These subs and functions are typically called from a form, e.g. by pressing a button. The command is then sent to a device attached to the serial port, and this device replies with a number of bytes as a result. I am making an application which has a form that I have set a notify icon for, I load this form at startup and then hide it. Then I have another form that the user can load (from the notify icon) which loads and runs a sub on another thread using the following

When this is executed another notifyicon appears, and then when the form closes it stays. I also notice that the memory usage remains higher than when the form loads. How do I prevent this, I am not sure but I believe that by creating the new thread it recreates the initial form and then it is not destroyed.

View 2 RepliesSimply saying I've added an Notify Icon to my project and then added context menu showing up when the left mouse button is pressed. The problem is that with the context menu some blank form is showing in the taskbar. There is no such form within the project.Does anyone know why it may be happening or how to get rid of the effect? I might add that I have other context menu attached for mouse right click button and it works fine, no blank forms and such showing on the taskbar it's just the left mouse button that works that way.Here is the code that I am using to show the menu:(the visible state to false is necessary for the other menus not to pop up with the one i want... unless anyone knows better method)

I have set up a notify icon for my form. I want to make it so that when the user clicks the close button that it doesn't close the form it just takes it to shows the notify icon. They can exit the program from the notify icon. Can someone tell me how to keep it running?

Operators can check multiple accounts at one time using the web interface. I am trying to get information to be pulled out of a database and show in text boxes on another form (frmviewsdets). The error occurs when it gets to the line frmviewsdets.txtsnumber.Text = rdr("StudentNumber") and even when a breakpoint is applied there it just moves on to the next and so on.
I have tried to show frmviewsdets before I pull the data out of the database beut I get the same message.
I have a solution with several Projects in it. There is a Windows App project (called ImportClient), and a Class Library (Import.Library). The Import.Library has functions to perform data imports (I have other applications in the solution that also need to call it). But the interactive application, I want to be able to pass in some form controls, and have it update the GUI. No problem. But, I also want to execute a DoEvents() so that the loop execution doesn't hang other interaction to the app.
So, ImportClient has a reference to Import.Library. But I can't add a reference to ImportClient to the Import.Library, because the compiler complains about circular reference, etc. I don't know how else to define the My.Application object of ImportClient as a parameter to the data function in ImportLibrary.
(I realize this is a dumb question - problem is, for this project I have a tight timeline, and haven't learned how to do the BackgroundWorker process. If you think I could pick it up quickly, I'm open to some hints about how to update the progress bar on the GUI, and how to pause / cancel the background task.)

At this point, objfrmExample is now instantiated, even though I've not done a "objfrmExpample = new [what-goes-here?] " and I'm curious as to why.I could possibly guess that because you cannot instantiate an interface variable, then vb.net automatically creates an instance. But thats just a guess. The question is , what is meant by declaring a variable of type Interface, and how does it work?

I have a problem in timers, I want to display 2 forms each one after 3 and 5, how to do that? I mean when the first form appears, after 3 seconds another one will appear, then after 5 seconds the second will appear. I have a code where someone gave me here but its for message box only, thus I modify it to put a form still does not work. Here the code I put in the timer below:

I still have problem when the message box stops, it displays all the forms together. All I want is when the message box stops, then it display the first form then stop to display the second then stop to display the last. The first form must stay for 3 seconds on the screen, then after 3 seconds the second appears then after 5 seconds the last appears.

View 11 RepliesI made a small app that uses a hidden form and shows a notify icon to do some things with, strange thing is that the notify icon is not visible. I changed the opacity of the form back to 100% to make sure the form is open and it is. I also step through the code to make sure it was executing and it is. I also published the single form app and installed it on another machine and the same problem exist as the debug machine.
I made another test app with only a form and a notify icon and in the load event of the form, I put the same code minus the if statement and still no notify icon.Is this a bug in VS08 Pro?Heres my code

I use VB9 in Visual Studio 2008, and I've written a program that includes a notify icon.
I have both the balloon title and text set up with the text that I want displayed but it doesn't seem to work (on this or another test machine).
When the program first starts, the balloon appears in the system tray, then quickly disappears.
