I've come across what may be a rather idiotic question but my understanding of codecs is extremely limited. I'm attempting to create a VB.Net media player, either using the Media Player COM component or by doing grunt work by myself. What's been bothering me is Codec's. Will both players automatically use an installed codec when trying to play an ".mkv" (just for example). Or will I need to interface the application with the codec.

View 3 RepliesI have a AVI program that uses no ocx, controls or api but I would like to support codecs. Is there anyway to send the parsed raw frame compressed stream data from an avi to a codec's dll that i found from the FourCC in the system registry and have it return a DIB or some type of image that i can display?
I already can display images from a uncompressed avi (although only by writing the raw data to the hard drive with a custom header file and then loading the bitmap, because the DIB is backwards and RGB is flipped) and extract the audio sources to the hard drive with a header if its wav. Also I can display subtitles from srt files (cause they are easier to read) using a custom alphabet bitmap image I made.
even if you only know what this is called or have a link to a rfc that would be nice.I would guess there is some sort of standardization of calling codecs and ive tried looking at the source code of some codecs but im not very good at C languages.how to flip that raw data so that it can be displayed by a bitblt without running thru each pixel so its fast enough to display, cause i cant get it over about 26 fps going thru the hard drive.
Is there a way that I can play MP3 files in my program without using the Windows Media Player codec that still allows to play/pause and stop the music?

I have sorted out the navigating to a form using the [Next] button but am struggling with the previous button.

In my application, the user can create a word document from a word template with dynamically added text and data to it. This happens on a backgroundworker so that the application doesn't hang during the process. This all works fine and the word document opens correctly when finished. Now if the user leaves the application to do something else, in most cases when they come back to it, it has frozen. It's still responding/running in task manager but the interface is frozen. In debug mode, it never freezes and so I can't catch the exact moment when the freeze occurs. My backgroundworker is disposed of when complete and I close everything related to the word object.

XP it doesn't look very nice. I found some similar threads on the internet but no answers. Does anyone know how to display maximized windows in MDI properly? [Code] On Vista the child-form switch/appear really smoothly. On XP you can see as they are being maximized.

When the user clicks on a Menu Item i want the container to show some controls, now when the user clicks another Menu Item, the container needs to change and show other controls, and so on with every menu Item the user clicks, one at a time.
I thought of panels showing and hiding for every menu Item clicking, but that would use a lot of memory as ALL the controls would be created, some of them just not showing. I also though of an MDI application, but i dont want multiple forms (with the menu bar) opening inside one form. I just want the actual container of one form to change.
I am creating an application with mlutiple forms. When you click on a button in the main menu, the main menu will close and the new window will be diplayed. When you hit back on the new window, the main menu will be displayed.I know how to show new forms by using Form1.Show(). When I try to return to the main menu by hitting a back button I created, the main menu does not show up, but the program continues running. I have a legacy application that has an interactive graphical user interface, but also periodically checks for files in a directory and reacts to the files. I want to launch the application from a VB program, but not see the GUI (i.e., just let the file interface do it's thing). I really don't want to see the application running on the desktop at all (e.g., no windows, nothing on taskbar), the only evidence would be if I checked task manager I'd see it running.
Obviously this app would be ideally a service, but that's not where we are and I can't change it so I'm trying to simply not see the GUI.
I've seen the ProcessStartInfo.CreateNoWindow and WindowStyle = hidden flags but they don't hide the GUI of the legacy app.
again launch the legacy app (actually an unmanaged C++/MFC app) from a VB managed admin app.

View 1 RepliesI am trying to create an interface between a third party application which can make use of C/C++ DLLs, but no interface directly to .NET. What I was hoping to accomplish (not sure if possible though), is create a very basic C++ DLL (not .NET), which the third party application would call directly. This DLL would contain a basic method such as "DoSomething()". Somehow, from my .NET application, I want to "listen" to this DLL and "takeover" the DoSomething() method, and then returning the result back to the DLL, which will in turn return the result back to the calling third party application.
I don't even know if this is possible because I'm sure I would somehow have to get a hold of the memory space of the DLL as initiated by the third party application. Also, it seems that creating a managed DLL does not work, based on feedback from other individuals who have tried this.

I am developing an application for an emergency services organisation using VB 2008 that will enable users to select a map zone of a city centre and plot icons onto it, then save/export the layered map with icons as an image.My problem at the moment is that I am struggling developing the point where the user imports in the icon (for example, a flame icon where a fire started) and drags it around the map within the picture box to the required area.I want them to be able to select their desired icon from a series of commandbuttons and for the icon to 'appear' on the picturebox and be enabled to be dragged around and dropped as required. The organisation already has such a thing working in Microsoft Word (!) and that uses the ActiveDocument.Shape.LoadImage function on a pushbutton to import the icon and then it is placed on the map as required, but this is really unreliable for them.I dont even know if you can layer images onto an existin picturebox within an application in this way and then export as a flat image.
View 3 RepliesI'm in the process of developing an application to keep track of employee's shifts. the top of the grid should display the days, the left side the employee name. The grid will display the type of shift (N for night, D for day) I just need some direction as to how to develop the calendar grid...I have a database with all the required information (I have a "Shifts" table, which contains the employee name, the date of shift, and the type of shift). Times are not relevant since employees will be either working a night or day shift (type of shift). I'm using VB9 for this project.

Both of them are images to scale. View 4 RepliesI'm trying to make a .dll that contains a lot of basic functionality that a program can use. Currently i am trying to use interfaces to make a lot of this functionallity independend of the program using it but i hit a snag. The Basic idea is that a programmer will create his own object using the interface discribed in my .DLL file. Then implements those functions as he likes. He can then instanciate a controller (found in the same DLL) and sends his custom object implementing the interface to that Controller. The controller can then be started and will take over all the work. I do not know what type of object is send to the controller and idealy i want to program it in such a fashion that i shouldn't care as long as the object send implements that interface.In code I am trying to achieve the following: (quite simplyfied)

this propperly. I know that the second i set the interface adaptor in the Controller VS comes nagging that it can not be converted to a "MyInterface" Class. Obviously i am doing something wrong. I can change the datatype that the controller expects to the "MyController" type but that would completely ruin the whole idea of flexibillity. I am hoping someone sees what i am trying to do and can point out where i made the thinking error.
Is this where i would post a picture of my interface and get feedback on changes for easier use? If not is there someplace on this forum or any other forum to do this?

It pretty much became obsolete and replaced with the Interface INewFoo with a change a few weeks ago, but for backwards-compatibility purposes, i wrote a wrapper class which implements INewFoo and takes an IFoo in the constructor.To clarify, consider the following code.

For both interfaces, the implementations are loaded by scanning a few assemblies with StructureMap. Now, let's get to the bad things. Most implementations for the old interface were put into forms for reason i can neither understand nor change. Because those tend to be displayed and disposed, i have to create a new instance every time i use ObjectFactory.GetAllInstances(Of IFoo). Thats still no problem, but i'd like to register a INewFoo-Wrapper for each registered implementation of IFoo, so that i can just use ObjectFactory.GetAllInstances(of INewFoo) and get all implementations of IFoo AND INewFoo.I can't iterate through the implementations of IFoo and register a wrapper for each one because as far as i can see, you can just register those with instances.Wrong code below:
