View 7 RepliesI am converting an old Vb6 solution to .net 2.0 in vs2010. I've been working in C# for about 3 years now and .net for 5. I don't recall having this problem in C#, but if I want initialize a readonly collection of DerivedControlFoo Is there a clean way to do it besides creating a sub to do it all off somewhere else? I'd love to be able to do it at the class level at the declaration for readability and simplicity.

I've created a component whose name I'd like to be able to change while editing in the component tray. I've added a Designer action for a name property, but now I'm stuck.
Looking at the property grid, I can see that the name property is parenthesised, indicating that it's not a regular property.
I have created a reference to an activex com component in my project and I am wondering how I now get the program to open the active x form, I have got a GetObject function but the error is "cannot create activex component". Is there a way to call an active x .exe file so that the file opens?
View 5 RepliesMy code is calling a COM component to retrieve data from a contact management product. That code works fine when called directly from my VB code. However, if I add a Progress dialog and run the SAME code via the BackgroundWorker, the COM component does not run. It generates an error: Object does not match target type. when attempting to access items from the COM component.
Also, if I run my application via a batch file that simply calls the application, the COM component does not run. In this case, it generates an exception as soon as the COM component is accessed in the code. I have posted questions to the COM component vendor but after several days have not gotten any responses. Someone told me I could not access COM objects on a thead, but the same BackgroundWorker code works when communicating with Outlook or Lotus Notes (which I believe are both COM).

i am trying to open an external executable file during runtime using a process component and the process.start() method. I've been testing out my code with various executable files on my C: drive....some work and some do not work. I've been able to successfully open Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Excel, and Notepad; however, when I try opening various other executables the following exception gets thrown:
A first chance exception of type 'System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception' occurred in System.dll
I cannot figure out why some programs open just fine while others cause the above exception to be thrown.

View 4 RepliesIm currently developing a custom logging component, that we will deploy with all our applications, windows services, webapps, windows apps etc. I have a few questions of various nature. The component is a single signed dll file:
1) Which is the "safest" way to get the current directory? For example, in the config file, in the config section I have a property "logpath". The application will read this and write a log file depending in what they write:
c:myapplog (it will write a log here, create whatever folders it need) /Log (directly under the installed app directory, like c:program filesmyappLog) Log (same as above) I need something that work with both windows and web apps, for webapps it will log under the virtual directory of the aspnet app.
2) For exception handling, if nothing special is happening, like in the DAL, I get a sql server exception, is there any point in using

I keep getting an error stating that Excel.Application is not defined and I also get Option Strict On requires all vairable declarations to have an 'AS' clause. Can someone point me into the right direction?
I am trying to write a Windows Script that will allow me to monitor the following: That 2 x seperate but specific processes within Component Services "Running Processes" list are currently running and have not reset within the past hour. If I already know the PID, then I can retrieve the CreationDate (I assume which I can use to check for restarts? or is this the actual process creation/installation date) for each specific process, however if a restart occurs the PID will change and my script needs to know what the new PID is without me telling it!

View 4 RepliesIs there a good web browser component for VB.NET that has all the features of the regular one? This includes printing and progress bar support. I've tried WebKit.NET, but it didn't have progress bar support. I also tried xlurunner but it had no printing support. Is there another web browser component that has both printing support and progressbar support? I shouldn't have to omit features from my browser just to get a better rendering engine.

View 2 RepliesI'm making some archeology, dealing with COM+I managed to enlist a simple COM dll as a COM+ component, so far so good.So I've got this 'foobar' com+ component, with it's interface, and the method I'd like to call.My question is then rally simple: how am I supposed to make a call to this component?.NET or VB6 answer is accepted (I have to check the component is OK, don't care about the client)
Edit (06/03/09): Well, I'm confused. so as to work properly, my COM+ component needs it's dll to be registered. Why not? But then, how to be sure I'm making a COM+ call, and not a COM one?
I have a function to determine the correct time that appears to function correctly, but I must be making some mistake in the "calling" of the function. This is the first time I have tried use a component and it shows.

View 2 Repliesi have just quick question (there's not much to elaborate from OP site). Have you any links or ideas, or experiences, what is to be done to class derived from System.ComponentModel.Component, in order to show its rectangle in designed form or control. I maybe satified with just making Component shapy. Anything else should be just game. But actually I have no idea how to draw component from its basics. Any idea or link, or bunch of links very welcomed! Even my capabilities of crunching google links are nothing here.
View 7 RepliesThere's a number of postings about IMAPI in .NET, including these:

But I can't say they're straightforward. First link looks good, though its C# WinForms realization doesn't allow simple re-using in VB.NET project without conversion.I only need to burn a list of files to a CD/DVD and that's it. Any thoughts? Freeware/open-source is preferred.
I didnt know if this was the correct location to post this kind of question. My code is in C# however I am using the visualBasic. Interaction. CreateObject to connect to a OCX file. I notice that this works great for a while but if it continues to do its job for lets say a few days then I get and exception... "Can not create an ActiveX component." I am 100% sure that the ocx and dlls are registed correctly to the system.
