I'm trying to figure out how to resize a form on load to fit to the user's screen. Many of my users are on laptops, or split screens between laptop and monitor..I remember in VB6, it was something like form.height = screen.height (or something of the sort)... but I can't find this functionality in VB.NET 2008. I'm also trying to wrap everything (multiple screens/forms) into one app, so I wanted to know if anyone was aware of any tutorials on form parent/child relationships... I don't want to keep opening and hiding forms individually without having them packaged in one work area....

I'm setting form sizes according to user screen resolution and I think I need design no smaller than 1024 x 768 these days. Using the following code I set my first form and use Anchor settings to resize and maintain controls. Does resize affect StartupPosition in other forms and what do you think is the best StartupPosition to Show the next (smaller) forms? I have a feeling I should have created child forms but simply added forms to the project as I needed them. For example, the first code example does not take account of the WIN7 Task Bar.
HTML
Dim x As Integer = My.Computer.Screen.Bounds.Width, y = My.Computer.Screen.Bounds.Height
Me.Size = New Size(x, y)
A smaller form loads with the same code slightly varied, but the reduction is not taking account of the screen resolution. Is there a way of reducing by percentage?
HTML
Dim x As Integer = My.Computer.Screen.Bounds.Width, y = My.Computer.Screen.Bounds.Height
X = X -100
y = y - 100
Me.Size = New Size(x, y)

I am creating an application for a company and this CD will be distributed to hundreds of people. Many users will have different computer screen size and different screen settings such as their resolution set to 1024 x 728 and their monitor size 17" inches.
I noticed when I loaded the application on a different computer with different settings the application was to big for the screen and did not work. I notice that lot of other programs from microsoft resize their controls and text but never knew how they did it. How can I resize the form and control according to the user's setting.

An order can have many OrderDetails, and a Product can be on many different orders. The OrderDetail table just has the OrderID and productID, so there is essentially a many-to-many between order and product).I have a form for the user to enter a new order. I want to have an unbound box that contains the names of all the products, and to be able to drag these names into a box under the order, to add a new OrderDetail record using the productID of the dragged order along with our orderID.

BTW this issue occurs in any MS office program when the VB.Net (or even VBA) is processing information.Example: In Excel, a worksheet is displayed on the screen. I start either, a VB.Net or VBA procedure and within 30 seconds the Excel worksheet (previously displayed) blanks out. In both VB.Net and VBA,ScreenUpdating = False. My expectation is that the previously displayed screen would stay static as if I left my desk to get a cup of coffee; came back and the same ole Excel worksheet was still there?Of course, setting VBA Screen Updating = False accomplishes two goals: 1) speeds up processing and 2) saves the user from seeing unnecessary "garbage-processing" steps.Why does VBA or VB.Net ScreenUpdating = False not freeze the screen at the time of its invoking?

I want that my application will have a splash screen - thats easy. The problem is that I want to give the user the ability to disable the splash screen if he wants. If I set this in the application splash screen settings then there is a splash screen,but there is no way the user can disable it. If I do it without a real splash screen - with a timer that closes the form and opens the real main window - the application closes itself because of the setting "Shutdown application: When startup form closes".I just can't choose the second setting (when last window closes).

This IS a project for the class. HOWEVER, this class is *NOT* a programming class, but is called "Usability Engineering", which aims its goals at creating a better user interaction. I'm not sure of what the "homework" policy is here, but what I am asking isn't for getting a grade, as the grade isn't based on my ability to program here. But nonetheless I am a C++ programmer at heart and VB makes me groan a little bit.
^ The program: Our goal with this project is to make a program with only five buttons (Aiming to be a cellphone type system, I know, the resolution is huge.), The buttons are the arrow keys, and enter. When the user selects a textbox, it changes the focus to the keyboard and then allows input via moving around and hitting enter.
My first problem right now, is that when I use my arrow keys, if I press RIGHT or DOWN, it will only go right, and if i press left or up, it only goes left.
The second problem, is that the buttons are out of order... when I am on "P", and press right, it actually hops down to the space bar button instead. I'm sure this is just some sort of container that can be modified, but I'm unsure of where it is.

So I'm trying to take a screen capture of the windows form and display only a certain specified area of that screen capture in a picturebox on a different form. Kind of like this. First, take the screen capture of the form: Then get a specified area of that form through x,y coordinates or something and display it on a picturebox on a separate form.

I have read that VB .NET in earlier versions limited the FORM size to that of the development machine screen resolution.I am hoping that there is a way in the current VB 2010 to get around that.However in my attempts to make the form larger, it always resets itself to the screen height on my develoment machine.Is there a way to get around this and have the person be able to use a scroll bar to move down?The data I wish to show actually has two screens worth of information but the stuff in the scroll down section would be used on a limitied basis so scrolling will be useful rather than having to recreat the screen to show less data at one time.

FormA calls DialogB where user cancels DialogB which exits via ForceTermination(), see insert.Caller FormA check for DialogResult not = OK, which it isn't, and I can see this in debug as Abort(3).However, the code continues merrily along its way until I get a 'null reference' error which I'm trying to avoid via Force Termination().This is caused by the user cancelling DialogB, a selection process to get a database (SQL) instance.[code]

After running the following code (which locks the computer), what code must I be applying to see if the user has successfully logged into the computer and that "Lock Screen" I'd so called has disappeared?
Private Declare Function LockWorkStation Lib "user32.dll" () As Long
Private Function LockComputer()
LockWorkStation()
End Function
I will call "LockComputer", after that what do I do to see if the Lock screen so called by this function (after say 2 minutes) has disappeared or is still there asking for the password from the user.

I have a program written in VB 2010 express under windows xp which does some heavy number crunching combined with serial communication. When it "gets too busy" it does not update the screen anymore (done simply with Textbox.text = "any text") and it does not respond to user input in any text box. Not even to a click on any text box. Is there a way I can get the program to do screen update and respond to user input while it is busy?

I have a project (Written in Visual Basic, using Visual Studio 2005) which has several user controls. I have had no problem setting it up where you click a button and it load a user control, but I cannot get it to remove the control that is currently open. For example The program opens on a starts screen, which has the choices, Control1, Control2, and exit. When you click Control1 button it should open up a screen to display an inventory. It does this just fine, but it does not close the main menu screen.
Here is the code for the initial startup of the project:
Public Class Form4
Public Sub Form4Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
Dim CtrlMain As New ControlMain()
With CtrlMain
.Location = New Point(0, 0

I am new to VB and seeking to create a visual basic program which controls the display of several on-screen elements depending on a single value input by a user. The user can enter anyone of 2500 values and depending on the value entered, five different display elements on the screen will change color or text. The program's response to a given input value never changes, in other words if the user enters 279, the five different display items will always be the same. However, there is no real pattern to the display items that would allow for programming an anticipated response to the input value.
My thinking is to create a large and ponderous "lookup table" in visual basic - I am assuming this an be done but perhaps there is a different or better method. I plan on creating the lookup file in Excel but was assuming I'd need to export it to something that VB could easily read. Any suggestions on the best way to do this? Does the lookup table reside as a separate .txt files someplace or something like that? [Code]

I want to disallow changes to two comboboxes unless the user first clicks a LOCK symbol on the screen. I pop a Y or N into the tag of the picture box when they click it...I've got this - combobox is called LanguageTo
Private Sub LanguageTo_Enter(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles LanguageTo.Enter
If Me.languageLock.Tag.ToString = "Y" Then
MessageBox.Show("Click LOCK symbol to allow changes to the Language Pair!", "Language is Locked!", MessageBoxButtons.OK, MessageBoxIcon.Exclamation)
[code]....
How do I "cancel" the attempt to change that combobox?I don't want to ENABLE=FALSE the combobox - as I don't want it's image to visually change. I want to allow them to attempt the change and then abort it if they didn't unlock first.

I've run into a little problem recently. My computer has two screens sitting side-by-side.
Here are the dimensions for my first screen: {X = 0 Y = 0 Width = 1280 Height = 1024}
Here are the dimensions for my second screen: {X = 1280 Y = 0 Width = 1280 Height = 1024}
My form saves its position on exit into the Registry. Whenever I start my application, I set its opacity to 0 in the constructor and it goes to my first screen. While its opacity is at 0, I then move it to its previous location (1280, 0) like this:
thisForm.Left = X
thisForm.Top = Y
Where X = 1028 and Y = 0.
I place a breakpoint directly in front of those assignments and when I hover over thisForm.Left, it = -4. Whenever I hover over thisForm.Top, it = -4.
Sure enough, when my form comes up, it's in my first screen.
For those interested, I've now worked around it, by doing some additional testing. What caused it: My Window State was Maximized. Solution: If before I set these positions, I change my Window State to Normal, the form moves. I can then maximize it while it's on the second screen and it remains there. why I can't move my form while it's maximized? It's more for curiosity than to find a solution, since the work-around is actually working quite well.

I know that when you are working in vb.net, you are using forms, so in conclusion you will have an application with multi-windows. My questions is next: How you can do it, to have all the application screen in a main form. I have an application which assists me to manage the products and the customers. Normally with the forms, if I press on: Add new customer or Add a new product, I will have a new windows pop-uped. I want to have both on the same form. When I press on new custom to see the specific screen and when I press on the new product to see its screen. I tried now using panels and tableLayoutPanels using the property visible, but I'm sure it is not the best way to do it.
