Avoid Runtime Error When Writing A Number Into A Stringed Textbox?

Oct 16, 2010

I am trying to make a program in Visual Basic 2008 Express edition which have a textbox where the user can write information to search for in a simple database stored in the program-code.

What I would like is that when the user types a word, a string variable connected to that textbox.text will be treated as a string. BUT if the user types a number in the textbox, the textbox.text will be treated as an integer (for example a "Double")

How To Avoid Writing Common Code In Derived Class

Jun 28, 2010

I am trying to minimize my code writing. I have DBLayer base class that selects, inserts, updates and deletes records from database. I need only fieldlist and table name from each derived classes to perform the actions. I have defined static tablename, fieldnames in derived class. Currently I am defining next static functions in derived class for GeneralSelect [which selects all records], GeneralInsert[Which inserts a records], GeneralUpdate[Which updates records as per given id] and GeneralDelete[Which deletes a record of the given id]. The parameter and all functioning are same just the differece is the table name and fieldnames.

One DBLayer Class that performs database actions
Class DBLayer
Public shared function Query(byval SQL as string) as dataTable

[code]....

... same goes for all other table objects... If I have 20 database tables i have to write getdata method in all 20 class changing only the tablename so i would like to get ride of it. So in order to get ride of it what do i need to do?

Writing A File From Text Box Created At Runtime?

Apr 24, 2009

I want to make my save button save the contents of the text box on the selected tabpage to the open text file. I cannot think of how to do this, as the tabpages are created at runtime, and so do not have a global name. The write function is here (the ??????? is what I am unsure):

Private Sub SaveToolStripMenuItem_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles SaveToolStripMenuItem.Click
Dim fileWriter As StreamWriter

Asp.net - Avoid Error When No Results From Entity Query?

Mar 14, 2011

I have a simple Entity query:

Dim rhcexists = From p In dbContracts.Signatures _
Where p.StudentID = people_code_id _
And p.ContractType = "rhc" _
Order By p.ID Descending _
Select p

I then check whether one of the result values is more recent than six months ago using an if..then like so:

If rhcexists.First.SignatureDate > Date.Today.AddMonths(-6) Then End If

However, if there are no results returned this will return an error. Is there a way for me to tell it to act as if the date is older than six months if there is no value at all? e.g., could I in pseudo do something like:

If Exists(rhcexists.First.SignatureDate, Date.Today.AddMonths(-8)) > Date.Today.AddMonths(-6) Then End If

Get Line Number And Column Number Of Textbox

Mar 2, 2012

I'm doing a notepad project, just because, and in Ms's notepad there is an option for a statusstrip. I'm just having probems getting the line number and I know it's not called column number, more like selection start. When I do the selection start, it works, just not how I want it to like so:

[CODE...]

but when I use that, it acts funny. I have it in my textbox's.keydown event. So if I were to use the arrow keys to navigate around text then it gets thrown off very easily. How would I do this?

Runtime Error '-2147024894 (80070002)': Automation Error

Jan 4, 2012

i have created a com class library with vb.net. i have registered the dll with regasm. Then i imported and used it to a vb6 project. I have noticed that if i unregister the library and register it again then i get the following error:

Runtime error '-2147024894 (80070002)': Automation error.

In order to make the library usable again, i have to rebuilt the library with different ClassId, InterfaceId, EventsId at the classes and then register the new dll.

PS: it also does the same thing if i overwrite the registered file with the same file or if i rename its folder and then rename it back to its previous name. Rebuid and re-registered is needed.

.Net - Writing To Textfile From A Textbox?

Nov 7, 2010

just another little problem here! Trying to write a quiz for a college portfolio and having trouble with writing to a .txt textfile. On one form(form4.vb), I have a listbox that picks up the information held within a notepad textfile called "usernames" which contains names of quiz users. When written in manually to this textfile, my listbox picks it up fine, however, on a different form(form3.vb), I have a textbox where a user inputs their name, this is supposed to go to the "usernames.txt" textfile to be picked up by the listbox on the other form but instead, it does not write anything at all and if there is already text on this textfile, it wipes it all out.I also have to use the application.startup path instead of the usual C:my documentents etc so i would have to begin with something like this: (Note: code is a little mixed up due to messing around with different variations but this is just a example)

Adding Arbitrary Number Of Controls In Loop At Runtime

Jul 12, 2009

How do you add an arbitrary number of controls to a form at run time? With indexed controls I could define the 'seed' control at design time and reference 'clones' of the 'seed' control at run time via the index. Now I must declare each additional instance of the control at run time then set each individual property that differs from the default for that control for each instance. Then I must add the newly declared control to the appropriate container controls collection. I'd like to do this in a loop but how can I get away from using a fixed control name in the declaration:

Dim controlname As New Control

I can't use a string that I can manipulate the contents of for controlname because it sees it as a double declaration. I can't use an array such as Control(index) for controlname. Dim Control(maxindex) As New Control doesn't work. Dim Control(maxindex) As Control works but any assignment based on this such as Control(indexvalue).Name = "ControlName" fails. It didn't address the issue of handling the declaration of new controls in a loop with some kind of variable name for the control.
