have coded on the form closing, form closed events to call an exit form which asks the user for confirmation to exit or not. All works fine. When I press the X button on the winform things act different. On the main form where I press the X btn I store some user ID data that I use throughout the app. If I press cancel on the exit form that data is lost from the main form and cannot be used afterwards. So if the user pressed by mistake the X btn and then presses cancel on the exit form the application loses some stored data and many functions stop working.

I am using a second form to add new items to this list directly into the database.When the second form closes I want to call the sub in my first form to refresh the list from the database.

For speed, I've decided to use temporary tables as the recordsource for a report. The problem occurs when I try and tidy up after the report is closed by trying to drop the temp table. Trying to do this using database.execute "DROP TABLE x" where x is the name of the temp table. Get a Run-time 3211 error that the table still has locks. I figured that any locks generated by the report would be dropped at least by the Deactivate event, but that doesn't seem to be the case. how to use a temp table in the report withot incurring an enduring table lock? The report is the sole user.

i have a problem with trying to get 2 forms to close at different times using a timer on each of the 2 forms.

This is my form layout:

Frm1 and Frm2 are identical to each other. FrmMain has 2 buttons on it. One button to call Frm1 and the other to call Frm2.Frm1 and Frm2 each has a timer. It counts down to 0 and then does a .close(). However, if i pause between clicking the second button they both seem to always disappears at the same time.I would do something like this...

Click on the first button (showing the Frm1 form)

wait about 10 secs...Click on the second button (showing the Frm2 form)they both are shown on screen...hen they both disappear at the same time.... which shouldn't happen since i clicked the Frm2 box 10 seconds AFTER Frm1... So Frm1 should hide before Frm2 does...but it does not.

I have two forms frmMain and frmNew, and one module modMain. In modMain I hold public variables which are needed for application. My question is how to open and close those two forms when needed? I ask this because if i set frmMain as startup form, then when closed, application will end, and one of those two forms will always be displayed. Also if I set frmNew as startup form, then when I close this form, application will also end. Is there a way to do this from module or something so my application won't end after closing and opening any of those two forms?

Using Events For Communication Between Forms

I am bringing back here the subject of the communication between forms. The reason for this is that in a recent discussion in this forum it was conclude that using the events for communication between forms was a good practice. In a first time, I want to say, and everybody should agree with this that no form should never access directly any value or control values that belong to another form. There are many reasons for this but the principal one can be seen in this example

IN FORM1:
TextBox1.Text="CrazyPennie"
Dim MyNane as string = Textbox1.text
With this code, Form1 will expect "MyName" to have the value "CrazyPennie".

But, if Form2 does access the directly the controls of Form1, it is possible for the value of MyName to be set to something else since Form2 can have changed the value of TextBox1.Text before the assignment by Form1 to MyName. Now, what is wrong about using the events for the communication? The problem is that an event is broadcasted throughout the entire application, so the conversations in between two forms are not private.

Look at this scenario:
You have 3 forms in an application that communicate with each other with events. It is then possible for Form3 to listen to a communication between Form1 and Form2. It is also possible for Form3 to make the error to believe that the message send by Form1 to Form2 was address to itself. In this case, Form3, following this message may take some action that should not have been done and that result in some undesirable repercussion throughout the application.

This code keep the communication in between 2 forms private so no other forms or class in the application can listen at it and accidentally take an undesirable action due to a mistake.

Events Transfering Values Between Forms?

I have a form set up that allows the user to do many things to manipulate items. One of the things they can do is replace an item with another. To do so, what I have them do is click the Replace button on the main form. This calls the show of a choose replacement form where there is a grid view containing the replacement options and a Replace and Cancel button. When the user selects a product from the grid, and clicks the replace button, I want the item's ID to be sent back to the main form to be used in the replacement sub.This is what I have:

The problem is the events don't seem to be reaching the main form. The replacement form closes, but Replace does not get called in the main form.
