I'm making a speed game in VB.Net (Console Application) and users have a certain time to press a certain key. So how can I give the Console.ReadKey function a timeout without just waiting until a key was pressed?

2 timers
2 labels
1st label is "Clock" this pulls the time from the users current time zone/local time
2nd label is "UTCClock" Which would be UTC time
Now I have this for the first label: clock.Text = Format(TimeOfDay, "hh:mm:ss tt")
Which would give the users current time zone/local time. As for the UTC.. how would I add in for the UTC time from where the user is located at? I did some searches.. but couldnt find what I was looking for.. IM pretty sure its not as easy as getting the users current time zone/local time.. So im assuming that Theres a "bit more" code into getting UTC time..
I have a function that allows a user to enter numeric vallues and also a period for the decimal points but I also want to allow for users to enter the minus sign to allow users to enter negative values . How would I go about it.

I have made my program but I want to give users the option of choosing a custom color for text. I have an inputbox that works and then converts it to Color.whatever. But seeing as the user types in what they want and it is not done by the program itself it can throw exceptions.

That is my Sub, it will make Color.(userinput) but I need to check if Color.(userinput) is actually a color that VB.NET can understand and add set.
I have tried "System.Drawing.Color" I get told it is a type and cannot be used in this context.use System.ComponentModel.TypeDescriptor to convert it to a color and check if it is real and then set it.

Now that I need to publish it to other users they need to be prompted for their own usernames and passwords. I've gone to "My Project/Settings" and deleted the items from the string - but when I run I get the following message on the statement:

wondering if someone can help me some small issues I am having with building my first project.
1.I have comboboxes that allow users to enter their own choices in and then their choices are displayed into the gridview.
the problem I am having is this is allowing me to duplicate choices. for example:when I run debug to try my boxes, I can type in Johnathan into the combobox as many times as I want to and it adds is to the combobox list..so now I got 10 johnathans in my combo box.and then to make things worse, when I hit the button I made to send choices to display..it causes duplicated choices to show up in the display.What I figure is that it is easier for me to just prevent duplicates in combobox.
2.Lets say on one of 10 comboboxes I got...lets say someone skips the box and doesnt make a choice...my grid will then display the last choice made.. (man o man)for example:John chose in his boxes and is displayed on gridview: Combobox1 (john) Combo2 (5:00 PM) combo3 (waiting)now lets say I come up to the computer and in Combobox1(Dcurvez) Combo2( i skipped and didnt enter a choice) and Combobox3(In Progess)
The display will put Dcurvez....5:00 PM.....In Progress because I didnt make a choice in the time combobox..it put in the last choice (Johns) as 5:00 PM Can someone in very simple terms tell me how to fix this problem?? I am developing Client/Server application in Visual Basic 2005 with back-end SQL Server 2005 Database.I have lot a users to access to this application.I have a problem with accessing same record by two users on different machines at the same time.For example: Two user fetches the same record display on the machine.Now both have same data on the machine. The first user modified and saved the record and after some times another saved the data without modified or modifed some other columns. Now the last user who modifed the record contains the old data.

View 3 RepliesI need to write a program allowing the user to enter up to five passwords at one time. I have the textboxes set the way I need. When the user presses the button, the code should check every password they ve entered, and flag any passwords that are invalid. A valid password includes the following:
At least 6 and not more than 15 characters
At least one uppercase alpha character
At least one lowercase alpha character
At least one numeric character
I'm a little confused about how to check each character of the entered passwords for these conditions.Because it must include alpha characters, I believe I have to do something with ASC and CHAR variables. This is my first post and I need to have this done within a few hours, haha. Help would be awesome.
In the screenshot, you'll see three things- a start time, end time and total time. So the goal is this A user puts in a current start time by hitting F1 at the start of shift. They tab across the end time to the "time field", then go across the row. Then they enter their case number, then hit F1 again, and it will enter the current time in the start box on the next row, as well as putting that time in the end box in the row above.
View 9 RepliesI have written a program in VB 2010 that dumps documentation info into an Excel file. Basically, the Excel file is a log file that keeps track of revisions for design drawings at an engineering firm.
There are approximately 20 people that have access to this program. However, I've run into issues where multiple users may be using the program and trying to send info to the Excel file at the same time. The Excel file is set to read only. My program opens the file with write access, and dumps the info into the appropriate cells, then closes the file. If one person is in the process of using the program, it causes an error with another persons system if they try to use it at the same time.
In some cases, it causes my program to crash, and it leaves the Excel file open on someones system.
Typically, my program would only have the Excel file open for a couple seconds. So, the issues mentioned above are rare, but they do happen.
I'm looking for ideas to prevent this issue from occuring.
