C# - Different Application Settings Depending On Configuration Mode
Jun 22, 2010
Is anyone aware of a way that I can set application (or user) level settings in a .Net application that are conditional on the applications current development mode? IE: Debug/Release To be more specific, I have a url reference to my webservices held in my application settings. During release mode I would like those settings to point to [URL] during debug mode I would love those settings to be [URL]

I have a custom control that as a custom property. The property has several preset values to chose from a drop down. The control can be added to a form. The property can be viewed and set in the properties box in the IDE. It all works fine.
Here's the problem: I can create new versions and recompile the control and/or the application without the properties preset value being lost as long as I do it in Debug mode. However, once I try to recompile in Release mode the custom property values predefined setting is lost. I first thought it was something with going from debug mode to release mode. But it seems to be ANY time I recompile in Release mode the custom property values are lost. Is this a quirk in VS that needs a configuration setting, etc. to get around it?

From my DLL project I have succeded in making AutoCAD launch by pressing F5 from VB.net IDE (Visual Studio 2008) en route to try to make debugging of the DLL easier ...
... however one last obstacle is currently in the way and the obstacle is that for some reason when I hit F5 and AutoCAD is launched my breakpoints are not recognized at all... and program runs from start to finish instead of allowing me to debug ...
It issues a strange message which says "The following module was built either with optimizations enabled or without debug information... to debug this module, change its project build configuration to Debug mode..." and it is all weird because as far as I know I am not in release mode .. but in debug mode (anyhow I am relatively new to Visual Studio .NET so I am thinking that my impression could be that I am in debug mode when in actuality I maybe in release mode)...
Here is why I think I am debug mode ...
1. From Solution explorer ... when I click on the Solution Name and view its properties ... the Active config property says Debug|Any CPU
2. When I look at the properties of the project and look at the compile tab it says that the Configuration is Active (Debug) and under Platform it says Active (Any CPU).
3. Under the Advanced Compile Options of Compile Tab from project properties ... Enable optimizations is UNchecked ...
Anyhow with all the settings mentioned above it seems that I have everything okay but then the message above proves otherwise ... and so at this point I know that I am still missing something ... like a setting somewhere... wondering what else do you think am I still missing?
As additional info...there are seven projects in the solution and it is the main one (the one that I set as startup project) whose properties I refer to in all the paragraphs above.

we have several applications in Vb.Net using the built in log system (My.Log) to write log information. Until now this system was configured by the application.config file before execution but now we want to let the user to choose some options.
Is there a way that does not requires to parse the XML file and process it? Is there available something like My.Settings that will do the dirty job done?
An example would be to be able to modify the DefaultSwitch value from Verbose to Warning or changing a property of the FileLog like the maxFiles attribute:
<switches>
<add name="DefaultSwitch" value="Verbose" />
</switches>
<sharedListeners>

Every .NET project I've worked on uses an app.config file for its configuration. Fair enough. "is there a better way?" (in the spirit of continual learning of course)I guess my specific questions are:
Does it matter either way if I use app.config or settings file?Are there any scenarios where settings files should not be used e.g web sites where you should use a web.config instead?Other than not having to edit xml, are there any other benefits gained by using settings instead of app.config, e.g. its easier to deploy or maintain apps etc.
Clarification: I'll put this question another way: Can I completely ignore app.config files if I want to and keep all the configuration in a settings.cs file and interact with configuration via the designer only?

I am writing a program to automatically switch my proxy address based on the network I am connected to.
I have so far got everything to work except the part that I have highlighted below.
Is there any way to change the automatic configuration script and the automatically detect settings in code?
The solution can be either P/Invoke registry editing. I just need something that works.

why when I use My.Settings to Add items during design mode, they do not show up during run mode?
This is for a custom control.
I'm missing something between the control that exists on a Form during design-mode and the (apparently new) control that's created during run mode.
I can add items in design mode using the Application Settings editor (right-click on custom control, select Properties then Settings). But when I use code in a smart panel during design-mode along with My.Settings.MyProperty.Add() to add additional items, the new items show-up in design mode but revert back to the old set during run-mode.

I just wondered if you can or can't save arrays using the settings system object. There seems to be no way of entering it at designtime. It seems implied you cannot create new user settings.subobjects at runtime. I'm looking to find the easiest way to save a populated array of PictureBox's. If the only way is a self/custom made/managed .ini file then I need to know so i can start on that but I was hoping to use some of all this phaff in the new frameworks usefully.

i have created a user setting named 'setmeup' as string, scope = user, value = "magical meow meow!".in my code i access it and assign it a new value like this...my.settings.setmeup = "howdy cowboy!"my.settings.save()application.restart()when the application restarts, i expect the my.settings.setmeup = "howdy cowboy!" but when i check its contents its still "magical meow meow!".but when i use application.exit() instead of application.restart() and manually restart the program, my.settings.setmeup = "howdy cowboy!" which is correct.what must i do? i want to use application.restart() because i don't want the users to double-click the icon again to start the program. i want the program to restart automatically.

On the compile tab of the project properties: If you look at the configuration dropdown it typically shows debug/release/active/all. I attempted to add another option at one point in the build->configuration manager window, but decided that I didn't want to keep it. I removed it there, but it keeps showing up in the dropdown on the properties, as well as generates a folder by that name.
Does anyone know how to remove this? I can't find any "delete" or otherwise options.

Does anyone have or has anyone come across an in depth guide to the .net app.config? I'm having significant issues trying to find a definitive guide to this area of .net.I can already handle custom configuration sections, from basic key/value pair settings right through to complete custom configuration handlers which I struggled to find information on, but I cannot find any documentation regarding basic native .NET functionality of the configuration file...for instance, with regards to BCL configuration. I've gone through the machine.config.comments and the config.xsd files and it has provided a little insight but not enough to fully grasp the full potential of the config file. I've also trawled through everything I can find on Safari and only managed to come up with a couple of useful tidbits that I wasn't previously aware of but it seems this area of .NET is extremely poorly documented and unless you have a very specific purpose in mind, it's useless trying to find information on it.

So where can I store configuration settings? For example, this is an app that will get deployed to various clients. I want to store the client name used for display in the headers and such. And the location of a logo file.
