I'm looking forward to reading and adding more to the community here. I've created a text based rpg. Next semester we are learning Visual Basic. I'm on winter break and I would like to get a head start on my learning. I've been working on creating some forms and message boxes. What is throwing me off, is that I have a good feel for doing coding so that I get functionality the will produce effects in a console. Coding the forms is a bit confusing for me. Is this something that others have run into? Is their some good primers for VB? I don't have my text books yet.
View 10 RepliesI'm having a little trouble creating a game of pairs as a project.Basically I've got to the point where I can start a game, layout a bunch of cards in a grid, 6x6, and then have a way of matching the pairs together. First of all I used a For loop to assign the cards into a two dimensional array. They are pictureboxes however so when a user clicks on 2 cards, checking them to see if they match has become confusing. I've tried to stuff like this for example but it's not working: [code] This doesn't work because it can't compare the picture boxes stored to the array slot. Is there any clever person with a way around this? Or that can think of a way to compare them. The pictureboxes kinda need to stay like there though :/
View 2 Replieswell until a few day ago. I don't know what I have introduced to cause the problem but now, whenever I load the project, VS 2010 (SP1) crahes. If I delete the project's suo file, the project loads (really quickly) and all is well until I exitVS 2010. When I re-run it and try to load the project, it crashes again unless I delete the suo file. The program can be built for x64 and x86. Now, when I reload the project (after deleting the suo file), it comes up in Debug - Any CPU mode. I can change from Debug to Release and from Any CPU to x86 but if I try and change from x86 to x64, VS 2010 crashes. This is not always the case though. If I build the x86 version and then switch to x64, all is well and I can build the x64 version. Obviously, there's something wonky going on.

View 1 RepliesI was wondering is it possible to put forms into a class library project and if so could I use those forms as an mdi child from my main forms app?A bit behind what I am trying to do:I am creating a game which is essentially going to have its own 'operating system' As the user progresses in the game they can 'install' new software into their operating system.I have my 'Desktop' that is an MDI Parent and what I want the users to be able to do it when they have purchased a new bit of software (also in game) the game will connect to my central server download a dll and place it in a directory, that is essentially installing the new bit of software and the game will then pick up that dll and add a new button the Programs list and when the user clicks on that software in the Programs list it will launch the form in the Class Library as an MDI Child of the 'desktop

View 10 RepliesI am loading forms into a TabControl creating a new tab page each time the form is loaded. ** I would like to point out that I am using UC instead of a from**
Now, I can easily have many tabs with the same form loaded. On the form I have a 'Search Button' So my question is, after clicking the search button how can I tell which instance of the form the 'Search Button' was clicked? Hope this makes sense

In my VS2010 VB project I have a lot of external references to DLLs, to the point that organization has become a major headache and I'm wondering if I am going about it the wrong way. My assembly references include common redistributables (SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1, ReportViewer 2010 SP1, DataVisualization, as well as some useful 3rd party dlls from CodeProject and CodePlex.
Currently, I am copying each DLL into a 1st level folder (/dll_lib) under my named project folder (under the solution folder), and adding the reference from that path. However, I see that Visual Studio copies the DLLs to various other locations (/bin/debug or /bin/release) in my project when I build the project or solution, and some of the 3rd party DLLs come with instructions to copy them manually to /bin.
What is the "best practice" for where to put the DLLs? Can I just put all of them under /bin and let the build event copy to /bin/debug or /bin/release as required? Should I try to force a single reference path for the dlls in the project output?
will a VB 2010 (Windows Forms Project) run on the Windows 8 platform?

The code shown below works fine. I run it from the project SQLtesting. It loads a listbox and a checkedlistbox with the controls found on a form. I can change the value of the FormName field to any form within the SQLtesting project and get the form's controls. The forms are not actually opened/shown.I would like to be able to access forms in other projects i.e.

while running the code from the SQLtesting project.

View 13 RepliesI have a pretty large project built in vb.net under VS 2008. This project is heavy using SQL.
There is one part of the project, that I need to make a smaller project. So I am taking 6 forms out of 23 and adding them into this new project. Instead of adding the data set, I built a new one. With a different name. But it's connect to the same database.
First of all, is this a good way to make a sub-project, or is there a better way.
Secondly, I am running into a problem where my table adapters are not members of dataset. I get this error in the design code. I know it's not a good idea to manually change this code.
create a COM dll in Visual Basic. [URL]I now want to use this dll in a C++ project. I used OLE/COM Viewer to create an .idl file as is described in the second half this tutorial.[URL]I compiled the .idl with the midl compiler and included the .h file that was created in my c++ project. Here is my Visual Basic Code
<ComClass(MyComClass.ClassId, MyComClass.InterfaceId, MyComClass.EventsId)> _

I receive the following errors when I compile my c++ project

I've been assigned to start a new Logging Project from zero in VB.NET.The final exit of the main project is information organized in paragraphs like this:
[code]...
Every paragraph correspond to a database connection. Every connection is made with an entire diferent database.i need my logging project to save everything the user does, so the logging exit would be like the system exit but with exceptions and other important information like this: Paragraph's title 1 Paragraph's content 1.Paragraph's title 2 User wasn't able to see this information because an exception ocurred: System.WhateverException:couldn't connect to WCF.as you can see the exit is the same but i need to create a detail log because the information is delicate and the DBA needs to now wich user did what and what was the response of the system. Also i need it to be and independant project so i can re-use it in another projects. Seeing the final exit of both the main project and the logging project, what would you recommend me to use for logging in .NET?
i'm currently working on building a program that will take a MS Access database system produced by my company and create a VB.Net project with all the forms in it (obviously the code should be manually done, but to save time the forms and controls can be produced automatically).I have tried Googling and seem not to be able to find anything about this (which probably means I wasn't searching with the right keywords), I was wondering whether anyone knows any good resources on how to create the VB.Net project programmatically as I already know how to do all the access stuff.

An error was encountered while opening associated documents the last time this solution was loaded. Document load is being skipped during this solution load in order to avoid that error.Plus when trying to run a project in debug it takes ages to load (around 5 minutes) this has only started happening recently, projects were loading in seconds.
